| G. Mark Abernathey (Lord Raven) 4-2 **Proud Member of Team Amish** "Brady Bunch", FB x3, Rikka, Xeph Warrior x3, Elf Warrior Teleport Temple
So 2 weeks after KY - where I finished 3-3 with the "Brady Bunch" too many failed Conceal rolls - I had been very open to a new band... I playtested alot of stuff and after seeing how many Marut/Couatl bands + variants, had been winning I felt like it was more important to out guess what may show at Pittsburgh PA.
I looked at 3x HH's again - NOST 2 - SWarm - Death "Salads" and such... Not remotly hitting on anything I really liked - Friday morning I tried Marut/Couatl/Kord on Kings Road! But alas I rolled like crap and got frustrated... So on the way up to PA, Josh (another member of "Team Amish") and I talked about a band that may have a chance - {i'm still upset about all the many failed Conceal rolls I missed @ KY} So the base was 3x HH's, Zak Rak, DMM, Timberwolf, Blue and Dire Rat... this build is important later.
I get to PA after a 6 hour drive Friday - crash that night and we are ready to go Saturday morning. I get there and have no idea what band I am going to run? My car is full of Mini's and Warband's of every flavor... I grab the box with 2 warbands in it (the new 3x HH's & Zak Rak band + Brady Bunch)
Josh and I go in and meet alot of players - old and new - the place is filling up and I can't decide what to play... finally BShugg shows up and I get him outside 10 min. before the start - and I explain the situation - what warbands I have and what I should play? He felt like Brady Bunch had the higher risk but the bigger reward... and HH's may not do too well if alot of Marut/Couatl's are here! So he said "run the Brady Bunch! So with a boost of confidence I signed up my signature Warband...
Let the rounds begin - FIGHT!
1. Dave Campeau - finished 4-2 Cleric of Corellon, TW, Mialee, Wemic x2, Crow Shaman x2, Ialdabode Teleport Temple
Since we both had the same board - no brainer - we rolled for side and I won, side "A" bottom left side. I was kinda worried about the amount of damage his band could deliver... So I pick my targets in order (Commander and Crows then the beaters) Round 1 - we both get tile Round 2 - I killed his TW Ilabode and Crow Shaman and had his Commander Routing off. Round 3 - I dropped his Wemic based his other Crow and killed Mialee. Round 4 - I killed his other Wemic that was game.
1-0
2. Ryan Dodich - finished 3-3 (Terry's Son!!) "Gas", Gith Monk x4, Young Master, Jozan, Aramil, M@A Dragon Shrine - I won map and we played on Teleport - he chose side B top Right. This is the one band I knew could destroy me! Why did I have to draw it? Round 1 - we both get tiles... Round 2 - Rikka kills Aramil (this is a critical move in my head because Aramil can Nerf the FB's so they don't cause a check in one swing... not a good thing) He uses his Gith's to MC Rikka and she Fails. No suprise. although she did pass her Stun! Go figure. I fill the gap with a FB and MC a Gith - who also fails and runs off... Looks good for me! Then I had 2 other FB's base and swing on YM. One of them rolls a 1 and looks dumb. His Monk's move around and stun each of my FB's and all 3 failed their check... Round 3 - If I had won init... a really diffent ending. Alas no he wins and kills 2 FB's. No Deathstrikes!! I killed his YM but it was too late - the final FB fails her stun again - falls and I conceed.
1-1
3. Terry Chauvin - finished 4-2 Kord, Couatl, CoDA, Arcanix Guard, Rikka, TW, M@A King's Road - this time he wins map & side with +7 init! Again a very powerful band that can squash me quick! Round 1 - I'm able to get 1st round tile and deny his. Round 2 - I killed his Rikka - he Kills mine. I also got his TW and M@A. Round 3 - The Guard drops and I make the Key move in the game! I had based and MC his Couatl with a FB - it made it's check - He moves it into the woods and brings the CoDA forward to heal it back to full!! Now I'm pissed! That CoDA is trouble. As bad as I want to hit the Kord and make it check (lvl 17)- or dbl swing the Couatl (AC 26 now) and try and get it off the board... I decide to try and Route the CoDA I take the AOO from Couatl 10 pts - and base the CoDA swing - hit and MC @ -2 from Aura of fear. lvl 8 + cmd 7 -2 = 13 - 7 or better... He rolled a 1!!! I felt bad for cheering but it was a calculated risk that totally paid off! I lost another FB when I Deathstriked Kord but the remaining FB was darn near at full when I based and killed the Couatl...
2-1
4. Jason Kean (millygoat) - finished 2-3 Marut, Couatl, Arcane Ballista, CoY, Jozan, Aramil, TW King's Road - He got map, I got side but passed to him... didn't want him to get 1st round LOS to me with that big sucker!! I was already late getting upstairs and that had upset Jason... He felt I took too long setting up too - I knew that FB's don't go many rounds - and said we have plenty of time. By round 4 rounds I said someone will have won. (I was right but he was still upset with me) Round 1 - we both get tiles - but Rikka has Based his Couatl Round 2 - I win init and Swing on Couatl and drop 20 magic on it's head! I take an FB and base and swing on Aramil - Splat! He killed a Xeph Warrior of mine, then Couatl swings and tries to leave combat - Rikka hits on the AOO and Splat! Couatl fails and runs off. Round 3 - I kill Jozan and put some FB lovin on the Marut - 3 FB's basing it. The Ballista clobbers Rikka and she dies. Round 4 - Marut drops and his final spellcaster CoY is based by an FB - 1 space away from the Ballista - He Conceeded!! (we had 20 min left in the round at that point)
3-1
5. Jim Matlaboni finished 2-4 HH x3, Zakya, DMM, TW x2, Dire Rat (remember the band Josh and I were talking about playing - this is only one piece different) Mithral Mines - I won map and we played on my Teleport. Round 1 - he gets tile - I can't. Round 2 - I kill one of his TW's and get tile - he gets my Elf Warrior Round 3 - I am able to drop a HH & Rat but lose one of the FB's Round 4 - I drop another HH and the Zak Rak - he gets my 2nd FB... Rikka is down 30 pts @ the end of this round and the FB is down 55!! His final HH is down 30 already... I had 2 choices either heal the FB 20 from Rikka or fly over and hit for 20 and give that flank I need... I fly over without healing first and swing on the HH and hit! Round 5 - This is new territory for me with the girls - they don't like long games... He wins init! Not good for me - The HH drops the FB to 85 pts! If Rikka leaves base combat to try and heal - she could take 15 and moral check then fail and run or just swing and hope the deathstrike hits... Rikka hits and FB DS hits! BUT... This puts us both over 200 pts at the same time. We call for the judge and BShugg to oversee this. After much research the rule we found in the DCI book says the one with the most points over 200 wins... Which was me by only a few pts. Jim and I both agreed this was the way to get bumped from a Qualifier - in a super close match!
GREAT GAME JIM!! Good sport as well!
4-1
6. Terry Dodich (Neidhart) finished 8-0 Archmage, IM, Xendrick Champ x2, GCR, Wolf, Xeph x2, Devis King's Road - I finally get to play this band and I won my map Teleport he chose side and took lower left. In all the fuss about needing this win, I lost focus during setup and placed Rikka in a horrible spot... I Forgot he had BANISH! Round 1 - He won and dbl moved, quick cast & Banished Rikka right off the map. I felt horrible. Then he had the Xen'Drick champs shoot off one Xeph warrior too. My game was going down fast. He got tiles I didn't. Round 2 - I get is Xeph and Tiles - and made a move that allowed me to charge the Archmage I hit for 30 but he ported off and ran away to hide deep in his start spot. Guarded by two Xen'dricks. Round 3 - Meanwhile I killed Devis, his Commander and wolf. Round 4 - And takes both of his Xen'dricks and bases my FB's or something like that? This part got fuzzy. I remember taking a deathstrike on on and missing his AC! Then the other is based and swings to MC and kill that one from a deathstrike. Round 5 - The game of Cat and Mouse is all over the place. I was based up on his xeph in tile position when I noticed the Archmage was not on a teleport. I left the xeph and took the aoo to go base the mage. My almost full FB is now dancing with his Archmage who was already down 30 from one big smack and a second would be the MC I need to possibly remove it from the game! Round 6 - He wins init. and moves the Archmage away from the FB - Terry said "If you hit you win if not I win" Everyone is watching as the FB swings and HITS!! Conceal 6 - the bane of my warband... I rolled a 4... so depressing. It was 188 Terry and 114 Me - 98pts would have won it. From this point on I go kill the xeph and he moves to tile points and wins.
Well Played Terry!! Great Match... Losing Rikka first turn killed me.
4-2 and my tiebreakers put me in 6th place next to BShugg and SYB... I have Maryland this Saturday :shruggs: maybe there I can make top 4.
Jeff's shop was fantastic! Can't wait to visit it next time i'm up there. Well run Qualifier - very organized!!
Congrats to Josh a fine member of Team Amish for his wonderful 2nd Place finish with the Umberhulk! Who says CE is dead...

| | Dude that is rough. Maybe you should get an Aasimar Favored Soul into your band so you can ignore conceal checks. I really want you to qualify. | Hi Mark, I just have a quick question. How important do you think Rikka ended up being? I noticed in your reports that she killed Aramil once, but I didn't see much else about her overall contribution to the band.
Anyway... just wondering. --sam | | I'm in Urbana, IL | |

Good point Sam, I just didn't list her kills. She is amazing! Every game she is the key piece that breaks the game open for me! I usually can base and kill or check something on round one...
Match 1 - Rikka based his commander - the aoo routed it... Match 2 - Rikka killed the Aramil - then died ;-( Match 3 - Rikka deny's his first round TP and then based the Couatl - Kord hit on the 2nd round and MC her - she fled. Match 4 - A close match was vs the marut/couatl/ballista - Rikka dbl moved and based the couatl - hit on round 2 and the aoo from the couatl caused it to check and run off - before it did anything! She then died to the Ballista. Match 5 - Rikka was all over his commander and setup flanks for FB's prob should have healed that game to prevent the loss of the final FB but she was still alive and gave me the win on points! Match 6 - Rikka died on first trun Banish - that sucked... May have won if not for that?
Kentucky was very similar - she gets deep in the backfield and kicks butt! I really like that piece! Thanks Kiddoc! | | Winter Fantasy, Wardrums Pre-release Champion
