In general if the defect was original condition, and does not really impair the viusal quality of the mini it would be fair game for trading. Many of us have less than stellar minis straight from the bag now sitting on our shelves. IF the defect or mistake is obvious, then it would probably be a good idea to mention this to potential traders. A skirmish player might not even care, an RPG'er might find it gives the mini some character and a collector might totally reject the mini as being "trash". Different goals and different expectations. Much like player of card games and their concern about the condition of the cards themselves, over and beyond what the card stands for. Major flaws like arms missing should be disclosed, and yes WoTC will generally make good on flawed merchandise.

Half the time when trading I don't really look to carefully at the mini I am trading or recieving. Minor paint defects are expected and I don't think it takes away from anything.

I think a lot of people send their worst looking minis out for trade. Once I cut another trader a trade that I felt heavily favored him. I received the promised mini (a bone devil), but it was a terrible looking figure. By far the worst painted bone devil I've seen to date. I still have it because I'm too embarassed to force it onto anyone else. I was kind of annoyed, but it was what he promised to send, a bone devil with stat card.

In general, it's nice to know what your getting and more information is better. I don't think it's a big problem to send out less than stellarly painted figures. However, if you're concerned about it, a quick email to your trading partner would be a kind thing to do.

I do the exact opposite when I'm looking at multiple minis, I send the better looking one.

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

I'm somewhere in between. If the mini is still bagged that I am trading, I just send it regardless of what the details look like (since it clearly is in "original" condition) and it is pretty hard to make a real good judgement when they are still bagged anyway. However if the mini is an opened one, I do look them over when selecting which ones to send in a trade or sale and pick "good" ones. Some minis have serious base issues and those I tend to remove from being traded.

Hmm, I have a Bladeling missing an arm also...

Since I paint minis as well, I usually see lots of imperfections in the paint jobs. I spend hours on mine as opposed to the quick jobs I'm sure these get, the bad paint jobs come with the territory. From comments I've seen posted here and at Wizards I bet my standards are higher than many others, I would probably have to say something about every mini I traded. I have yet to see an Adventuring Wizard in person that is painted very well - and that's a recent rare.

If it was really bad (Mage Knight bad) I would point it out before trading, but I usually don't look that closely if I'm just going to sell/trade the mini.

I actually trade my best minis out, All in bag if available if not I email asking if out of bag is ok before I send. I went through and was getting one persons together and the dwarf wizards staff was broken and I had to spend 20 minutes finding my spare in my set to send them because it was a damaged piece. I mean you couldnt tell unless you pushed it sideways but still =/

Ive noticed my expectations for minis to be packaged was a bit high in return and I expect out of package minis in return now that ive done some trades. I get alot of smooshed minis even with the boxes but I dont really complain or care because you can fix it with a hair dryer in a minute and its just part of the shipping. :)

So my opinion is, if its not in atleast just out of bag condition, send them your collected one instead. Afterall do you want them picking through and finding the worst ones to send to you? Do unto others....

*edit*
just wondering, does the company replace minis that are broken out of box? Like when you open it its already broken and the plastic of the wrapper is barely even wrinkled one bit and the mini is broke. Ive got a few like that its always a let down =/ (not from traders, from my booster boxes)

When I agree to a trade, I send the best I have available. I figure its my fault I didnt make sure they were of the same quality. I once had to send a LEE card that I didnt have an extra of because I just wasnt paying attention (got a second through a bulk purchase and didnt notice there was no card until too late).

Out of curiosity, anyone else get any of the SWM that had bases scratched beyond recognition?

Yes they will replace broken minis or replace cards. I don't remember the policy exactly, but its all covered on their web site.
