| I didn't get to play against you, but I remember seeing your band.
I won the Pittsburgh Pre-Release, although two of the games were very close.
My boxes contained: (my picks in bold) quote: - Aspect of Kord - Rikka - Earth Elemental - Xorn - Half Orc Executioner - Gith Monk - Merc Captain - Elf Stalker - Lloth's Sting - Halfling Sneak - Spider of Lloth - Orc Skeleton - Monitor Lizard - Lantern Bearer - Trog Barbarian - Gold Dwarf Soldier
I took the Treasure Room, Mushroom Tangle, and Creeping Tangle as well as, I think it was Starting Tile 6. I used the tangles to deny first turn assault points and split up warbands a few times, taking advantage with Rikka often on Round 2 or Round 3.
Round 1 - BYE
Round 2 - Defeated Tim Bauer by basing a Drow Riding Lizard with Kord, then slowly taking out his commander, wizard tactician, and various hitters for a pretty decisive win even though Tim played well.
He failed a lot of Stun saves, and I routed his Drow Riding Lizard off the board so early that it really set him back. He just didn't realize how fast Kord could move.
Round 3 - Faced a near mirror band with Kord, Rikka and an Earth Elemental, but, the player missed the fact that your lowest non-commander is a commander 0, so he used a Kobold Miner as his commander. This guy was a good player who never played SEALED before and didn't read the handout or hear the rules about the commander until after he started playing. His band was stronger than mine, but, I used Rikka to kill the Kobold (and the Elemental) before she died, and, it was down hill from there for him.
This guy won 3 games with a Kobold Miner as his commander, so, he really was a good player who made one big, big mistake.
Round 4 - Faced Scott Pyle with a Justicar, Trog Captain, Trog Barb, Grimlock Barb, Winter Wolf and a few more hitters and low cost support.
I made a HORRIBLE mistake in this match in round 2 or 3 and moved my COMMANDER into melee instead of my Lantern Bearer when I got the pieces confused. I lost a lot of initiatives, and Kord had to rally without a commander, but, Kord did rally and killed the Judicator on his next swing.
A lot of his minis I was able to sort of single out. The Gith Monk took out a few pieces of fodder.
Scott didn't think this game was close, but, I felt like it was pretty close and hinged on Kord making his morale save with no commander (I rolled a 12).
Round 5 - Kurt had a Deep Dragon, Orc Paladin, Wizard Tactician, Earth Elemental, Dolgaunt Monk, Guardsman...
I agressively tangled him into his starting tile and forced him to get 1st turn assault points with the Deep Dragon. I got first turn points with the Monk. For the first four rounds, we tied on Assault Points...
In rounds 1, 2, & 3, I lost each initiative, and the Wizard Tactician routed a Lloth's sting and the Dolgaunt killed my Orc Skeleton.
I appeared next to the wizard tactician in round 2, but he won initiative, risked an AoO, then passed his morale save to get away.
But my real plan was to go after the Half-Orc Paladin if he bit on the danger to the Tactician, and I double moved the Monk, Kord, and Single Moved Rikka to base the Half Orc Paladin, but she missed with a 2.
Lost init in round three, and the Earth Elemental KILLED the Gith Monk with a hit and a Natural 20 before I could stun the Half Orc Paladin with the auto 20.
Kord and Rikka both hit the Paladin, taking him down to 20.
Rikka took a beating from the Dragon and Half Orc and Guardsman. The only GOOD news from the dice up until this point was that she actually made her morale save. I was really feeling the heat of the moment with each roll, "C'mon! I need a good roll!"
The Executioner was closing in for when the commander would go down... he was a big performer for me in other matches when I killed the commander and he was flanking at +16 to hit for 30 Magic Damage in that situation.
Finally, Kord killed the commander, Rikka killed the Wizard, the Earth Elemental was gone, and the Half Orc Executioner hit and routed the Dolgaunt Monk (all in round 4). Finally, the dice turned back for me with some non-horrid rolls (I didn't need great rolls). Rikka did die to the Dragon finally, (her DR kept her around for a while and made her a tough kill).
In the end, Kord had to make one Morale save while fighting the Deep Dragon... he made it, and I finished off the rest of the warband.
If I had lost this game, just do to the way the schedule worked out and how some people left early, I would have finished third. But I managed to win a tough game vs Kurt (who has improved his game insanely in the last few months) and went 5-0 for first place.
Kurt took 2nd by just 2% points in Strength of Schedule as they were both 4-1, but Kurt had beat the 3rd place player in Round 4.
I brought down three friends from my gaming group who finished 6th, 8th, and 11th in the field of 21.
I had good pulls, but not insanely so. I think I chose the right pieces of some good options (like taking the Half-Orc Executioner over the Xorn or Trog Barb was a tough decision... or deciding not to work in the Earth Elemental with my Merc was a consideration too).
I figured with Rikka and Kord and the Gith Monk, I'd be killing or stunning a lot of commanders and could bring in the Half-Orc Executioner as a clean up hitter who dished up to 30 magic damage with a high degree of accuracy.
I'll talk about the pieces over on Skirmish Discussion.
Great game to all... there were really some intelligent opponents in the field, and I was fortunate to be able to win.
