The girls are gone for the morning, so I got to break out the mp3s and crank the stereo (yes I'm geek - one of my computers is our sound system).
I setup a playlist of nothing but old 80s tunes and shuffled it:

| Hehe, it seems we almost share the same taste of music back in the 80's. Mostly "new wave." Although I'd probably add some music from the following groups too:

U2 (Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride)
What killed "new wave" and 80's pop? I'd have to say a decline in air time. Mainstream Rock and Rap music was on the rise and dominated the charts. "New Wave" suddenly was a joke and became a guilty pleasure. Sigh.

"New Wave" was the polite term for "punk." It never really died. It sort of evolved in a variety of directions. Part of punk turned into hip-hop/rap (reflecting the reggae/mix origins). It all really began with glamour rock (Toy Dolls) which split into punk and hair bands.
Granted, this is all subjective since the lines between musical genres in the late 60s/early 70s were seriously blurred (as class/gender/race lines concurrently began to blur).
The reason I prefer the 80s variety of punk/new wave to the more current stuff is that most of the time it's actually somewhat decent music. Very little contemporary "pop" is even related to music. Pity, that.

| It's strange. Last night a commercial for this collection of 80's music was on TV, and all it did was remind me what a dark time for humanity the 80's were.
There was some good music out of the 80's (some of which were named) but in general, it's my least favorite decade in terms of music. And fashion.
Then again, the vast majority of mainstream modern music is rubbish too, IMO.

I have a different set of tunes that I listened to in the 80s--no surprise, I do everything a little skewed from normal.

| Eighties night at the night club back when I was in college
was always fun. I do have thousands of songs on the computer
from ripping all of my old CD's...makes much easier for
playlist.
I am trying to think if I had a fav 80's band/singer, but
one I heard on the way home from work the other day was
Michael Penn / No Myth...really got nostalgic, remembering
the times driving in the old car listening to Night Ranger & "Cough..." REO Speedwagon with the guys and girlfriends.
And I'm not even that old.

| I can't understand why people loved the 80's so much. I grew up in the eighties and hated it. Neon colors and pastels everywhere, those stupid shirts that changed color with sunlight, bubble letters, Michael Jackson, Reaganomics, etc. It was just a terrible decade whose best parts were its most outlandish and ridiculous.
As for music, I think the emergence of MTV and the evolution of a number of different styles within pop made it probably the most diverse and creative period in pop music history. That said, even the most innovative of pop music still sucks. [)] To this day I can't fathom how Michael Jackson was ever so popular. | |

Jazz and Hip-Hop aren't a very good example of unrelated genres. They share a number of characteristics, both being born out of older African-American musical traditions, having a high degree of improvisation (at least initially), etc.
However, I can agree with the sentiment that there's a notable difference between punk and New Wave. Very early on the terms were used interchangeably, but by the time MTV shows up in 1981 they're pretty much separate genres. They share rejection of the dominant 70s pop style, but bands like the Talking Heads (which I would consider a New Wave band) and bands like the Ramones (which I would consider a punk band) don't have a lot in common musically, despite both being part of the "punk scene".
They're definitely related, but different, especially once you get into the 80s. | |

I actually saw the Violent Femmes in concert last week. I was expecting it to be just a nostalgia show, but they were damn good. Strange to hear middle-age Gordon Gano belting "Why can't I get just one ****", though.
