I know I've seen some fantasy/RPG movies I'd recommend - anyone else? I know we've all seen some stinkers too...let's try to stay away from them...

Dragonslayer
Lord of the Rings - all 3 of Peter Jackson's version
Excalibur
13th Warrior
Krull
Conan the Barbarian
Conan the Destroyer
Braveheart
Rob Roy
Lord of the Rings - animated
Return of the King - animated
The Hobbit - animated

Can't remember any others right now...

Shottglazz

I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

Legend
Willow
Ladyhawke

Those come to mind.

Hmmm... what's a stinker? I would have put Krull in that category.

Edit:

The 2 D&D movies
Time Bandits
Jason and tha Argonauts
7th Voyage of Sinbad
Clash of the Titans
The Never Ending Story
The Last Unicorn
Harry Potter franchise
Fire and Ice
Red Sonja
The Dark Crystal
The Beastmaster
Hawk the Slayer

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

Edit:  The 2 D&D movies as well.
Stinker doesn't really begin to describe....

Other stinkers:
Eragon (can't wait for the steaming pile of sequel)

Recommendations:
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
The Beastmaster
The Black Cauldron
The Chronicles of Narnia (BBC version)
The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (Andrew Adamson version)
House of Flying Daggers
Hero
The Goonies (it's a dungeon crawl )
The Dark Crystal
The Last Starfighter (more sci-fi than fantasy, but still...)

The second D&D movie wasn't awful. It was a made for cable movie, and it showed. It would have been much better if had a bigger budget. As for the first one... well, beholders are cool. Beholders fooled by thrown rocks are not.

First Knight
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Gladiator
Alexander
300
Troy
King Arthur
Eric the Viking

Alexander as a keeper? I'd put it as a stinker, just because of some of the worst directing of all time. Plus, I saw way too much of the King of Macedonia.

The second D&D movie wasn't awful.
But it was sure close

The acting was bad, the druid's death was incomprehensible (except as plot device), and the lich was funny rather than scary. If the entire movie had managed to be a good as the opening intro sequence it would have actually been quite good. Alas.

Read the book. It was, um, pretty much a steamer as well. Not bad for a post-colonialist teenage writer, but, simultaneously, obviously produced by a post-colonialist teenage writer.

Two more classics:

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure AND Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (technically they're fantasy )

If we broaden our definition of fantasy, Time Bandits, Brazil, and Baron von Munchausen are really good.

Those don't require broadening the definition of fantasy (fantastic elements (magic or the supernatural) within a self-coherent setting).

Interestingly enough, most science-fiction is actually of the fantasy genre. Perfect examples of this include Star Wars (the Force) and Star Trek (tachyon emissions (theoretical), worm holes (theoretical), warp engines (not possible with current understanding of universal physics), etc).

I liked Eragon as a book, athough not so much as HP, for example. It was good, but not great.

I'd say those are the difference between hard and soft science fiction, not fantasy, but that's quibbling.

If you really want a movie that's not typical fantasy, Field of Dreams (Magical realism)

There was the film, Dragonheart IIRC.

A skilled dragonslayer meets a dragon, he befriends him, then they find outt the dragon gave half of his heart to a dying prince, who is now terrorizing the land. The Dragon's name was Draco.

Voiced by Sean Connery IIRC.

Speaking of which, I can't believe no one has mentioned Highlander yet. Not the sequels, though. They tell me there was a second movie, but I don't believe it's true. Much like a 5th Star Trek movie and prequels for Star Wars. Not sure why they think they were made. They must be deluded.

I don't count Highlander as fantasy. I count it as grindhouse/cult classic (complete with Queen soundtrack)

Only see it subtitled. The dubbing is horrendous. Granted, that can be applied as a rule to 99% of all foreign language films (regardless of what your native language is).

The City of Lost Children = agreed. Ron Perlman at his finest.
What Dreams May Come? Not so much. Overdone and overlong.
The Fountain? Surely you jest. Hugh Jackman emo-fest? Yeesh!
Labarinto del Fauna? Excellent movie. The cgi on Pan is immaculate.
Bridge to Terabithia? Again, surely you jest. Contrived in its concept, painful in its execution, and overly long.

I just finished watching Renaissance (2006). Utterly stunning. It blows Sin City completely out of the genre. A Scanner Darkly doesn't even compare.

Bridge to Terabithia? Again, surely you jest. Contrived in its concept, painful in its execution, and overly long.
I know the title says "recommended" fantasy movies, but I see a lot of crap listed on this thread so I thought we were listing every fantasy movie

The problem is 'What's a good movie?', opinions vary. I liked Krull, and all it's campiness. I'd never consider it a good movie though.

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

Agreed. I LOVE the animated Lord of The Rings but it ain't that great.

btw Kyle, great avatar. I loved it when the ghost clown hypnotized Shaggy and made him believe he was a lion tamer.

Ghendar - Bringin' the snark!

Champion of the Spider Eater with rider.

If you want more camp than you can shake a rifle butt at, check out Zardos..... you will hate me forever.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

How did you guys talk for so long in a Recommended Fantasy Movies thread, and leave out the greatest fantasy movie of all time?

The Princess Bride.

That's all you really need.  It may be "low" fantasy, but it is fantasy.

Or did I just miss someone posting it?

Vindicated Champion of a Shadow Mastiff!! DoD 36/60
Vindicated Against the Giants called shot: Huge White Dragon: Elder White Dragon AtG 59/60
Demonweb Called shot: Aspect of Baphomet
