Because I am an idiot. I thought you were trying to get together a list of everyone from this sight who had already qualified. Sorry for the confusion. | | Jason Slingerland

| I can't decide if I should go to this Grinder nonsense. My guess is that there will be something like 8 rounds and that I'll go 6-2 and that one of my losses will be to someone who also goes 6-2 (or worse) and that I will have 1) burned an entire day and 2) not qualified.
There's also this daunting prospect: if I make it through, I've got basically no recovery time before I'm going to get matched up against someone who, quite likely, qualified some long time ago and is all fresh and ready to eat me for lunch.
On the third hand ([:)]) it might be good to go through the Grinder just to meet some of you folks who are in a similar situation.
Speaking of which, is the championship open to public viewing? I mean, can I just walk around the tables and watch all you champs playing?

| My friend who drove with me to KY who didn't qualify should be playing in the grinder, Rave0021.
I've heard mixed reports about the "grinder" from last year. Some said it was horrible, others said that not a lot of people showed up and it did make it rougher to play the next day, but not the endurance test it's been made out to be. I'm sure, either way, there will be more people there this year than last.
It'd have to be aboslutely huge to go 8 rounds of swiss though (ie, for you to play 8 games and not be a qualifier). Montreal had 52 players and 6 rounds of swiss right if memory serves. Correct me if I'm wrong (which I probably am), wouldn't it have to be over 128 people to have more than 7 swiss rounds? | | Champion of the Minotaur Knight Herald of the Epic Snig | |

| Yeah, it is. The crowd was pretty reasonable sized during the semi-/quarter-/finals last year. Luckily I am not easily distracted. :P

| | I've heard they're taking top 8 out of the grinder to the "big show" the next day. It might end up being trivial to qualify there. | | "Why am I all sticky and naked? Did I miss something fun?" -Vindicated champion of Tordek, Dwarf Champion | |

| "trivial".... I couldn't make top 8 in Massachusetts...
I am going, I expect to qualify, and I will start Nationals, but will probably drop.
I want to Qualify, but I have no expectations that I will have the time to design, test/play enough bands to be competitive in the finals.
Instead, I'll go play AAM....
Striderlotr is going to the MeatGrinder with me....

If there are 40 or fewer players, and if a quarter to a half of those players are on-the-spot players who aren't bringing top bands, then, yes, it might be trivial.
If there are 65 to 80 players and if only 20 or so are unprepared, then it's going to be a helluva long day and rough to get in. Even if players drop out over the course of the event (I assumed 10 drop out of a field of 72), there are 13 people with one or zero losses after 5 rounds of Swiss. And, of those, most have one loss, and, of those, very few are losses to undefeated opponents.
I don't want to be a pessimist, but given the popularity of DDM, the Grinder might be grinding indeed.
Edit: On the other hand, if Maxminis people face each other in the early rounds, they could take an Intentional Draw. I mean, if DCI is giving away 1 point for this, and if there are tons of players there, taking a 1 point draw after a 3 point win might be a good way to spend the second round. More chaff is eliminated, some players drop out, and you and your opponent get some rest for future rounds. And, since you now have fewer points than the absolute leaders, you're less likely to face them until the end anyway.
Speaking of which, is there a playoff scheduled, or is it the top 8 from the Swiss that get invited?
Edit x2: As of 2:29PM EST July 6, only 19 people have registered.

* pre-registered So far I know: AesophDarkfable* PatEllis* Rave0021 Striderlotr*
Possible: ChristopherGroves friend Vrecknidje Nycfarmkid +friend
I'm going to register myself, my son, and my son's friend today. The three of us went to the Howell, MI qualifier and haven't been able to make any others. Additionally, a friend of mine who was also at Howell will be trying to sign up for the event on site.
So, you could put my entry as Vrecknidj + three friends.

| I wonder how many people "off the street" will sign up to play.
I wonder how many of them will be skilled at warband building, tile placement, and combat.
I wonder how many Angelfire bands we'll see.
I wonder how many people who've already qualified will be wandering around the room watching potential adversaries.

| I'm very happy to see this change (to 16), I just posted to the WotC boards to try to get confirmation.
This should help eliminate a bit of bad random luck from effecting the invites...

Gonna start focusing on the SoCal Championship, starting with this coming Saturday's sealed AF event at Outpost 2000. With any luck, I'll even be bringing a friend.
Good luck to all Maxminis and MN guys headed for the grinder and tourney!
