Not sure who'd be surprised that a totalitarian dictator (not referring to Medvedev) would invade a neighboring country. Seems to be par for the course.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I think what the hang up is not that Russian defended South Ossetian, but that Russia persisted to invade and bomb Georgia after getting control of South Ossetia.

i think it was to show them that they should think twice about hurting the russian people and hurt there peacekeepers and just because they are close to the west that won't help them as no one and i mean no one wants to pick a fight with russia (well georgia had to learn that lession) | |

| South Ossetia is a Georgian province.
The analogy should be if Texas ceded from the U.S. and the U.S. used military action to attempt to prevent the cecession and THEN Mexico invaded Texas would Mexico be justified in doing so?
To further stretch the analogy after Mexico invades Texas they also instill a naval blockade of the Gulf as well as move troops into Louisiana.
Is Mexico still simply coming to the aid of another "country" (which is simply a splinter province)?
The analogy isn't too bad either, since there are an awful lot of Mexican nationals/citizens living in Texas (much like there are a large number of Russian nationals/citizens living in Georgia).
Can't really say Georgia has been handling their problems with Ossetia well for the past 16 years (South Ossetia has been trying to gain independence from both Georgia AND Russia since 1992) but there really isn't any legitimate defense of Russia's actions in this case.
To turn to another analogy, would anyone defend Hitler's invasion of Poland to give aid to German nationals who had been seeking independence from Poland? Same situation, different era. Look where that got the world... | |

The problem with ethics decisions is that they're always contextual.

Seriously, though I feel for people being oppressed around the world, I really think it's about time the US took a few steps back and started worrying about feeding, sheltering and providing basic health care and necessities for it's own people. I think American citiens should be of a greater importance to America then the 35th civil war this decade in Lndjrktocmejistan.
