| My brother just got me started with EVE Online, and I have to say, it's really cool. I have, in fact, upgraded to a paying membership. Seeing as how there's a significant social aspect to the game, I thought I'd see if I already interacted with other EVE players through other forums--a bit easier to find trustworthy folks to partner up with.
So, if you play EVE, especially if you have an active membership, sound out, if you don't mind. I'm not looking for hand-outs, just other people besides my brother to chat with, ask advice, and team up on stuff. Pirate hunting, complexes and mining are a bit easier to do safely and efficiently as a team. Eventually, I'll even want to branch out into player-vs.-player pirate hunting. My brother and I haven't started a corporation, yet, but that's definitely on our agenda of things to do.
My online character is Sumerio Rayej, a Gallente - Intaki Reborn Engineer. My brother's current character is Gallandir--a Caldari. My home region is Verge Vendor, and that's where I spend most of my time. My brother's home region is Lonetrek, but he's started splitting his time among his region and mine. I currently fly a pair of Catalysts (Gallente destroyers - one outfitted as an anti-frigate gunship, the other as a mining vessel), a Daredevil (Serpentis faction frigate - useful for "'roid rat" hunting and level I complexes, where my catalyst can't go), and an Iteron I for hauling cargo and picking up ore after my mining ship has collected it.
My brother definitely has me beat, since he mines with an Osprey (Caldari mining cruiser) and hauls with a Badger Mark II. Also, I think he just bought a Drake (Caldari Battle Cruiser) for combat, though I've convinced him to keep a Catalyst around for NPC pirate hunting. | | "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish." - Albert Einstein Champion of Myopic Half-Orcs Winner, WBC X

It's a sci-fi MMORPG. Depending on your personality, you might find it extremely fun. I do. One thing that WoW players might find strange is that skill development is time-based (real time), not objective-based. You can acquire resources by conducting missions, and you can acquire things to speed your skill progression, but you can only boost skills by devoting time to skill training. On the plus side, once you set a skill to training, you continue training that skill even if you're not online. | | "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish." - Albert Einstein Champion of Myopic Half-Orcs Winner, WBC X

| | I had never heard of the game until reading this thread, so I googled it and found the website. It looks pretty neat. I think I'll give it a shot. | | Champion of the Revenant Knight of the Elf Duskblade Complete Trades: Oni, Kidkach, Melrune, callidusx3 | |

Supposedly, that is an upgrade they are currently working on, though it'll probably be a couple years before you see that.

Yeah, I imagine that is a potential drawback, eventually. Maybe he never really got into the player vs. player aspect of the game. That seems to have good potential for keeping the game fresh. You can start your own corporations, form alliances, establish control of lawless territory, declare wars, etc. I hope to eventually get into that. | | "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish." - Albert Einstein Champion of Myopic Half-Orcs Winner, WBC X

THAT is the part I am intrigued by. I remember when I played Star Wars Galaxies, the missions (at least the earlier ones) quickly got monotonous and boring. It wasn't until I started going on patrols with groups of Rebels I had befriended and battling Imperial players that the game got interesting.
There is a lot of stuff to read up on for Eve Online about factions and politics before I decide what organization to join, but I'm thinking I might want to either be a pirate or a pirate hunter.

| | Sounds interesting, but it also sounds like it's pay for play, which is a deal breaker for me. I don't care how awesome something is, or how many times a day they add new content, I just can't see paying for a video game and then having to pay more to be able to play it. | | Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say "Ni" at will to old ladies. -Roger the Shrubber | |

True. It is a pay-for-play MMORPG with a monthly subscription. That always turned me off from WoW, and it made me hesitant to try any such game. I'm really seriously thinking about accepting the subscription on this one, though. | | "Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish." - Albert Einstein Champion of Myopic Half-Orcs Winner, WBC X

| | It was really hyped up at GenCon last year in the dealer's room. It had dropped off my radar since then, so it's good to see it's still around. Since I'm already into one pay for play, although I don't pay that much because I got into beta, probably not going to start another. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | I'm not really a sci-fi fan and doubt I ever will be unless I get my own, personal computer and play something like Starcraft 2 (before it's announcement, I've never heard about it) to get a feel for what I could like about it as long as I can make enough general and (a few) specific translations from fantasy to their equivalents in sci-fi. And then, maybe I'll see how EVE is. Doubt it, though. | | Champion of the Prismatic Golem

| | If you don't like sci-fi, you may want to try out Shadowrun (roleplaying or the new computer game that is getting rave reviews). Since it's a mix of the two genres, it may be a good transition and a gateway into sci-fi from fantasy. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| | Starcraft 2 should be a great game even if you're not all that into sci-fi. I haven't been excited about an RTS in a quite a while, but Starcraft 2 just looks awesome. | | Champion of the Revenant Knight of the Elf Duskblade Complete Trades: Oni, Kidkach, Melrune, callidusx3 | |
