As promised here is my report.

kestrel.ca wrote up a great report here: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=20717
I yoinked some of the stuff he did and posted it below (like typing up the warbands and the players). I did add the maps each player used.

So first some general thoughts:

I came up in a car from Calgary to Edmonton (about a 3 hour drive) with Terry, Ken and George.

This was a very small qualifier, only 11 people! I thought there would be at least 20+. I was concerned when I got to the store about space. There was enough physical space, but there weren’t that many tables. Of course as it turned out I didn’t need to worry.

The judge was good. She does play D&D mini’s and I think she has some experience judging Magic tournaments as well. Ken mentioned to me after the tournament that during a match one of the players didn’t seem to understand that Blindsight effectively ignored Fog (for his Marut), and when the judge was called over she knew exactly the answer and quickly called it. I felt that if she was not as familiar with the more esoteric rulings she was very professional in her calls.

The store was very professional while I was there, though it did still have some of that “new store” rough edges around it. They provided a good judge and I was happy with their organization of the event. (what little I did see – Terry was responsible for gettings us organized and getting there). They held random drawings for boosters as prizes each round and I was lucky enough to win one (in the 5th round, when I got a bye…)

After the Tournament there was some discussion about why there were so few people there. Now I only heard this second hand and cannot verify it, but my understanding of the situation was that the “Edmonton crew” is a much more casual group. They didn’t feel like, for whatever reason, in playing in a ‘competitive’ environment.
The numbers are as follows: 7 Calgary players, 2 Edmonton players, 1 Red Deer player (kestrel.ca) (1/2 way between Calgary and Edmonton), and one other person from out of town (Justin Johnson) (if this is incorrect please let me know). Personally I would prefer the qualifiers to be Calgary (or Okotoks! – they got the pre-release for WotDQ) next year as we have a more developed and competitive local scene…

So onto my warband.
I had been agonizing for some time now about what warband to bring. I had been practicing with my greenskull champions warband (Skullsplitter 4xdoogie champs, green dragon, Blue, TW) but had limited success with them. I finally settled on Dual War Trolls. I looked around at several builds but felt that Urthok versions were the strongest, mostly due to moral saves. The build I took I feel is the strongest build for a dual war troll band in the current meta. I chose the Tomb of Queen P because it had nice long lines of sight and a central beater area. No pits if I ran into a Raksasha, no forest for a marut to hide in.

The problem was practice! I needed practice and I had only settled on the warband 2 days before! Well Friday night George called me up and asked me if I could help him pick-up a couple of Death Slaad’s he was borrowing from a friend. At the last local tournament Terry and I were discussing them and George was very interested in the build. After going and reading up on them he figured that was the way to go. As George has a tendency to lead with his commanders (and get them squished – like his Dark Naga in a beholder band, or his brass sam in a dual AoK band) I figured that would be a good choice for him.

So I drove George over to pick up the Death Slaads (2 – he already had 1). We went back to my place to play. The build I saw had one TW and two Orc Warriors. I felt that 2 Hyena’s and 1 Orc Warrior was a better build (2x tile grabbers) and suggested it to him, so he went with it. I beat him both times. I think he still needs a bit more practice with the warband,

It would be very unlikely for unlikely events not to occur.
