Spooky. I suppose we could p[ant those south american corpse flowers everywhere. Flies are pretty hardy, but then then world would smell like an open grave.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

The end is here!!!

And it has no Honey!!

Really, that's kind of wierd, to think of exactly how much we rely on other parts of the ecosystem so much.

My wife cannot digest regular sugar, is allergic to corn (no corn syrup or fructose) and gets migranes from all the fake sweetners. She's on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and so the only sweetner her body digests properly is honey. I buy it by the gallon from a local Amish guy, but, I really hope this doesn't drive my price up. It's expensive enough as is.

Hey there's a Forgotten Realms novel with that very premise!

We've been noticing a distinct reduction of bees around here. Lots of Yellow Jackets, no Bumblebees. There has also been a distinct increase in new construction.

Eating local honey (collected within around 50 miles of your home) actually helps reduce allergies (acts like an inoculation).

A bit of text from Raland's link:

Are mobile phones wiping out our bees?
Scientists claim radiation from handsets are to blame for mysterious 'colony collapse' of bees
By Geoffrey Lean and Harriet Shawcross
Published: 15 April 2007

It seems like the plot of a particularly far-fetched horror film. But some scientists suggest that our love of the mobile phone could cause massive food shortages, as the world's harvests fail.

They are putting forward the theory that radiation given off by mobile phones and other hi-tech gadgets is a possible answer to one of the more bizarre mysteries ever to happen in the natural world - the abrupt disappearance of the bees that pollinate crops. Late last week, some bee-keepers claimed that the phenomenon - which started in the US, then spread to continental Europe - was beginning to hit Britain as well.

The theory is that radiation from mobile phones interferes with bees' navigation systems, preventing the famously homeloving species from finding their way back to their hives. Improbable as it may seem, there is now evidence to back this up.

Am I the only one who's suspicious that every single time anything unexplained happens, cell phones are blamed?

There's actually another theory suggesting it's an exotic kind of mold that got into the US. So far, the exotic mold has been detected in many of the abandoned hives. I'll see if I can dig up the article....

also, from wikipedia:
he Independent newspaper cited a scientific study claiming it provided evidence for the theory that mobile phone masts are a major cause in the collapse of bee populations, with controlled experiments demonstrating a rapid and catastrophic effect on individual hives near masts.⎣] Mobile phones were in fact not covered in the study, and the original researchers have since emphatically disavowed any connection between their research, cell phones, and CCD, specifically indicating that the Independent article had misinterpreted their results and created "a horror story".

But the results are "highly preliminary" and are from only a few hives from Le Grand in Merced County, UCSF biochemist Joe DeRisi said. "We don't want to give anybody the impression that this thing has been solved."

Other researchers said Wednesday that they too had found the fungus, a single-celled parasite called Nosema ceranae, in affected hives from around the country — as well as in some hives where bees had survived. Those researchers have also found two other fungi and half a dozen viruses in the dead bees.

N. ceranae is "one of many pathogens" in the bees, said entomologist Diana Cox-Foster of Pennsylvania State University. "By itself, it is probably not the culprit … but it may be one of the key players."

Yeah, it's probably not the cell phones. Later in that story they "quote" the Einstein thing. You can tell when someone is misinformed, quotes from Einstein, that Einstein never made, start showing up.

Not a real quote eh?  I kind of liked it, maybe will remove it from my sig.

"Colony Collapse Disorder has been seen before, but under different names. In 1915 it was called Disappearing Disease, and in the 1960s it was Dwindling Disease. Both outbreaks were localized, never widespread, and the causes were never determined.

While beekeepers consider a 20% loss to be normal for a season, losses of 30-60% have been reported this season, and the problem continues to spread. CCD is also being reported throughout parts of Canada and Europe."

I'm sorry to hear that your wife can't easily enjoy some of the simple pleasure in life - most sweets.

On a lighter note, by supporting them with your business, that makes you a part of Team Amish (see nasty Hordelings thread).
