Short version ... MaxMinis needs a forum upgrade ... Forum upgrade requires DB upgrade ... owner in absentia makes DB / hosting upgrade difficult.
Several of us have been corresponding w/ the owner/webmaster for MONTHS about the general state of the site and its need for active ownership. As it is, he's been pretty receptive but things are not moving with the alacrity we (the community) would hope to see.
Beyond the steps Merric has already taken, there's nothing we can do with the current framework provided. Personally, I'd like a better registration system (w/ the image-imbedded anti-spam codes or similar) as part of a complete forum overhaul. | |

Donations at this point would do no good. We need active ownership. There are several different paths that have been offered in the communication between webmaster/jai/myself, but we need him to make a decision so we can proceed.
FWIW, this conversation was started by Jai in 2005 when the first rumblings of real forum-upgrade were starting... so keep that time-frame in mind. | |

Now, while I've received a few messages in the last couple days, it's nothing burdensome. My old hotmail account gets 20 spams a day. | |

An IP or user ban won't fix it because people can change both of those things. User activation just requires a small delay, and won't defeat organized spammers. Requiring a password for site access is probably an undue hardship and will hurt legitimate newbs from visiting the site. | |
