When I was a teenager I had a friend that used to do that all the time from his bike.

I had a friend that got arrested for being stupid, yes for being stupid. With that being said, I could go into some of my teenage antics but they are better left where they are. It's bad enough that my kids are somewhat aware of what Dad did when he was growing up.

Cops don't seem to like much of anything. Make bacon references? Cops are upset. Give them the finger? Cops are upset.

Sheesh, you'd think they'd have more of a sense of humor when being abused for doing their jobs

I've wondered what that meant for years, but I had no idea how the heck to spell it and get a google hit. Thanks.

I agree but also keep in mind that many of us live in very low crime areas where the only encounters we ever have with the police are them handing out speeding tickets, them blatantly abusing their sirens to circumnavigate traffic jams, them tazing my bros, etc. It becomes hard to get a balanced perspective on the matter when most of our experiences are very one sided (typically negative or enforcing a law most of us don't believe should be on the books anyhow.... did you know my town has a "no cruising" policy? if you circle the block 3 times in under an hour it's a ticket).

However I'll admit, life with police officers is preferable to the alternative in my mind.

Found this on Wikipedia:

The origin of this gesture is speculative, but is quite possibly thousands of years old. It is identified as the digitus impudicus ("impudent finger") in Ancient Roman writingsΏ] and reference is made to using the finger in the Ancient Greek comedy The Clouds by Aristophanes. It was defined there as a gesture intended to insult another. The widespread usage of the finger in many cultures is likely due to the geographical influence of the Roman Empire and Greco-Roman civilization. Another possible origin of this gesture can be found in the first-century Mediterranean world, where extending the digitus impudicus was one of many methods used to divert the ever present threat of the evil eye.ΐ]

IIRC a variant with the two middle fingers down and index and pinky fingers up was a taunt by Welshmen to the English during the middle ages. The English used to cut the two middle fingers from Welsh bowmen and the "horns" salute was to show that they could still pull their bowstrings.

According to a popular myth the two-fingers salute and/or V sign derives from the gestures of longbowmen fighting in the English army at the Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years' War. The story claims that, before the battle, the French boasted that they would cut two fingers off the right hand of captured archers and that the gesture was a sign of defiance after the greatly outnumbered English won the battle. (This false etymology has also given rise to an alternative name for the gesture, which can also be known as flicking an "archer's salute" or just an "archer's"[citation needed]). However medieval warriors had no interest in capturing common archers that could not be held for ransom, preferring instead to simply kill such prisoners.Ώ] Furthermore, mutilating a prisoner to stop them from using a bow wouldn't make sense, since killing them would stop them from ever serving the enemy again. There is also the fact that accounts from the period make no reference to the French mutilating their prisoners by cutting off their fingers.ΐ] (The first definitive known reference to the V sign is in the works of François Rabelais, a French satirist of the 1500s. Α])

The same story has circulated in the US as a supposed explanation for the use of the middle finger as an obscenity, with the added flourish that the slang term for the sign, "flipping/giving the bird," has something to do with feathers on arrows. This is untrue, as the middle-finger sign dates at least to ancient Rome and symbolizes a penisΒ] "giving the bird" dates to 1800s British theatrical slang, meaning to be driven off stage by goose-like hisses, and was apparently linked to the middle-finger sign by US military pilots in the 1960s. Γ]

The belief that the V sign originated among archers might have its origin in the work of the historian Jean Froissart (c. 1337-c. 1404), who died before the Battle of Agincourt took place. In his "Chronicles," he recounts a story of the English waving their fingers at the French during a siege of a castle, however he makes no reference to which fingers were used meaning that this is not evidence of the origin of the V sign.

The cops in my area are completly and utterly worthless, unless you want to get a speeding ticket. My burglar alarm went off at work and it took them a blazingly fast four hours to respond, and I'm less than a mile from a substation. Had it not been a false alarm I would have been totally wiped out. Here the primary duty must be to enforce traffic, because by the time they respond to an actual crime the offender is long gone.

Evil triumphs when good men fail their morale saves.

1) Pissing off the cops is a bad idea.
2) I have been on the receiving end of a bad cop's ire once (fortunately, only a ticket resulted).
3) There are more than stupid people in prisons. Sadly, quite a few businesses get very cheap employees through our nation's prisons, giving an incentive to keep the prison population nice and high. A sobering thought, especially given a) the rampant racism involved, and b) the naive belief that slavery is actually ended.

Well the whole thing would not have happened if I knew he was a cop.  It was a foggy morning and he was tailgating me, when the highs flashed that pretty much took out my night vision.  Anyways I'm planning on going before the Judge, explain it's my first offence in almost six years and apologize for it.

That's not likely going to happen.  Most of my Driving experince has been on and around the roads of Boston.  I am doing my best to curb my irritation of other drivers on the road these days*.

Oh but that law extends to All Rhode Islander.

It dates back to when a group of disenfranchised Colonists from Massachusetts formed their own "rogue" colony.  The Mass Bay gov responded several nasty laws including the previously mentioned one.

Other Mass blue that are still on the books include:

Bans on Lacy Shirts, Birth Control and just about anything considered "fun".   Another good one is the one that states if you pass through the Boston Commons at night, you are required to have a loaded musket and lit lantern.

Good thing D&D wasn;t around back then, I'm sure the puritans would have banned that too.

In some areas, particularly highways they ought to consider increasing the speed limit.  In several sections of Mass there are highways where 90% of the traffic is going 20 miles over the speed limit.  Me I'm just one of the 9% who go no faster than 10 miles over the limit.

Possbly True. In ID, all our freeways are 75. If you need to go faster than that, it should be a medical emergency.

I feel for you Fella.  The only day we are prohivited ourselves are certain Holidays.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

Cops don't seem to like much of anything. Make bacon references? Cops are upset. Give them the finger? Cops are upset.

Sheesh, you'd think they'd have more of a sense of humor when being abused for doing their jobs

Campus security gets mad at me for continuously referring to them as Spam.

Oh yeah, well I got of the Ticket.  When I showed up to court the Statie didn't bring his paperwork with him.  I got to see the Magistrate yell at him a bit, then she let me off the hook.
