| | I don't really get it. The article says that whenever the trigger is pulled, the universe splits in two. Are they then saying that you can't have a bang in both outcomes? Only opposite outcomes? If that's the case, then I understand. | | Over 270 successful online DDM trades. | |

| The bang can only occur if the quark is spinning in the correct direction. However, every time the trigger is pulled, the quark is spinning in both directions. The universe splits to accommodate both occurrences. Since the person firing the gun exists simultaneously in both realities he's both infinitely dead and infinitely pulling the trigger. Assuming that the human brain isn't automatically destroyed by the paradox, the schism existing in the immortal frame would be eternally bored (and eternally pulling the trigger). Fortunately for humanity, the scenario is completely theoretical.
Once scientists start getting away from the scientific method they cease to be scientists. That's why mathematicians are not actually scientists. They're philosophers (according to several of my friends with degrees in math).
The most fascinating thing about universe theoretical models is that they all work very nicely mathematically or in thought experiments, yet each contains some major flaw when applied in the real universe (worm holes, tachyons, quantum strings, pretty much everything Star Trek bases its technobabble on are purely theoretical--nonexistent/unproven--models). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. | Sadly, this article is pure poppycock.
I don't want to get into a massive quantum physics debate here - there's probably not enough server space to write everything out! ha! - but this thought experiment is not a true measure of universal behavior.
The wave qualities of subatomic particles are often mistakenly interpreted, even by the big brains. Just look at one glaringly inconsistancy in A Brief History of Time. In one chapter, Hawking talks about relativity and the absence of absolute rest. In another chapter he talks about the universe being created from the Big Bang - the genesis of which is essentially a singularity. Now, hold on. If the universe expands violently from a single point outward - a la the Big Bang - that original singularity represents the "center" of the universe... or, absolute rest.
Unfortunately, it's much more complicated than that, but I believe some long-held theories will be disproven in our lifetimes.
Edit: Actually, I think the Hawkings book I was thinking of is Universe in a Nutshell.

| When I teach Philosophy of Science I always spend a couple weeks on quantum theory and the Schrodinger's Cat stuff always gets a lot of excitement. Still, it's just an interpretation. In my estimation, 100 years from now, folks will be working from Bohm's assumptions and making more progress toward an understanding of multi-dimensional phenomena than with the present, substantially Copenhagen-interpretation models.
If you think your brain exploded already, vanrulzz, read some more on quantum theory. This stuff is just the beginning.

Your syntax just made my head explode why? You're in desperate need of some commas or possible a semi-colon. Subordinate clauses are subordinate for a reason: they must be kept in their place.
