Does anyone else have people that just stop by and want to let you know how they would do an aspect of your job? Or just want to chat when you are in the middle of something requiring thought?

I have a couple people that tend to stop by and want to chat. Normally, I am all down for the chat in the workday. But there are a couple that have the uncanny ability to discern when I am in the middle of a process that is taking so of my mental resources. Makes matters worse when they want an answer and feel slighted when they do not get the response in a timely manner. I typically ask them to leave as polite as I can.....so I can meet my deadline/data report/task whatever...

The one that gets me kinda fired up is the one guy that is the self-proclaimed expert. This guy has no formal training yet if he did he would be running the worlld wide company that he works for. Thankfully, I don't work for that comapny......but I can tell that he has no earthly idea what he is talking about. But he is wanting me to do things his way when I know better. This guy always comes around when work is slow for me and I am trying to catch up on important things like what Wake is getting blamed for..[)] Someitmes I bait him around with things that I know are wrong to see if he is catching on to what he is saying....but times like today.... [:(!]

All in all I just want to stand-up and get in to the mode Mrs. griffrat calls "getting all military" ( think R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket), and in a military way ask them, "TO GET OUT OF MY OFFICE...."[:(!]

Anyone else have these folks at there office/workplace? I can't be alone as Kansas can't be the last refuge for these people..... please share....[:D]

These people are part of the business ecosystem. They try to get you so mad you do something you regret. Then you get fired and they take your job. Thats why I am polite to them while I am at work.
Now I live on a farm where I am a metal worker, so I get a lot of criticism from people who think they can do things better. Just tell them this is the way you do it. When they do it they can do it however they want. If they give me any more lip I just whack em with my hot tongs.

I always have some idiot at my work who comes by to talk to me or my partner. If it's my partner then my partner doesn't do anything else, if it's me it's stupid questions or my favorite "your too slow at doing your job" type of thing.
I wash dishes at a restaurant so if he really starts to bother me I'm comforted to know I will always have a nice sharp steak knife handy. It's no pair of hot tongs, but it'll do just fine.

Dude, thats like telling a soldier he's a wuss for taking a rifle to battle. If that guy does'nt think that you have to take proper precautions then he's really not much of an expert. Just ignore him.

Normally no, but then again, I'm in a secure area with a badge reader. However, I'm very familiar with those types of people.

Is it possible to be a paid "armchair commando"? I'd like to get paid to tell special forces how to be more effective.

Griffrat- do work with me? [:p] My mid-western boss thinks he knows more than me, and I have 8 years experience more than him. I've received a certification that he hasn't (although I let it lapse- stupid continuing education!) and I make less mistakes than him. I can't picture how an uncharismatic jerk like him ever got promoted. Oh well.

Well I can explain that one based upon my employment history. Those that are the best at their jobs don't get promoted and the ones that kiss ass and suck at their jobs do. Simple math, you keep the good people doing what they are good at to keep the company going. Otherwise you wouldn't produce anything.

I saw more people working their asses off at my last job while the "Senior Managment" would just take all the credit and screw over the people doing the good job. If it was reversed nothing would get done because management didn't have the first clue how to do what the people under them did.

I'm a firm believer that you shouldn't be in management over something unless you have done the jobs of the people under you. If you can't do those positions as well as they can, you shouldn't be supervising them.

Hmmm... well there are times I'm in the Captains Quarters(office) doing paperwork or computer work. Often times the other members of the managment staff have a tendancy to congregate there and chat. Here's a few methods I've used over the years to get them to leave asap.

1) Gas - it's a classic, even if you don't rip one loose in the office you can always inform people that you just passed some wind. That tends to get them disinterested in sticking around.

2) Threats of Cannibalism - This is my classic method, it can be as simple as threating to chew their face off or something more elaborate.

Pest - Blah blah blah blah!
Me - Here, have a cookie.
Pest - Thanks
Me - No problem, you should be ready for the pot in another week or so.

3) Thrown Objects - Rubberbands are nice, as are small pieces of rolled up paper or even pens/pencils. I never aim for the person themself, just close enough to scare them.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

I know the feeling, griff. My officemate (note that I don't use the term "co[i]work[/]er") is one of those that manages to spend 1/2-3/4 of her day chit-chatting. Sometimes folks come in to visit her, sometimes she's gone for 1/2 hour chatting with someone else.

Of course, things aren't terribly hectic right now, so I'm not exactly what you'd call "busy" either. However, when things pick up...

Last year, after I took a week of vacation, I was in the office early and late (for about 10 hours of OT) to catch us up on the work she didn't do. What a way to come back to work.

My two options:

1) Pretend that they aren't there just continue to do your work...Who care's if they 'feel' slighted? Let them go cry to their mommies!

2) Make fun of something they're sensitive to, such as their hair, nose or some thing they like (like a really bad movie they enjoyed). Hey so long you aren't talking in a sexual way you have nothing to fear...other then a pretty lame 'come-back'.

I know that we are both in the K.C. area but I don't work with any Jermeys....to bad though. Another person with a sense of humor in the office would be nice!!

sage_ras. It is very true but the right now there is a pretty big upheavel goin on in the mid management ranks for those people. The "experts" company is doing a walk through today. Of course that this means that I didn't shave and I am wearing jeans and a white shirt (nice white t-shirt but a t-shirt nonetheless [)]). Not my company.....but the mid management is crappying themselves.

Bigbadjon, this is where your "armchair commando" aspect comes in the base commanders are going through the inspection but yet the combat ready troops are kicking back because they know they are "squared away" and good to go!!

Ghendar, our badge readers just limit the number of idiots. The other buildings allow us we don't allow them. But then we are on the back of the farm and our building has the "smell of death" about it anyways. The smell helps deter most.... [}:)]

Vash, real men drink poison.....real dead ones!! [:D]

CoCB, When I went on Spring Break this semester the dose formulations area was left to the "expert" I speak of and was a total shambles upon my return I cleaned it. His management thanked me for the "effort". But the kicker is that my company instituted a new vacation policy. This vacation policy is that I have to burn around 100 hours or I lose them (this is close to the amount of what I rolled over from last year). So, I am leaving at the end of this month and people are crapping themselves. They have asked if I would come in and just work for a couple hours. But I totld them I won't be able to. Which I am just laughing about. I am feeling a little bad as the only good manager in the "expert's" company is going to have to do my job as the formulation chemist for some studies. Oh well.....not my fault.

You got that right.

You do not understand, I'll take the week of hell instead of the month of hell...why you ask? (and this can only be answered by people who have witnessed and experience what I have) because it is in women's nature to fight and be territorial, it is the animal instinct in them when in a large herd with just a couple of males.

They fight for attention (from the males) constantly and the ones that are not "moody" hate the ones that are and then the cycle repeats...every week...every day. It is amazing how nature synchronizes things...we are nothing but mammals. Sometimes I think I am being involuntarily exposed to a sociological experiment, either that or an alien version of Animal Planet.

I used to have it even worse... the idiot that came around asking stupid questions and generally getting in the way was my boss. Much better at brown nosing than at actually doing any kind of work. Talk about office politics. Middle managment in a call center is one of the worst places. (No I did not do telemarketing, we were an inbound customer service call center.[}:)])

I know all about working in an office full of women. It ain't fun-n-games, I'll tell you that.

At our branch, we have probably 10 guys (I get along with 2 of them) and probably close to 30 women (it used to be closer to 40). I know that not all women are like the ones that I work with, but I can't help think about Ben Kenobi's admonishment to Luke Skywalker about Mos Eisley. The politicking going on is disgusting.

I miss the days of working in the grocery store, or at least in a more evenly divided work force.

::grins:: I don't have to put up with those annoying types while on the firing range, however...

We do have our fair share of chairborne rangers! The most annoying type is the guy that writes policy without discussing it with anyone because it looks good on paper. Policy is implemented and it sucks. And he wonders why theory and practicality don't go hand in hand without compromise.

Griff, we'll be driving through KC in early July on vacation. Its a pity you won't working there anymore, I have a knack for insulting people! [}:)]

How do u sit at a kiosk? Isn't that like sitting in front of an arcade system?

Hmmm... well there are times I'm in the Captains Quarters(office) doing paperwork or computer work.

Wow.... I was really stressed out a few years ago. [:o]

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

That does not sound fun.  It's fine while you're still young, but that's not one for the middle-aged man.
