Lisle, Illinois

06/11/2006 6:37 PM
just got back from niles, I had to get home and
left after 4 rounds.

There were 48 participants, so 7 rounds of swiss.

I know no records so sorry 'bout that.

there was a variety of warbands as well as a spectrum
of talent present in the tournament. There were over
1/2 of the attendees from out of town including
Minn, MI, WI, IN and more.

Lots of Couatls (though I saw none)
I think 5 Aspect of Moradin (a couple with IG's)
Monks
Dual/tripple helmed horrors
quad CE beaters
Triple Death Slaads
A balor even
And some silly person decided to try to play a
Cleric of Kord band to combat LG, Me He ended up
playing against no LG.

I am sure some folks will have individual tourney reports,
i saw a lot of people taking notes.

Just got home myself...

No report as of now...

but top 4 were (don't know all handles so names will haveta do):

Brad Shugg
Ricardo Boronat
Dave (vreckmnidj) <_ sorry forgot his last name already
John Siadek (sp?)

As for bands: two GAS, Two kord/body/coda

I finished 6th, 4th for the last 3 rounds and dropped to 6th on tiebreakers...

the last round was 6 5-1 players...the 3 winners advanced with Ricardo who was undefeated until round 5 and backed in after 7..;)

He beat me so i can say it...

Me, i played something slightly different...

Aspect of Kord, Cleric of Order, Couatl, Couatl, Eberk, adventurer, Timber wolf, human commoner, human commoner..on drow outpost

ok, it'll be a brief report..

Round 1: LE (dual helmed horrors with shuluth) played on his smoke map
Round 2: LG (marut, couatl and misc filler not cookie cutter) on outpost i think
Round 3: LG (Iron Golem, Aspect of Moradin, Cleric of Order, filler) on blood rock map
Round 4: LG (GAS) on Outpost (my first lose)
Round 5: LG ( Moradin, medic, gold dwarfs, artificer, eberk)
Round 6: LE (tri-helm horrors, rakshasha)
Round 7: LG (bodyguarded Kord - cookie cutter, I can call it that since there were 3 of them via'ing for top 4)

Thanks to everyone there, Dan for judging, Pastimes for hosting...

Woot. Good group of guys. Glad to see Ricardo in, he was my sole loss in a sealed event at Gencon last year and a great guy.

Congrats all.

John is ShivanDarkeyes, Brad Shugg is, obviously, BShugg. I dunno Ricardo's handle. Dave's last name is Paul.
Brad gave Dave the win for the first round of top 4, we left shortly thereafter.

I wound up 4-3 after a good many tough matchups and close games, a poor result after being named as many armies' "bad matchup". unfortunately, I only faced one such army.

John Siadak

I dropped at 4-2 to get a start on heading home, since my 2 losses were rounds 1 and 2, I had 0 chance of top 4, and only outside chance at top 8 (2 prize booster for 5-8th). Plus John was a local player until school got out, and he was my 2nd loss. I figured dropping at 4-2 was better for any tiebreakers then dropping to possibly 4-3.

5th thru 8th actually got 4 boosters each....plus the fire elemental promo as a bonus....all in all, i'm still disappointed that my two losses were whoopings....But, 6th of 48 isn't anything to sneeze at...

For 4 I may have stayed. I was told 2. That kinda sucks.

C'est la vie. My ride was getting impatient with his dice anyway.

I was 2nd in Swiss. At the beginning of the playoffs, Brad gave me the win so he could head home. After John Siadak won his match, he conceded to me and a bunch of us went to a local restaurant and talked minis and chess.

Alex took 7th, his two losses were his first match--to Newtoncain, and his seventh match--to bshugg.

So, whathca gonna do? I was praying that, when Alex and I were both 5-1, we'd get paired up so I could concede and give him the invite. But, alas, we didn't get paired in a tournament finally.

It was a long night, but it went well. The event was well judged (at least, from my point of view, and in the opinion of most that I talked to).

Of my wins, most of them were heartbreakers at the end. The matches were grueling and in some cases I really pulled a win when I'd been up against the ropes.

Kord was good for me, and, though I complain about there being too many Couatls, I just had to play one.

I'll post a report later.

Thanks all, for the great games, and thanks especially to Brad and John for their choosing to concede in the finals.

I was first in Swiss with the best tiebreakers (Getting paired up against undefeated players helps) beating 2 undefeateds back to back when I was at 1 loss.

I got my first loss to Jason Singerland round 1 and I 6-0'd it in a nerve-wracking but awesome qualifier. I can say that every person I played was very good, both at playing the game and a good sport.

I played against the GAS w/ Aramil mirror match in round 7 and then in the Semi-Finals beating it both times (got lucky what can I say).

It was late and I came to qualify and get a free pass to GenCon along with some boosters so I had no problem conceeding the final round since I wouldn't use the travel award anyway (dang taxes!). Vrecknidj seemed like he wanted it so I didn't mind giving up a few rating points since it was so late after 7 Swiss rounds, lunch break, and semi-finals.

Full report later here is what I played (pretty standard)

GAS
Young Master x1
Gith Monk x4
Aramil x1
Hill Dwarf Warrior x1
Man @ Arms x1 (I say BAH to human commoners)

I played on Dragon Shrine to make some of my really bad match-ups only moderately bad ones. (Helmed Horrors + Chraals)

The judging was great, the tournament venue was plenty large, and the TOs were knowledgeable and friendly. A+

48 Players I think Kord/Couatl was the most popular army of the weekend.

A big thanks to Kelly Gradert for dropping out at 4-2 to help my tiebreaks out, though it ended up not mattering the gesture was very generous and appreciated.

Thanks to everyone I talked to and played minis against I really had a blast and I can honestly say that everyone I hung out with at the qualifer really made the day less stressful and a great deal more fun thanks to everyone.

Awesome, huge congrats Bshugg and Shivan! Wonderful to see you both were so successful against such a huge crowd of talented minis players. Way to go!

Likewise, congrats to both the other qualifiers, Vrecknidj and Ricardo. I look forward to the chance to meet you at GenCon, Vrecknidj!

Congrats to all the qualifiers. Way to go Brad and Dave - hope to see you at GenCon!

Also great job Alex, in a field that size 7th place is very respectable.

It was a long day but a lot of fun. I was 6-1 going into the final 4 and conceeded to Dave. He had a great tournament and deserved to play off in the finals. I got the nice 2 hour head start back to Michigan. Made it back at 1 AM and had to be up for work at 6 AM.

Real quick, I wanted to comment on the caliber and class of my opponents. Everyone I faced did a great job and was very friendly. People who don't play in tournaments are really missing out on how much fun it is.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

Went 3-3, dropped after the 6th round of Swiss since it was time to head back to Michigan.

Since I'd already qualified in Pittsburgh, I decided to have a little fun:

Shuluth
Helmed Horror x 2
Flameskull
Dark Moon Monk
Dire Rat x 2
Goblin Skirmisher

Map: Broken Demongate

Without going in to detail of all the matches, this was a pretty good band but not one I'll take any further. The Flameskull was either worth his points (killing four fodder pieces w/ the fireball in one match, routing a Wand Expert off the board in another), or completely useless (*cough*Couatl*cough). For his part, Shuluth has to kill something to become truly effective, which also means he has to be close enough to be attacked...and you just can't expect the enemy to fail Stun & Disorienting Presence saves that often (particularly in the three matches I played against bands with Wardrummers).

I made some mistakes (forgetting Orc Champions have Cleave...twice), and I can't blame my dice for any of the losses (didn't miss a Morale save with Shuluth, for example). Overall, I had fun and it was great to see BShugg and Vrecknidj and some of the others.

By coincidence, my best friend of 24 years was in Illinois on family business, so we got together at the tournament. He had never played D&D Minis before, so I gave him the simplest-to-run band I could think of (dual HGBs, Tiefling, Wardrummer, Hyena), the Dragon Shrine map (for the well-placed magic circles and energy nerfs), a crash course in how to play, and set him loose.

Naturally I faced him in the first round. He lost, but the experience firmed up his knowledge of the rules enough that he went 2-3 the rest of the day (before dropping so we could have dinner at this very nice Vietnamese-Filipino restaurant nearby).

Just wanted to say what a great time my buddies and I had up in Niles (they unfortunately don't have internet access at the moment). We all had a good time and met some great people (and players [)] ). Hopefully in a year we can come back up and be a lil more competitive.

On a personal note, I whole heartedly apologize to Jason (i think) who recieved a loss due to a wrong call concerning paralysis and bodyguard.

This is the kind of story I love to see. Who knows whether he'll become a regular player, but, getting to play like this is a great introduction for a lot of people, and some of them will stick with it. Kudos to you for introducing him.

He's been a gamer as long as I've known him, and he played Mage Knight until it crashed & burned, so he wasn't a complete novice.

If there were more players in Philadelphia, it might be possible to get him involved. For now, though, this was likely a one-time thing.

But thanks for the kudos.
