That's what im talking about... undefeated at that [:)]
I wonder how many times he got his map? That is a huge factor with the archmage | | PS. This is what the alphabet would look like if Q and R were removed

| Frost-Bitten: In the Semifinal Terry was forced onto the Dragon Shrine, where I made sure to keep someone camped on the Acid Blessing the whole time. He won by 3 points (101-98).
Memphisto: The Fiendish Dire Weasel earned his points multiple times. Speed 8, +6 attack for 5 damage plus the Blood Drain, Cold Resist 5, Fire Resist 5, Spell Resistance, AC 16...all for 8 points. So what if he "Can't Rally" -- neither can the Timber Wolf, and they both take morale chacks after losing 10 hit points.
FDW highlights include routing Aramil in Ryan's GAS band before he could nerf anybody, routing the Healer in Jason's Iron Golem/CoDA band so she was never a factor (even though she rallied), getting a lot of tile points in different matches after my Wolf went bye-bye, and by positioning forcing some enemy spellcasters to rethink their tactics. | | Champion of Iconics & the Apparatus of Kwalish (Constructs with Drivers? Glad to see my favorite band take home a qualifier!!! Looks like in many matchups Kings Road was everyones map... I'm sure that helped.
I hope we get to see a tournament report!

| the tournament was a lot of fun and well run. I was a bit bummed with my results. I lost to Terry's Archmage band in a really close game due to one of my bodyguards being out of position. I lost to Josh Dartez again when I had a misplaced bodyguard and he took a crazy risk and it payed off. Josh gave me the biggest beating I have had ever taken (8 minute game!) Both losses were my positioning mistakes combined with their solid playing. I actually had the highest calculated tiebreakers going into the last round among the winners and thought I had it cinched for 4th place when the results of the 6th round played out. I was shocked to discover DCI reporter put Herb over me. The only way I can figure the math to work that way is if it gave him 100% opp. match wins for a bye. That shouldn't be the case. Herb's a great guy and deserved top 4 so it wasn't a major issue. I was just hoping I could avoid having to go to Chicago next weekend. Maybe next time I can just make less mistakes so I won't have to depend on DCI reporter to work right.
I wanted to congradulate Terry on his win. I watched him play his archmage band and it was an amazing sight! Taking out 3 frenzieds + rikka on the teleport map! Holy Crap! That band is really solid and he's an amazing player with it. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! I sat down with the match up sheets and the final results and worked this out. The DCI reporter didn't give him 100% match win for the bye. It didn't use the bye as part of the calculations. The average win % of the 5 players he played against was 66.6%. So, in a sense, the bye player had a 66.6% (because that was the average of his other matches).

Says you! The more the merrier. I want to see 70+ people there, and while I hope it goes smoothly, in the dark part of my heart, I hope Pasttimes screws up enough that we can stop going to events there at Yuck-Gi-Eww Central. | Sirohk here.
Just got back from Pittsburgh.
I'll write up full report later, but here's some highlights.
Actually, I finished 5-2. I lost to Jushua in the final 4 round. But all in all a very good day for me. [:)]
Most importantly, I met a lot of the Maxmini's folks and it was a pleasure meeting everyone. [^]ΖD][:D]
Likewise, Phantom of the Attic ran a top notch Qualifier event. [^][^][^]
I played Terry in my 3rd game on the Dungeon of Blood. Unfortunately, we only got to play 2 rounds and I lost to him 46-33 on points. We both spent a lot of time working through moves and what each others warbands could do as both of us were somewhat unfamliar with our opponents mini's. As a result time went very quickly in our match. I wanted the match to go on as I had just based his AM when time sounded. I was a little disappointed as I thought we had more time to at least get in a 3rd round. But alas that's the nature of the game and Terry won our match. Terry and I did play out the 3rd round for fun, I won initiative, hit his Archmage who then failed his MC and routed off the board. Oh what could have been. [:(]
Terry is a great player and he really knows how to make that Archmage warband run. Congrats to you Terry and I'm glad to hear you won (it looked like so when I left). Hope to see at GenCon. [^][)]
Cheers.

I fully agree with that statement. I received a bye in the second Swiss round, and went 3-2 the rest of the way -- and every time it seemed I had the tiebreak lead. I lost in the sixth round against Matt Noble's LE band, but before that I kept getting paired with a player unbeaten to that point (Jason Yeung in round three, Ryan Dodich in round four, and Matt in round six).
By all rights I shouldn't have gotten in over other 4-2 players, especially Brad. | | Champion of Iconics & the Apparatus of Kwalish (Constructs with Drivers? Brilliant!) Dungeons of Dread Called Shot: Yeah, right | |

When we had our match in round 6 I was not undefeated anymore, I was 4-1 at that point. I believe you were 4-1 at that point also?
That aside, I'm not sure how the ranking system worked. [?]
Just my $0.02 worth.
By the way, grerat game Herb! I really enjoyed our LE vs LE battle. [^]

| I was thinking about it, and SYB was right. The tiebreaks went the way they did because of the records of the people who played me.
Round One -- lost to Terry/Neidhart (6-0, eventual winner). Archmage band on King's Road...what's an LE beater band to do? I tried, and at least made it respectable, but when his Graycloak, a Xen'drik and frickin' DEVIS all nade their morale checks just before time ran out that was that. Another round and my HBG was toast (+ he'd already Banished a Zakya). Anyway, his son Ryan got the first round bye, which is significant later...
Round Two -- Bye (practiced against my version of an Umber Hulk band, expecting to face it later...but I don't).
Round Three -- because the only opponent I'd faced to that point was 2-0, and there was an odd number of other 2-0 players, one undefeated player was paired down to face me (technically 1-1...but the OTHER 1-1 players could not have an opponent win percentage of over .750...it's mathematically impossible). Result: I beat Jason's Iron Golem band (by systematically wrecking the Golem, which shocked and surprised Jason 'cos his first two opponents tried to assassinate his CoDA).
Round Four -- I'm 2-1 and there's still an odd number of undefeated 3-0 players (only three by then, IIRC). The two players I've faced have a combined record of 5-1 (.833), whereas the other 2-1 players cannot have an opponent's combined record higher than 7-2 (.778). Not saying it's fair, but it's how it worked. So, I'm paired with the "lowest" 3-0, who happens to be Ryan (who got the Round One bye...weird, huh?). I win again against his GAS band, but it's a street fight-mad scrum in the Sacred Circle by the Dragon Shrine exit...Ryan's getting better every time I face him.
Round Five -- Finally I'm not paired with an undefeated player because I've already faced Terry. I expect to play BShugg, but get another player from my local group, Jeff Alcorn. I'm 3-1 with opponents' combined record of (I think) 10-2 (.833); Jeff is also 3-1 and his opponents at best have a record of 13-3 (.812). Anyway, a tough match, on the Hellspike...his Half-Ogre stood his ground for a long time against both DCs and a Zakya, but Rikka ran, Kord never really got into the action (the Crow Shaman was putting Snake's Swiftness on the Half-Ogre!), and eventually I was able to wear him down until all he had left was Kord, the Marshal and a tile point deficit.
Round Six -- Instead of pairing me down, I'm put up against Matt (he's 4-1, I'm 4-1 w/ the bye). This is a nail-biter of a chess match on the Dungeon of Blood, but he was wearing me down and would have eventually killed everything unless I got very lucky on his Blackguard. I had a tile point edge, but I only took out his fodder so he won on points. Tough tough match.
So... while I still don't think a bye should have benefited me so much, at least I understand why it happened that way. | | Champion of Iconics & the Apparatus of Kwalish (Constructs with Drivers? Brilliant!) Dungeons of Dread Called Shot: Yeah, right | |

Everyone was nice (wish it were more like that around here in cleveland). Congrats to Terry. I'd have liked to have gotten to battle him. The Archmage seems like it would be a hard piece to use in a 200 warband!! Definatly got a new perspective of warbands...gotta revamp mine. Holly, it was good to have met ya... Keep up the good work (defeating your boyfriend) & continue trying different things and see what you like to play? I know you had a LG warband - but dont remember the specs? Please post your warband in another thread and ask for some assistance under the "Skirmish" discussions... You will get alot of response. | Nice to see Archmage showing again... I played nearly Neidhart's warband about 6-8 months ago as a tester on Vassal and thought it did OK, but there wasn't a good map at that point - King's Road is the definite choice...
Surprised my friend Joe didn't do better - must have been "one of those days" - when warband got screwed, misread metagame, bad matchups and dice failed... I know he's much better than 1-3 (having played him twice). | | One of these days WoTC will update their tournament page when I'm in the top 5... they never seem to do when I'm in that bracket :( My Collection My DDM Website And My Trade Refs Be a part of the UK DDM Forum

Unless the DCI software was doing something wierd, it's just random luck that you were the one who got paired up twice in a row.
I would cut'n paste the relevant rule from the DCI pages, but it's a pdf, so doesn't want to be copied so easily.
Regardless, here's the short version:
From the DCI page, in the "For Organizers" subsection, there's a resource link entitled "Swiss pairings system".
Rule #3 therein states to pair players with the same record randomly. Then in underline (and this is an exact quote): Do not use tiebreaks when pairing between rounds.

Holly - Great meeting ya too. [:D] Keep up the good work playing DDM. [)]
I'll post a report later today. If you get a chance, check it out as I'll point out a few tips that will help you with your game / warband. One tip that someone (everyone here from Maxmini's) once told me is too practice, practice, practice. [^]

| | In regards to the bye affecting tiebreaks, it doesn't I don't think. The tiebreaker is opponent win percentage, in his bye, he had no opponent so his opponent win % is gonna be the average of his five opponents, ignoring the bye round. | |

| Right.
But as I was saying, for a third-round matchup I was technically 1-1, but my single live opponent was 2-0 -- whereas the other 1-1 players had faced two live opponents whose combined record could not be better than 3-1 (with the loss being to the 1-1 player).
But if Dagni says that's not the reason I was paired against unbeaten players twice in a row, I'll trust him.
I'm still planning on coming to Illinois, with the only difference being that the pressure's off and I can concentrate on having fun. | | Champion of Iconics & the Apparatus of Kwalish (Constructs with Drivers? Brilliant!) Dungeons of Dread Called Shot: Yeah, right | |

Wait...you had a warband?[)]
Kidding!
Basically, I'd say your warband lacks focus. The Justicator's a great piece, and the Cleric of Lathander is a very good Commander in a metagame heavy with Sacred Watchers. I'd keep those for sure.
Without the Young Master, a Gith Monk by himself gets one guaranteed hit and then is at +9/+9 the rest of the game -- not enough to reliably hit anything but CG/CE pieces and fodder. However, he's fast and has a super AC.
The Village Priest is redundant in this band, since the CoL has a higher Commander rating and can cast Magic Weapon multiple times. He helps the Caravan Guards, but devoting a 21-point commander to benefit 10 points of fodder isn't efficient.
I like the Dragon Samurai, but 60 points is a lot to spend for a Speed 4 beater. Points are better spent on a second Justicator (with 12 left over for something else).
Here are a couple directions you can go, depending on which Commander you want to keep:
27 - Cleric of Lathander 96 - Justicator x 2 34 - Githzerai Monk 21 - Dwarf Artificer (beef up the ACs and use GMW on the Gith to make him +11/+11) 08 - Warforged Scout (early Tile points) 05 - Timber Wolf (secondary Tile points, flanking and harassing) 09 - Celestial Dire Badger (eats enemy Wolves for breakfast, and no one expects it)
200 points/8 activations
OR
21 - Village Priest 96 - Justicator x 2 64 - Warforged Bodyguard x 2 09 - Arcanix Guard 10 - Caravan Guard x 2
200 points/8 activations (goal here is simple: Keep the Priest alive!)

| The Good - Met lots of nice people. The folks from Cleaveland were fun to meet, coming to their first DCI event.
The Bad - Everything else.

To anyone who says that "dice don't usually determine the outcome" or "if you're blaming dice, you aren't learning", I have a kick in the junk for you. Line up.
I'm joking, you don't have to line up.
---
Game 1 I felt like I outplayed my opponent, getting large swaths of his warband in ally targeted Chaos Hammers and even using Countersong to pull off a Fire Cone in spite of his Couatl.
After round 3, I was winning in spite of: - Not rolling higher than a 10, I don't think once.
I was in the lead and in position to win the game. I'm swinging at Rikka, who is not in the forest, with a Red Sam who is. I have intimidate beat on.
I need a 2 or higher, then a 6 or higher. If she then rolls a 17 or lower, I win.
That's a 64+% chance for the math enthusiasts, and I think most players would take it. Getting both hits is 71%, so, even if she makes morale, one more hit kills her.
I roll my 3rd ONE of the day. At this point, it's only three 1s to one 20. But it will get far worse.
I'm still in the match. If Kord misses my forested Slaad just once, I probably win. I rout Rikka to the edge of the board, and, when she leaves, we're to be tied at 183 or so. I'm closer to the center.
After my opponent takes 3 minutes to move Kord after hearing "3 minutes to play" the judge awards an extra round.
Again, I win the game if Kord finally rolls a 7 or lower. (hyena can move to the center) I also win if I win initiative and my Slaad goes to 35 HP.
I lose initiative, and Kord hits for at least the 5th time on a forested Slaad.
There is a 7% chance that Kord would not miss a Forested DS out of 5 chances, and a 4% chance that he would not miss out of 6 chances.
Game 2 I play a talented player who is running a spoiler CoDA + Stone Golem band. His goal is to kill about 70 points and have the Golem parked on points when his commander dies. We both know this.
I play fairly well, so does he.
I'm still rolling poorly, missing MaA 4 consecutive attacks with a DMP and missing a MaA with a Red Samuria... all consecutive.
I offer him a shot to attack my DS, hoping to lure the SG off scoring, since I'm in the lead.
He takes the bait, knowing it was bait, and tries for a banishment/dismissal with his CoDA. I had Resistance drumbeat on, so, this put me in a position to have a 75% chance to make the save, kill his commander while the SG was out of position, and win.
I fail the save and now I'm behind on points. He loses every other unit and rides the SG out to a win.
At least he played well and had the balls to bring an odd band.
Game 3 (round 4) I'm playing Mike Strauss, who I've beaten in every other previous matchup (3-0). Mike is 1-2, and so am I, thanks to an unlucky BYE that would prevent me from even making top 8 if I win out.
My bad luck continues at the start of the match, not that I care much at this point.
Mike was only 1-2 because he, and the guy who finished 2nd, didn't realize that his Zakya's were immune to Confusion as it was a gaze attack and they have blind fight.
So Mike loses a close one to BShugg, and loses a game he should have won to the #2 guy (both realized it after the game, but, what can you do?)
Anyway, midway through the match, my luck turns to the point where I start getting about 50-50 good and bad rolls instead of 90-10 bad.
I mount a comeback.
My Hyena, in spite of being boosted by WD, fails a stun save.
I un-stun the hyena, he's attacked, and he routes to the point where he's still on the board, but just by one square.
They call time.
I'm winning 203 to 200, but Mike is sure that I didn't activate my hyena. I'm sure that I did. Mike's a nice guy, and he has a chance to make the top 8.
I think I could make a case to the judge that I did activate my hyena, but he didn't "move" because I'd "unstunned" him.
But I am completely depressed and angry to the point where I just don't care... and at least Mike can pull a good finish in spite of losing a game he should have won if he'd remembered about Blindfight vs Gaze.
I concede the game/debate and lose 204 to 203.
---
The way the day worked out, it looks like the local guys didn't do well and, once the regular players from out of town came in, they showed us up.
Someone reading this would likely think, "oh, you have to be exaggerating".
By the end of the day, I had counted 11 natural "1s" and 1 natural "20" for me. But if the rest of the rolls had been better, I would have won more games in spite of ELEVEN 1s.
So, it's two days later. I'm still pretty frustrated.
I expected to go and maybe get outplayed due to lack of practice because of a ton of other bits of bad luck in my actual life (replacing roof, other major repairs, etc). I think I'd be happier to lose if I actually felt like I was making mistakes, getting outplayed, or forced to take low % chances.
Taking high % chances and failing them all is not, in any way, enjoyable.
I think the guys in games 2 & 3 played good games, although I had a big advantage in game 2 if I make my 75% chance not to get dismissed.
During my BYE, I was watching a tight game between BShugg and another good player.
It came down to the final round, high % chance for BShugg to win, but he could have lost. Shugg won.
However, the opponent has been swinging at BShugg's Sword Archon with his CE boosted Helmed HOrror
The guy COULD have based BShugg's healer by landing at the back corner of the SA... he still would have had flanking with one of the Duergar on the other corner of the SA.
Instead of making low % 2nd attacks on the SA with the HH, he could have applied the damage to the WFB by attacking the healer.
The healer could NOT have absorbed those shots, so the damage would always be transferred. The healer could have moved, taking an AoO, so that it couldn't take 40 near guaranteed damage a round, but, that still an extra 20 damage against BShugg, and the healer now can't base both WFB. If the healer moves, the AoO is like 20 free damage, and the LE band is in the same position it took originally (attacking SA), but it's got an EXTRA 25 damage under it's belt.
In other words, instead of coming down to needing a lucky initiative and a few lucky hits, BShugg's SA could have been down an extra 20 points (dead), and the game won. The SA had DR, and was only taking 15 on a successful hit to transfer to the WFB.
So here it is, these guys are top level players, both playing well, and there was clearly an opportunity for the opponent to win.
I didn't feel like I'd passed up on anything like that for myself, yet I didn't win a single game, and it frustrates the hell out of me, especially as the good local players felt like we could go in there and prove something.
I've had bad luck before, but never for a continuous TWO AND A HALF GAMES. My average roll couldn't have been higher than a 6 or 7 over that span.
So that's the Qualifier from another perspective. I wish I could have come out of it learning something that I would have done differently, but even asking my opponents after the matches, the one suggestion I got would have required me to have used 3 activations instead of 2 activations. Not much of a help? Heh.
The only silver lining is that the people were, for the most part, very cool and fun to talk to.
I can't even imagine what the actual chances are of continually having such bad rolls. It has to be nearly statisticly impossible.
Feel free to think I'm exaggerating. It'd be better if it wasn't true.
Any desire I had to Qualify or go to Gen Con is gone. Luck that bad can't be accidental, it has to be some kind of cosmic sign. It's a sign that I need to stay home, get all the damn repairs to my house done, and if I go on a vacation, I'll just take my wife somewhere.
On the bright side, I am thankful that I am not dying of a terminal illness. (that I know of)

What you probably missed earlier in the game was that the healer was basically unreachable by the helmed horror with out giving up a turn of actions with it. I had his Zakya down on HP before it had a chance to act, and that forced his other guys to have to commit to the fight where I wanted. Sure if the Horror was in a better position it could of been landing the attacks on the healer. Instead It was based by the Archon, bodyguard and a Sacred watcher before the healer moved into the position it was in. He could of moved and risked AoO's but I don't think he could of afforded 30, 45 or even 60 damage on his HH to do so. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! He committed the Zakya too soon. But I distinctly remember having to bite my tongue when he moved the Horror.
He moved it from behind the Zakya 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and then 1 diagonal and forward... behind the Sword Archon to set up a flank. He chose the flank over basing the healer.
When he did that, I was already having a nearly statisticly impossible day of bad luck, I remember almost ASKING during the game, why he didn't base the healer, which was nestled into place. I actually bit my cheek.
I know he shouldn't have risked an AoO or his second attack to base the healer. There was, to the best of my memory and sore cheek, one activation window of opportunity, where he COULD have based the healer and still moved the Rakshasa up to get within 6".
You're saying that the healer was still not in position when he made that move, but, if that were true, the healer would not have been based by a bodyguard at that time, and the healer was within basing distance, because you were moving your forces up sort of slowly on the side close to you. I can see it in my mind, because I was thinking to myself, "Even if this day is complete statistical garbage for me, I can still go watch the guys play at table 1 and see if I can pick up any tricks."
So I just remember it as one of the only positives of the whole tournament (for me), that he could have based the healer, WFB, and SA at the same time, on the back corner of the SA, and instead, chose to flank you. I was screaming at that move in my head when he made it.
Even in the alternate situation, so much of the game depended on the healer, that if he'd caught her out by herself with a double move, he could have then routed her in one hit, or forced you to divert a WFB, or forced you to divert everything and focus on his horror. | | Completed good trades with Demagogue, PigSnot, DoB, and Alepulp.
