| As prices fall, Utah steadily refuses to bend to the trend.
Earlier today gas was $4.05/gal at a boxclub. Most gas stations are showing $4.15 on their signs.
I'm not liking how readily we're all adapting to thinking $3/gal + is cheap. I'm guessing the price of gasoline will never drop below $3/gallon again. Considering that the government sucks up ~40% of oil company profits you'd think that the politicians would be complaining less that oil companies are making fat loot.
Kind of sad when I was looking at 30 mpg cars today and thinking...man, what gas guzzlers

| It's between 4.04 and 4.17 here. Just heard on the news the local refinery plans on shutting down for x months to retool. That'll give them the opportunity to hike gas up to $5/gallon for the short term, however, long term projection is ~$2/gallon somewhere near the beginning of '09 (with oil barrels consistently dropping after the speculative boom and refineries increasing capacity).
I'd be happy with $2 a gallon. It's not as good as the $0.89 I paid last time I owned a car but with inflation it's not terrible. $4/gallon is just ludicrous.
The funniest thing about the high price of gas is that rather than encourage mass transit options it's literally bankrupting them. Bus lines are shutting down service everywhere and light rail (esp. the local light rail) are literally falling apart because the cars are overloaded/overworked and the oh-so-intelligent transit planners underplanned commuting by roughly 20,000 people per day. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Bus lines are shutting down service everywhere and light rail (esp. the local light rail) are literally falling apart because the cars are overloaded/overworked and the oh-so-intelligent transit planners underplanned commuting by roughly 20,000 people per day. That's an amazing little story. You'd think they could just buy more train cars/engines with the increased profits. Going out of business because of too many customers is something else. Profits would imply that our local transit authority was competently run like a business. Instead, it's run like a government bureau. Huge overhead, incredibly poor planning, and extra-poor decision making. Also with fuel prices where they are mass transit faces the dual problem of high fuel cost (takes fuel to run buses/trains) and low sales tax revenues (Joe taxpayer can't afford to spend as much on consumables so the states are taking in less money to subsidize public transportation).
Instead of buying a fleet of new cars (~$12 million per car) they decided to cut costs by buying used cars (~$8 million per car). Half of those cars became useless within the first 6 months and the rest are questionable. So, instead of spending an extra ~$4 million per car to get new cars they're spending ~$16 million (half on the car, half on maintenance/repair) per car trying to keep the used piles of crap running. Currently they've got roughly 50% of the cars they purchased available for use (the rest are in various states of disrepair at the rail yard and aren't really getting fixed because the mechanics are needed to keep the on-line cars going).
The rail line was planned to support between 10000 and 20000 daily commuters. The university to which the rail line connects has roughly 50000 daily commuters, more than half of which ride the trains. That doesn't include the additional 50-100000 business commuters daily. The rail line was designed to run 2-4 car trains (expecting to primarily run 2 car trains except during peak hours (8am and 6pm). Since more than double the number of commuters use the rail line than they planned for they've put more than double the recommended miles on the train cars effectively ruining them by wearing them out twice as fast as they planned for.
It's a total joke.
