| | Other people have already stated how distasteful Phelps and his group are. I'm not going to search for additional words to express the same contempt for them. I'll just say that I agree with much of the disgust people have expressed. I look forward to the day that he experiences his comeuppance (however that is spelled)--unless he truly and completely recognizes how dispicable his actions have been and does everything in his power to make restitition. If that ever happened, my opinion of him would start shifting back towards neutral. | | "Look to God and live." Alma 37:47 Vindicated Champ of Hippogriff (Arcadian Hippogriff) and Uncommon Horse | |

| quote: Ya know before this story Fred was just kinda the local oddity/idiot. Widely ignored as the group is really small and the trash that coomes out of his sewer for a mouth is just trying to get an emotional rise out of people.
He has been doing this and similar for a long time. Infamous for it. Of course when he was _only_ hating gays there was less outcry.

Not only should people protest him when he's spreading his hate filled message, they should protest him from the moment he leaves his house to the moment he crawls back to it. He should, & I bet you would see him whimper for his rights to be left alone awful fast then.

Then he will most likely become a martyr/saint for his church, the servicemen/women responsible demonised.
Some sorts of filth should just be ignored as much as possible.
Phelps defines pondscum. He makes me very angry and quite irate. I`m not up on the free speech laws of the US but it does seem it skirts them very well, as sadly must be tolerated.
But in 100 years he may well be regarded as the exemplar of 'his' christain views and a new sect founded.
Sometimes I almost wished I did believe in a vengful god to punish him in the afterlife.

| | I would compare the right to free speech with the right to bear arms. I carry a weapons at all times as it is my right, however, I do not have the right to indesriminately open fire on people I do not like. The same rules should apply to peoples mouths. | | Evil triumphs when good men fail their morale saves. | |

That's the reason that I hate people nowadays. That's fine, you've got the right to protest and everything, but these soldiers fought and died FOR YOU. They paid the ultimate sacrifice for their cause, and I back them 100%. We've lost thousands of good men and women to gain and keep our freedoms, and to keep those of others from being distroyed. Asses like this guy need to be taught a lesson, and I've got the perfect solution. Give them to the families of the departed soldiers, like me, who lost two cousins in Iraq. They'll learn to respect REAL fast. There is a BIG difference between the right of free speech, and complete mockery of what this country and it's people stand for. If it weren't for these soldiers, these people would be blown up for their beliefs. Sometimes, it's too bad we can't do that here.
Yeah it's because we have a government. The voice of God is Government. Free Speech bah! Big Bro is here and not a damn thing we can do about it. As for your loss I feel for you. War sucks, undeclared war is worse.
My feeling is this Jr. is just finishing up Daddy's work and we as a country are getting deeper and deeper into it. Nobody should die. If George Sr took care of business the first time, we wouldn't be where are today. As a parent, I hope that my son does not go off somewhere to fight for a cause that is the agenda of another.
My 2 cents.
Oops sorry I forgot about the Jacka$$. Sure he may using his duma$$ right to free speech but c'mon its a funeral for crying out loud. Apparantly respect isn't a word that he knows or his family. Curse words that follow are censored. | | Gehenna | |

Sulaco, you use this term 'we' too freely, We don't have to put up with it...Unfortunately Americans do.
One thing I love about 'Our Home and Native Land' is that while we have free speech we also have the Canadian Criminal Code against Hate Speech or mongering.

Someone like Phelps could be charged in Canada for the promotion of hatred against homosexuality or at least be forced to dispurse and leave funerals alone.

| | I'm sure Sulaco was refering to The United States whe he was saying we. Other countries are obviously going to have different laws about speech and assembly. No offence is intended I'm sure. But OUR courts have ruled repeatedly that an individual has the right to express his opinions publicly no matter how hateful they are. As long as such a display does not rise to the level of inducing a riot or disruption of other services he is protected. IMO this is an abuse of the freedom the Constitution gurantees but it is an unfortunate price to pay to ensure that all Americans have the right to free speech and assembly. Again IMO trying to legislate what speech is allowed in public based on what the government thinks is acceptible is a very slippery slope. It set prescident for banning other types of speech. The media has unfortunatly played right into his hands by giving him attention and as was stated before he does this specifically for finacial gain he is just begging for someone to infringe on his rights so he can sue. IMO this jerk is not a preacher just an opportunist useing religion as a cover. | | Asystole is a stable heart rhythm | |

| As much as I abhor the man and every single thing he stands for, if we silence him, another will take his place, who then needs to be silenced and on and on. Eventually, someone will take offense to another protester and that one will have to be shut up as well. Where would it stop?

If we silence Phelps, we take one very large step towards becoming him. After all, he would (given the power/authority) gladly silence every voice which opposes him.
In any case, nothing any of us could do to Phelps compares to the fact that he can look foward to a very long eternity in hell after he finally dies. | | "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people."
