First off, I'd like to point out that I'm a HORRIBLE poor sport.
I'm saying this because I've started to notice how unfun DDM is getting for me. In the beginning, when I first started out, it didn't matter to me if I won or lost, it was fun anyways. Now I HAVE to win to have fun.
I was talking to my dad and said I should quit the game. I'm not sure what I should do. Should I take a couple months off of playing? Should I quit? I don't know. I need ideas, solutions, and the like.
I just have the feeling it's going to get worse and I might end up doing something stupid.

I was having a similar problem a couple months ago. I was losing quite regularly and the game wasn't fun. I decided that if I wasn't going to get any better, maybe I should just quit.

I came back after a "rest" and now am feeling better about playing. One thing I did was look at the kinds of bands I was running and after consultation with Ack, I decided to bring only tournament worthy type bands to tournaments and not experiment quite so much.

I would say, take some time off and recharge the old batteries and then come back fresh.

There is some truth to this. I stopped playing in tourneys in the area as it was not fun to get into the "supra-competions". Granted this was in 40K but I think the same type of problem applies. My answer: Stop playing those people. If you are having fun playing combos that are themed or themes or with certain people that don't bring that behavior. There is a difference between playing for fun and playing for the sake of winning....[:D]

Yeah, I have to agree with Griffrat. We used to run sanctined tournies every week, and we all got REALLY competative. We started feeling that every loss was a devastating blow to our DCI rankings, and some people took it very badly. After a while we stopped doing sanctioned tournies every week and switched to scenarios that one of us would run. We still have the occasinal tournie, but our usual weekly games have become stress free and full of experimentation. Personally, i'm not a big fan of taking breaks from games/sports, but just changing the format can bring back the fun.

Sportsmanship requires effort. After all, it's easy to be gracious when you're winning. But that doesn't take to the root of the issue.

That being you needing a break. It happens to all of us from time to time. Stresses accumulate, or you're just with the "wrong crowd".

Are there some players that you enjoy playing against (win or lose) more than others? If so, talk to them and see if you can't set up a series of "for fun" games where you use goofy warbands or just use ones that aren't being tested for tournament quality. Play theme bands, no rares, no one wearing purple, that sort of thing. Do that for as long as you need to do so (until you recharge), and then ease yourself back into the tournie scene.

If there aren't people there that you can do that with, try recruiting a few friends to play a few rounds for grins and giggles.

And if you enjoy collecting, keep doing so--regardless of whether or not you play. It's what I'm doing!

There is only one 'crowd'. And yes there are people in that 'crowd' who I enjoy playing more than others, but the competative edge will probably get the better of me if it's in a tourny. I'll play almost everyone if it isn't a tourny. I have to drive the 2nd farthest distance to get to my gaming place so there is only one person that I play for fun. Otherwise if there are 4 people who show up, there's a tourny.

I am thinking that if you like playing play for just the sake of playing. Don't concentrate of winning so much. Don't play to loose but losing teaches one thing...what it feels like, or empathy.

Knowing what it feels like to be on the losing side is a good thing. Knowing how to loose gracefully is becoming a lost art. You can gain a lot from losing as it is a learning process. When you loose do you go over the game with your opponent? I know when I had time to play a lot of 40K I would play and win or loose I would talk to my opponent about the game. Things like, "One of the things I messed up on was I totally forgot to take my scorpions and flank your marines. But since you were more concerned about the dragons coming up the middle you missed the advantage." Then typically there would be something like that was a risky move bringing your libraian up the middle but it paid off as it totally held the dragons in hand to hand for two rounds. For me that was a costly mistake."

We all make mistakes, not only in games. But being able to talk about the ones we make in games will make talking about other mistakes a lot easier. I used to be super competative as well. Not that it is a bad thing just a thing. The thing that a really good freind of mine told me was. "Baker, this is a game where nothing matters. We aren't on scholarship. We aren't playing for the world championship. We are out here having fun. So relax and enjoy it for what it is, a game." Good words to live by. Games are meant to be enjoyed laughed at and fun. Fun, smiles and laughs. Things you can look back on when things are rough. You can remember hanging out wih friends and goofing off. Relax and just have fun....

Maybe that's part of the issue. Aristotle pointed out that the way to get better at the virtues is to practice them. Maybe practicing being a good sport will help you feel better.

Maybe it's not the game. Maybe it's you. What else has changed since then?

Quitting might be a bit on the harsh side, but I don't know you personally so I can't say. A break might help. What reasons are there, not related to the game itself, that you might have gone from "playing = fun" to "winning = fun"?

What kind of stupid thing do you mean?

Giving up because you don't win is being a poor sport imo. But on other hand if you're not enjoying it, why play [shrug].

I am a firm believer that the more you lose, the more you can learn about how to win.

How feasible is it for you to look for other groups or players? Post an ad or similar.

Not true. Look at this place (maxminis) there are tons of people who share similar outlooks. Saying that there is no one that thinks this way is not true. Just because you don't live close now life has a funny way of moving around. Don't give up. I am not saying that you will move but perhaps someone will move to you and this person doens't know about you because you didn't put up an ad....

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.....

An ad? You mean in the newspaper? Are you serious? Now this cound contradict all that I've whined about, but I've promised myself to never go public about me playing D&D/DDM. For me that's social suicide! I'd never get a girlfriend in this school EVER (And the probability is still low).

No, no. Not in the paper. Sorry, I would never want anyone to do that. I was thinking without typeing....my bad. I was thinking in the game stores (if there are more than one) in your area. You could also, post in the meeting places forum. You never know...

Don't worry about the girls, in high school....they really like smart guys. They don't realize it until it is too late and you are all in college and they need help with a class. For me it was in the sciences class or something (my favorite classes were cell bio and micro bio to pick up chicks [)])..... it is all good [:D]
