We had an Epic tourny this past Saturday at Warlords Unlimited in Richmond, KY. I played around with a few ideas and as per normal I let my love for the Beholder really show in Epic play. The army I've been playing is now 7-0 in Epic play and I'll admit that part of that is due to the dice going my way on some rolls. My army was:

Behold Hextor
Beholder x 3
Dark Naga
Human Blackguard
Aspect of Hextor x 2 (non-epic)
Wolf Skeleton
on Tomb of Queen Perigne

Basic idea is to run both AOH out and then let the Beholders come in as backup and wear down things with the eye rays. The AOH work well for this as they've got enough hp to stay around for a few rounds and with the HBG they are basically fearless. Beholders are always iffy to run as they are high variance and always depend upon your dice rolls. I've ran Beholders for along time and feel that I have mastered them. To anyone who differs, ask the locals and I'm sure they'll share their hate for Beholders, which I'm proud to say I'm to blame for.

Round 1
I play our FLGS owner Keith. Keith is running a King Snure, 2 War Troll (1 Epic and 1 non-epic), Skeletal Legionaire, Gauth, and Terror Wight on Field of Ruin. He wins map init and we play on his map. First 2 rounds are spent positioning with him using the central area for blocking to keep my Beholders out of LOS of him. Third round we get it on and I am able to get my Beholders to see through the central victory area. During I think this round I start to wear down 1 War Troll and turn the other one to Stone. I believe I got the non epic stoned. He takes a gamble and runs Snurre up on the other side hoping to kill the Naga. Only problem is he's now fully exposed to my other 2 Beholders who have not activated yet. A disentegrate and 3 inflict wounds later, Snurre failed a morale check and ran, but wasn't off the board. Next round the AOHs finish off the War Troll they were fighting. His Gauth managed to get in a lucky LOS and paralyzed 1 of my Beholders. I activate it and manage to unparalyze it. He had moved up his Skeletal Legionaire hoping to use it as some Beholder bane. I moved the HBG over and killed it. After that Snurre rallied but he conceded since I still had my entire army vs his 1/2 Snurre.

2nd Round
I played Ragnarok who is playing a great army. I really like Mike's army and this is a rematch of the last time we played Epic. Mike and I played in the finals of that tourny and it was very close. Mike's army is Epic Justicator, Epic Rikka, non-epic Aspect of Moradin, Mailee, Aramil, Couatl, Eberk, and Dwarf Artificer. We roll for map and I get it so I take my map. First round I use my activation control on him to use the Beholders last and get some shots off on the Justicator to get him for about 30 points with some inflict wounds. Second round he Waylays in Rikka right next to my entire warband and moves on the HBG, hitting him for 30. The rest of his army is too far away to move and attack so they end up moving down to within striking distance next round. This round though I had both AOH and all 3 Beholders on Rikka. I got lucky with a few disentegrates and some bad rolls on Mike's part and by the end of the round she was at 10hps. Next round I managed to finish off Rikka and get the Justicator down to 10hps. Round after that I finish off the Justicator and either get the AOM down to no hps or possibly turn him to stone. After that round we called it game though.

3rd Round
Once again this band made it to the finals. I get paired up against William. William is a local who's young (not yet in high school), but is a quick learner. He's learned alot from us in the short amount of time he's been playing and is now actually able to give us a run for our money. Given the amount of talent in Richmond, that's saying quite a bit. He was running a Huge Gold Dragon, Trumpet Archon, Warpriest of Moradin, Dwarf Artificer, Timber Wolf x 2. His strategy was to bring the Dragon over and block you into your starting area on the first turn. Second turn he would breath on your army and then sound the Trumpet's peel and try to get you to route. I knew this so I prepared for it. I told him before we started that his dragon would make a pretty statue. First turn he brought over the dragon and I got some shots in on it with the Beholders, knocking it down by 50 points or so. Second round starts and I win init. I have my Beholders so that if they fail their checks, only 1 can get off the board. The one that can get off the board I use and fire 2 times on the HGD. One is an inflict and the other is a low roll that lets me slide it back so it's based by an AOH. He then goes and breathes with the dragon. I make all my saves except on 1 Beholder who can see the HBG and makes his morale. He sounds the trumpet and I make all my saves. I then unleash the fury of the Beholders on him and get off 2 rolls that are high enough to be flesh to stone. He makes the first one and the second one he rolls a 1 on. Big Golden Statue. He wants to still play it out though so he brings up the Archon and goes after the HBG. I base it with both AOH. He starts to bring up his Artificer and WOM. I get some shots off onto the Artificer and after 3 inflicts he's dead. I then start on the WOM and get off 1 inflict on him. Next round he attacks the HBG. I am then able to unleash the AOH's on him and between that and some good Beholder inflicts I take care of the Trumpet Archon. After that it's short work of the Warpriest and that's game.

Final record has me 3-0 and down as the winner. We drafted 2 boosters of Wardrums for prizes and I picked a War Troll. William came in 2nd and picked an Ogre War Hulk.
