| There were six players at yesterday’s Epic Tournament at Other Realms in Gaithersburg, MD. We had 3 legal maps to choose from (Lost Temple, Tomb of Queen Peregrine, and Hellspike). The participants were:
Jim Behnke (jdb2112) Beholder Beholder Dark Naga Gauth Warforged Titan Orog Warlord -Orc Brute -Orc Savage Snig -Goblin Skirmisher -Goblin Skirmisher -Goblin Skirmisher Spellstiched Hobgoblin Zombie Hellspike Map?
Aron Reif (aron1) Large Silver Dragon Large Silver Dragon Couatl Cleric of Dol Arrah Aspect of Kord Aspect of Kord Rikka, Angelic Avenger Mialee, Elf Wizard Queen of Tomb Pereguine Map
Terry Bryant (unknown Maxminis handle) Epic Elminster of Shadowdale Archmage Archmage Wand Expert Hellspike Map
Daniel Koch (Daniel_Tick) Beholder Beholder Dark Naga Urthok the Vicious Epic Justicator Helmed Horror Helmed Horror Duergar Warrior Lost Temple Map
Ray Sultz (Raymo13) I don’t know the complete band, but it included: Archmage Aspect of Kord Champion of Eilistraee Mounted Drow Patrol Mounted Drow Patrol Lost Temple Map
David Mindock (dmindock) (not sure about this one) Epic Marut Epic Marut Cleric of Dol Arrah Village Priest Caravan Guard Caravan Guard Dwarf Artificer Lantern Bearer Hellspike Map
I tried to take photos of these matches, but the pictures didn’t turn out very well, so I’m not going to bother to include them. My first match was against Jim and his 15 activation Dual Beholder/Warforged Titan band. It’s possible to get more than 15 activations in a 500pt band, but not easy. I wasn’t worried about being out-activated per se, but an extra 7 activations was more than I was expecting. I won map initiative, so we played on the Tomb of Queen Peregrine Map. I also won setup initiative, so I made Jim set up first. Since he out-activated me by so much, Jim held his WFT, both Beholders, Gauth, and Orog until after I went. He pounded one of my AoKs with Melee Reach 3, and used his Sniglets to block any chance of retribution. I attacked the WFT with one of the LSDs (had a Magic Weapon courtesy of Mialee), which was a mistake. I should have ignored the WFT and concentrated all firepower on the Beholders. The other LSD and AoK went for the Beholders, Naga, and Gauth. With the WFT wailing away on the AoK, it didn’t take long for him to be killed. The LSD was fairly useless against the WFT, so I ignored it after the first round and moved on to help with the Beholders. Rikka popped in behind the Orog and got a crit, but after a few rounds, the Orog was the one left standing. I don’t remember exactly how the last couple rounds went exactly, so my details might be wrong. I killed one Beholder, but my second AoK fell. The Naga got two lightning bolts off on one LSD and the CODA, and the other LSD failed a morale save and fled. One of the LSDs got trampled by the WFT. The game ended at the hour mark, and since Jim had killed both AoKs and Rikka versus losing a Beholder and fodder, Jim won on points.
Record: 0-1
My second match was against Daniel’s Dual Beholder/Justicator band. Man, 4 beholders in two matches. I was shocked to see so many beholders, considering only three maps are legal and one features smoke, which handicaps Beholders pretty heavily. I won map and setup initiative again, and again we played on Queen Peregrine with Daniel setting up first. I set up all my forces in one corner, opposite his beholders and across from his Justicator. I advanced my band towards the center of the map, with the dragons up front to take any Beholder rays. I used the two AoKs to take out the Justicator, and then based the two Beholders with an LSD each. I killed the Dark Naga with two Cold Breath Weapons, and I popped Rikka in behind Urthok. One of the Beholders turned Rikka to stone, but I took out Urthok with a critical from one of the AoKs. The other AoK fell to the two Helmed Horrors. After both commanders were gone, I concentrated on the Beholders, who fell to the two dragons soon after. Daniel conceded when all he had left were two out-of-command Helmed Horrors and I still had two fairly healthy dragons, a Couatl, and the CODA (and maybe a Kord).
Record: 1-1
My third match was against Terry’s Epic Elminster/Dual Archmage band. An interesting thing about this match was that Terry won nearly every initiative roll (probably a dozen in all), even though I had the better commander rating. We played on the Hellspike map, with me starting on the hellspike side. Before the first initiative roll was made, I popped Rikka into the victory area on the opposite side of the wall from his starting area. My first activation was to move Rikka in to base his two archmages. I knew Terry was going to try to get some Mordy’s Swords on my LSDs, so my plan was to keep his spellcasters based, preferably with AoKs. I succeeded in paralyzing one of his Archmages, and killed it with an AoK. The other Archmage got both Mordy’s Swords off on an LSD, but was hit for around 50 hp, so Terry withdrew it to get tile points. I forgot about Elminster’s Silver Fire, so I foolishly lined up both LSDs, the Couatl, and an AoK, and took 30 unavoidable damage on each. I surrounded Elminster with both AoKs, and went after the Wand Expert with an LSD, while the other LSD withdrew to get healing from the CODA. Elminster routed one Kord, and the other one a few rounds later. The LSD that took the Mordy’s Swords took out the last Archmage, but soon fell. The CODA rallied both AoKs, and returned them to fight Elminster, but Elminster soon killed each. I was left to chase a weakened Elminster with a CODA and an LSD with full hit points. Eventually, Elminster got off a Mordy’s Sword on the dragon, but it took too long to work. Elminster finally fell to two castings of Deific Vengeance from the CODA.
Record: 2-1
Final standings:
Jim was undefeated (3-0), netting him 1st place and two Deathknell boosters. My tiebreakers were apparently slightly better than Ray’s and Daniel’s, so I got 2nd place even though all three of us were 2-1, getting me one Aberrations booster. I think David and Terry both went 0-3.

I felt that it was the best choice out of a meager selection. The choices were: Lost Temple, Tomb of Queen Peregrine, and Hellspike.
I wanted to stay away from Hellspike because not all the smoke rules have been finalized yet (regarding blindsight-enabled commanders, for instance). Plus, the thought was that I didn't want my Kords out of LOS from the slower CODA, because I knew that they would be making morale checks fairly often and I needed the +7.
I ruled out Lost Temple because I wanted Victory Areas for Rikka's Waylay ability.
So that leaves Queen Peregrine. Not an ideal choice, but the only one I had left. I would have preferred a map with a bit more cover.
In hindsight, with all the Beholders that showed up, Hellspike probably would have been the best choice. I assumed that nobody would bother with Beholders specifically because of the existence of the Hellspike map. Boy, was I wrong. | | Champion of the Thoqqua

| Thanks for the report, Aron. Here's my side of the story:
GAME 1: Terry on "Lost Temple" Terry moved very well, but a spellcaster band againt a dual-Beholder is tough! Terry managed to kill one of the Beholder in the first round, so I had to put my army to the atack. Justicator against Elminster, and both Helmed Horrors after the Archmages. The remaining Beholder did his job keeping LoS.
1-0
GAME 2: Aron on "Tomb of Queen Peregrine" This one was hard... as Aron told, that's what happened. When I saw those LSDs coming, I knew it - I was doomed!
1-1
GAME 3: David on "Hellspike" Damn smoke! My Beholders were useless, so I had to do something, and do it fast. I've sacrificed both of my Helmed Horrors, one for each Marut, while the Justicator was after the commanders. I got lucky, both commanders routed and could not rally, and the Justicator was back in action. The beholders found a LoS for a Marut, and after many slides, I got a couple of desintegrations. I could have played this last game better, I did not think of the possibility of sliding the Maruts into the lava pits.
Final result: 2-1
But since I lost the game against Aron, he got the 2nd place!
Overall, it was an awesome game-day! Thanks everyone! | | - Vindicated Night Below Called Shot: Darkmantle - Desert of Desolation Called Shot: Merchant - Champion of the Nymph

| Tell Moses talk is cheap!! [}:)]
You gonna be at Winter Fantasy?
Oh yeah, if you want to lay the smack down you have until May. Then I move to Massachusetts and the NE players can show me just how bad a player I really am.
