| You guys haven't hit the $4 mark yet? I'm paying $3.90 at my cheap station but it averages $3.99 around here. I've seen it at $4.05 down the street and I'm scared to drive by the expensive station near Stanford...I'll bet it's at $4.15-$4.20 right now.
It cracks me up thinking about all the emails people were forwarding when gas was $1.80 a gallon and idiots were thinking that we'd make an impact if we all didn't buy gas on a certain date. Remember that? These people didn't think about the fact that, sure, stations would lose out on money that day, but they'd spike in sales the day before & after when those same people go to fill up their tanks again.
In a 10 year period, gas has become 4 times as expensive as it used to be. That's insane.
I thought the whole reason we invaded Iraq was to get their oil....that must be some fine good oil for our prices to raise when we get new supplies rather than get cheaper

| That's a lot harder in the U.S. than in Europe since we're so spread out.
I'm lucky enough to have public transit (actually luck has nothing to do with it, I picked a house near public transit so I could use it). However my wife changed jobs and now has the option of 2 trains and 2 buses making a ~4 hour commute or driving 23 miles. Needless to say, she drives. And 23 miles is a bit far to bike, especially as most streets aren't terribly friendly to bikers outside of the downtown areas.
Back in college when everything was within 2 miles, I biked//walked everywhere and loved it. Now it's just really not a possibility.

Nice! I would bike to work if I didn't cross so many heavy traffic streets, and if there was a more direct route to work (lots of unnecessary miles on my trip because of a closed bridge). | | Originally posted by Schooly_D Username - he deals in minis Champion of Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor

| I just moved to a new house back in October and I am now only 5 minute drive to work (versus a 25 minute drive).Â
Of course since we have not yet sold our old house, 10 months now, the wife had to get a job (luckily a decent one) just to keep our heads above water and now she is the one driving 30 minutes each way to work. Â
What I am saving on gas is getting eatin up by the wife having to drive to work.Â

| Each weekday, I travel 12 miles to and from one place of employment.
On Monday and Thursday, I travel 100 miles to and from another place of employment.
Each week, therefore, I travel at least 260 miles, just for work.
And, at almost $4 per gallon, and in a vehicle that just barely averages over 20 miles per gallon, that's...
260 mi * (1 gal / 20 mi) * ($4 / gal) = $52 a week for gas.
*sigh*

| No kidding. I was driving home from the grocery store with my wife yesterday, and we were talking about this. Gasoline has become, essentially, a monthly $250+ bill. What a burden.
