This was one of those strange ideas that sort of filled in some of the dead-time in between some of the earlier sets, when the overall level of impatience for the next set was so high that people were coming up with almost any crazy idea to help push along a trade.

The Box Around The World was pretty much just a box - but it would be passed from trader to trader, over the course of numerous trades, to travel as far as it could. The details of each box launched were different. Some were better looking than others (mine was a mess), and most had a "pilot" of some kind to act as a kind of totem along it's way. Every Pilot was a little different; these would usually be home-brew repaints (the color pink was recurrant for some reason) of common or uncommon minis that would stay with the box to see the world, and perhaps to someday return.

Some boxes included special "take a gift - leave a gift" cargos, which would start out with two unusual items (possibly minis, possibly something else; I once got a 1/64 scale Vancouver Canucks Zamboni). Each recipient would take one of the two items, and replace it with something new before sending the box on it's way.

Other boxes had elaborate themes (such as a wide influence from the old "Spelljammer" air ships) and plotlines that were woven over time by the people who traded them. There were attempted mutinies and sublime romances mentioned in the posts that nobody could say for certain DID NOT happen.

Of course, the real work of a BATW was to carry regular trades - hopefully big ones, and ideally with people outside your own country. Individual BATW carried litterally thousands of dollars worth of minis over their various journeys, travelling tens of thousands of miles. These regular trades were the real point - but the fact that it was a BATW just made it a little more cool. I liked to think that it was in some way helpful to encourage international trading - which everyone now seems to avoid because of the expense, risk of loss, and other competitive disadvantages with "domestic" trading.

My most prized mini - bar none - is a fantastically hand re-painted Ember Human Monk that I recieved as a BATW gift. She sports a brilliant pink jumpsuit, trods on carefully laid model grass, and proudly flys the Australian Flag from her staff!

At some strange point in time, the BATW lost favor. Many of the boxes just got lost. Others were intercepted and destroyed by folks who had never agreed to take on the responsibility of recieving one, but somehow ended up getting one anyway. There never were all that many to begin with, and by the time Maxminis migrated from the "Old Forum" to it's current state - the idea was a loss. At this time - as the inactivity on this thread seems to suggest - the idea is as cold as the ocean floor itself.

If you see a BATW - let me know!!!

I could see the interest waning, so I traded with the holder of my box, just to get my box home. It was fun, but mine didn't really make it "around the world". More like here to Canada, to Australia, to the Netherlands, back to Canada (or Australia), them home. It was a fun thing to do. I never did calculate how many miles my box traveled. I asked people to put newspaper clippings from their home paper in the box, but not many did. Got a front page from Canada of the Pope's death though.

I finally recieved my BATW back, and promptly sent it on it's way again(can't remember who too though). By the time I had got my box back, it had been just over 12 months since it's first 'flight' (to Smith568 - who recieved my Aussie Ember), and the BATW and it's original pilot (Pink Jozan) had amassed well over 500,000 km. I contacted GBoWW, about it with photo's of everything (including all the messages from the 30 or so recipients), but never recieved a reply from them, unfortunately.

I wonder if Jozan is still flying the blue skies of the world?

And if you're getting out trading, how will you ever manage to get Pink Jozan back? [)]

I have no intentions of getting him back, but an update from the current 'owner' of his box would be pretty cool. (Just to know he is still out there and on the move)
