OK, I'm doing my first trade to Canada, and I'm trying to remember all the hoops we have to jump through to get it right. I'm working with a new trader and want to give him a good impression of cross-border trading![)]

1} Declare as a gift under $10 value

2) Wasn't there something about typing the Canadian address in all caps?

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

all in caps? why, they have difficulty with lower case?

I sent both my trades to Canada in title format and both got there just fine. Who came up with this theory?

Yes, placing the lowest value is very important as gifts or collectibles over 15 dollars in value are 15.56 % taxable to Quebec and means a visit to the post office sometimes the next day only to go pay that bill with proper identification. Quebec being the highest taxed province in Canada means other province members face at the very least a 7.5% tax in Canadian funds. My orders have been opened a lot lately, Canadian customs seem to be getting more "pissy", pardon the word... [:(]

what ever you people do when shipping to canada don't mark "other" and don't give some large dollar amount

"gift" and $10 is that too hard to remember?

we as canadian spend on average 3 times what you Americans do to trade

so you spend a $1.50-ish to send a trade, i spend $5.60 and then have to pay customs another $9 because you can't fill out a form

done ranting

Well kritter, you'll be happy to know that based on this thread I just sent Melrune's package marked "gift" and valued at $5.00(US), and I typed the address all in caps!.[:)]

I kinda feel sorry for our northern friends, the USPS employee confided to me that Canada Post is way pickier about everything than our service is.

How is it the "americans" fault that your system sucks and it is pickier?

Just remind your trade partner to your terms for ease of pick-up instead of generalizing. And if they forget, take it out on them.

I've had 2 trades with Canadians and they went just fine because I took it upon myself to research and see what was the best way to do it...if you had bad experiences blame your partner and yourself for not being explicit enough (if that was the case).

Generalizing = bad.

And for me to send to Canada is cheaper than to send inside the U.S.; same packages, same weight...so it is not all bad.

Ah, if only I had congress-persons to write to... ;)

Instead, I'm stuck with a lousy (liberal) MP... (both my home riding and @ university!)

Still, if I've learned anything from "Yes, Minister", it's that we should really hate the folks in charge: the bureaucrats!

The all caps things is fairly resent, I mailed a package to Canada late last year and had no problem, I just mailed a package to kritter last week and was sent back to redo the label in all capitals. The postal worker told me it was a new rule.

An odd thing just happened to me on the receive end, I just got kritters package and it had been obviously opened and resealed with a us customs sticker saying opened for inspection u.s. customs agriculture. Anyone else have this happen? I understand the u.s. customs part but the agriculture part is a mystery.

Just a quick note: shipping to the US has increased to 5.95$ and 7.30$ international. In
Canadian money, granted, but it still is an increase and it seems our speed has decreased
since then. I blame the Liberals...

A more...shall we say, herbally inclined friend clued me in to customs agriculture doing random drug searches and our mini boxes are just the right size to cause suspicion. How naive am I that this never occured to me.

But now I have to ask, what are you guys smoking up there and why aren't you sharing. [)]

I think i just got lucky. I sent a package to Sir Bozak The Damned and didn't make sure that I capitalized everything, I simply printed the e-mail with his signature and cut the address out. I was in a bit of a hurry while packing and I didn't even think about it. If it is indeed a problem when labels aren't in caps., maybe it would be wise for the Canadian traders to send their address in caps.

Thanks. The 'packing' wasn't rushed, I was just in a hurry to get out of the house cause I had a bus to catch. I did it in the morning while getting ready for work.

That would explain it, hehe

Seriously, Tactician's package to me arrived today with his and my address in scrambled letters, maybe even hard to read and not in capitals and I received it fine. It might be a
few lazy or zealous employees that started this rumour about the full addresses in capitals.
Nevertheless, I think it is safer to do so. I use all capital letters when shipping to the to the US as well.

Yes I have had various problems with this like for example once I ended up having to pay an extra 38 dollars come some American took it upon himself to send ups and it took themover a week to finally get the package to me cause they couldn't specify a time that they would show up at and 3 days out of that week told me they had come to my door, but I had been there watching for the mail carrier each day no one showed so I finally had them deliver it to my work place instead. I have also when informing people from the states of this situation with the marking as gift under $10 they have said nope I'm sending it my way as your customs issues are not my problem

but I am glad to see that you wonderful folks here understand and do your best to abide by these things so as the fat cats in ottawa can't get more of my bloody money when i have you ship stuff to me ....yayyyyy

Glumag glumag glumag. That's what we DO! it's our thing! 10 yrs of Liberal (I'm jumping on the L bashing bandwagon here ;) rule has left us insecure with ourselves so we must blame "americans" in order to make us feel better. [)]

I'm lucky. I'm 1/4- French, 1/2 American, 1/4 English, and 1/32 Aboriginal... and 100% Canadian =D

I get to insult everyone and can't be called a racist or predjudice cus for some reason people are allowed to bash their own people free of charge. 'cept Dave Chappelle...but he's good.

Liberals suck.

Out postal system sucks.

Canadians Rule.

Harper is cool.

It costs more for me to mail a pacakge of miniatures within my own city, than it costs to mail the same package, to anywhere in the states, or even overseas to Australia or France, etc.

I've never heard of the all caps thing, but clean and easy to read writting is a no brainer.

I have new information on Canadian-bound packages, or at least I have not seen it posted and because of it's utmost importance, I am posting it here.

Please make sure the ca$h value is very low, 10$ works and I think 15 could also do. Please remember to mark them as gifts, as Canada Post now charges a NEW 5$ handling fee when duties are to be paid, no matter the declared value of the package, it might even be higher than the entire duty fees, so please mark packages as gifts and with the lowest amount possible. Thank you in advance.
