But WAIT! Some have now suggested that the mention of "poetry" along with googe is a reference to Barnabe Googe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnabe_Googe)
Googe is well-known in Australia for one line of poetry, I did but see her passing by, and yet I love her till I die. This quote was used in a speech by Prime Minister Robert Menzies on a tour of Queen Elizabeth II in 1963. Whilst Menzies remained an ardent admirer of royalty, the country had become less so, and the reaction to its use is often cited by Australian republicans as marking the decline of Australian affections for the monarchy.
Was the google doodle calling to mind an obscure poet who (unsurprisingly if you've ever spent time reading poetry) wrote on the subject of love (making it v-day appropriate)?

| More feedback from a friend of mine on another website:
I don't buy it. Google uses a serif font in it's logos. A lowercase "g" in a serif font has the "tail" on the upper side of it, just like their strawberry stem. Suggesting that it was intentionally done that way with the stem implying the "l"... I just don't buy it. Perhaps if they had a history of using sans-serif fonts, but that's not the case.
This man knows his fonts! I'm sort of feeling his point and thinking this could just be a clever google cover up | |
