This is news straight from www.starwars.com so its legit.
quote:
"In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie, as well as the original theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983."

These DVDs will come out in September by the way.
I will continue to watch the remasted 2004 versions myself..Young Anakin's Ghost aside I still think they are the best versions.
I know alot of purists will be happy with this news however..Though I cant see Episode 4 without Jabba anymore :)
Choosing to see the old version is a nice feature though..Its nice to have for posterity's sake. Looks like Lucasfilm conned me into buying Star Wars AGAIN!
I own the trilogy on VHS, the THX remasterd VHS, the Special Edition on VHS, the DVD box set, and now these.

I almost broke down and bought the 'new' ones, but I'll save my coppers to throw at the originals!

Very happy!

My only problem with the special editions was the computer aninmation for the revised content. I understand that it was the content we were meant to see from the get go. However, it is highly out of place when you see the modern effect next to the old ones (btw the old effects were better). They should have doubled their efforts to create the revised content using the old models and puppets.

This will be cool. I heard that if you look hard enough you can sometimes see the materials that the models are moving on in the first edition of the star wars I.

Thanks, realmaster. Let's split up!!!!!

Hmmm...I'm torn. I'm happy that a DTS/Dolby 5.1 version is coming out, but at the same time my laser discs just became that much less useful....

I wish they weren't being released with the re-edits. That needlessly drives up the price (since the people buying these likely already own the 2004 re-edits).

Argggg, You mean like the part where Greedo shots first!?

I finally broke down and bought the DVD's late last year.
I did like the parts that were meant to be in the film aka the Director's Cuts (Extra Biggs scenes and the addition of Jabba), but those 'change of heart' edits like greedo shooting were just aweful.

Well in the special edition Greedo Shoots first...Han doesnt flinch...and he shoots back....Terrible.

The 2004 DVD version they kind of shoot at each other at the same time...Much better...Han shooting and Greedo not is best but the DVD "Simultanius shootin" is miles better than Greedo shooting first.

So that alone makes the DVD versions better than the special editions...And Mos Eisley looking like one strip of road and the Wampa never being seen and Cloud City never really looking like a city are major improvements that just look bad now when you go back to the original.

Finally... Geesh, I haven't seen the trilogy in years because of the new stuff that was added. I think the last time I saw them, was when FOX or which ever channel it was, started showing them right before Episode one hit the theaters. Talk about dissapointment. I dunno, if they did it using the old stop motion and muppets, I probably would have been ok with it.

Ressurecting the thrdead for a rant....

What a load of bantha poodoo [V][V][V]

These aren't cleaned up, enhanced DVDs of the original. They're craptastic transfers of the 1997 laserdisc (complete with outstandingly out-of-date Dolby 2.1 surround). No cleanup, no anamorphic widescreen, no DTS, no 5.1 surround. Coupled with the fact that you're forced to buy the third release of the special edition DVDs....

I suppose I can be grateful, since I can save a pile of money ($100 MSRP for all three films). I already have the laserdiscs.

All I can say to this is: wrackspawn!

Of course you all realize that he's just rushing these out before the whole HD-DVD/Bluray thing takes off, and he's going to sell us Yet Another Version sometime down the road.

The proof's in the documentary on the Episode III disc: a digital Yoda in the council scenes from Episode I. He's not done messing with these films by a long shot.

Yup. When I heard that the originals were coming out, I was happy. Then I realized that you'd have to buy the Special Editions as well.

I already own those, so I'm not keen on spending that kind of cash for a whole set of discs that I already own. And I figured they'd just dump them on dvd. Lucas is irritated that fans wanted those old versions--he denied that they even existed for quite some time.

If he'd given them a decent transfer (once through the machine to clean up the footage a bit) and put them out, I would have loved it. But I'm not going to get triple dipped on this one. Not yet anyway.

You are right.
Make no mistake people. These are not just going to be cleaned up original theatrical versions on DVD. These will be the DVD Special Editions. The difference will be that if you go to the "Bonus Material" section you can select seeing the original theatrical version. And this bonus is simply a transfer from the old laserdisc.

George didnt want to ever release the original versions ever again at all..But fan demand just wouldnt stop hounding him.
We are lucky to be getting this. It was more than what we were told we would get (never releasing the old version again).
Why would Lucasfilms spend the milions needed to clean up the original version when George doesnt want to do even this?

Im totally fine with the way its being done.
Like I said the DVD sepecial editions are superior anyway. Seriosly, despite Greedo pulling the trigger and that horrible new music number in Jabba's palace...The good improvements truly outweigh the bad by a mile.
So I will still watch the Special Editions anyway...The theatrical versions ae a nice bonus to be watched as often as the "deleted scenes" bonus on other DVDs. I will throw it in and fast foward to scenes that were changed so I can go back and see how lame Mos Eisly looked or see the wierd Old-Lady looking Emperor in Empire Strikes Back..but thats about it.

And and if your curious Im 31 years old and saw SW in the Theatre when I was 2. So Im not a young punk who doesnt understand nostalgia.

I, for one, am ready for a nerdy abbot and costello skit about "Which version of star wars are you watching?"

"Why I'm watching star wars 4"
"The fourth release of the first movie?"
"Why no, the first release of the fourth movie"
"etc etc etc"

I hope by original they mean truly original, as in the first one is titled "Star Wars," not "A New Hope."

When was it changed to "Episode 4 - A New Hope"?
Wasnt it changed when it was re-released in 1979...even before Empire Strikes Back came out in theatres?
If it does just say "Star Wars" that would be cool :)

Since its just the Laserdisc version transfered onto a DVD someone can probably look it up right now if they have Laserdisc.

The laser disc runs:

STAR WARS

Episode IV-A New Hope

If the New Hope subtitle was added in '78, I'm not surprised it's on the 1997 laser discs.
The picture is fuzzy and the sound is tinny. Granted, the laser disc starts with the best THX logo sequence ever (I've only seen it on the laser discs) of Luke blowing up the Death Star/THX logo.

Good. It's not nearly enough to make me care about Star Wars again - my fandom died a horrid, painful death the day I saw Phantom Menace the first time - but at least it is something for those of us who were fans of Star Wars when it was a single movie, not a franchise.

Good for "fan demand" and shame on George. The historian in me cringes that he wants to erase those old versions of a very important cultural phenomenon. I would very much like those old versions (or each "major" version of the film--if a half second of a bantha depositing scat is cut in one version, I'm not so concerned, but when title cards are changed, etc. is another matter) retained both as historical example and as living record.

And I doubt it would take too much to clean up the film a bit. Most of it was already done for the Special Editions. All that would need to be done is fix the old film for the changes that were made. Even then, I'd settle with a noticable drop in quality so long as it was better than the originals.

Still, I hope plenty of people buy it. I just can't get the scratch together.

Greedo shooting first sucks.
Lame song in Jabba's palace or "Yub-yub"? Little does it matter. Suck they both do.

Other than those two issues, I generally like the Special Editions.

Oh, and one more thing. Lucas ain't done yet. According to everything I've ever heard; there will be an "archive" edition of the films to be released at an as yet undetermined date. So we could be looking forward to still more changes to all six films.
