| We had 13 or so for the event in Pittsburgh, at Mr. Nice Guy games. Thanks to our hosts there, the day was exciting and comfortable, and I think most of us had a blast.
I took first place, going 6-0, (largely due to pulling Tiamat). Of the 26 boosters, there were 4 Tiamats, and at least 1 Bahamut at the event. Here was my warband:
Aspect of Tiamat Cleric of Syreth Blackspawn Exterminator Kobold Dragonwrought Diseased Dire Rat (x2) Wererat Rogue Hunting Hyena
I also pulled a Slaughterstone Eviscerator, and vexed greviously over whether to use it (the regular version) with Tiamat. Ultimately, I knew that Bahamut would be my toughest match (and possibly another Tiamat), and that the eviscerator would be nearly-useless at only +10 Attack, so I went with the warband above, thinking these pieces would help me with a point-denial strategy. The 9 activations would also prove to help immensely in my toughest matches.
I went with King's road, thinking that the forest cover would help Tiamat's hit-and-run tactics made possible by her 2 activations. (that turned out to be an understatement).
My first match was against a Mountain Troll and Huge Fire Elemental. I about soiled my pants when the Troll smacked Tiamat for a critical, but 4 breath weapons later, including hitting the HFE with the cold cone for 90 damage, it was over. - Nice guy though.
My second match was against a Tundra scout and purple worm. Between the two, they were trampling and eating everything BUT tiamat. I was lucky enough to cath them both with 4 breath weapons in a row (holding back activations in one round, then winning initiative in the following round). - Another nice guy.
My third match made me a nervous wreck... Tiamat vs. Tiamat on kings road. He had some excellent tech (the warden, the war reaver, AND a slaughterstone). I was able to use my line breath weapons to take out his tech, luckily. Both Tiamats were alive when time ran out, and mine was actually a little worse for wear than his, but it turned out to be my decision to use the diseased rats in my band for point denial that won me the match on points. (My opponent did not pursue victory areas, because he knew the nearby rats would run in and deny him the points). 4 round later, I had 100 points from victory areas, and that was the winning factor. - Another nice guy (is that why they named this place that?)
My fourth match was against YRM_DM, whom I have been looking forward to playing for a long time. Unfortunately, he had less-than-great pulls (but had done a fantastic job of going 3-0 so far, (including beating a Bahamut band with his Displacer Lord, Cadaver collector, and Purple worm). Unfortunately, on King's Road, There's nothing they can do against Tiamat. I further honed my "breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe, run!" tactics, and I found myself 4-0, a first for me.
Then, the final four. This was not gonna be easy, I was gonna have to earn that second booster. I faced Bahamut, and for the first time that day, I lost map initiative (and set up on Queen Peregrine's tomb). Gone was the cover I used for Tiamat's hit and run tactics, and I knew if the king was able to repeatedly base her, it would be a long day for the queen. I think my opponent was surprised with Tiamat's 2 activations, and was too agressive with his warband (and kept them nice and close together). 2 breath weapon cones later, Bahamut was a lonely king. The activation advantage proved to be critical, as I backpeddled Tiamat all the way back into a corner, as I threw each of my pieces, in the path of the king. (making sure he could not base her). Despite my clever retreats, I quickly started running out of pieces and options (and breath weapons). Between my breath weapons, and hit and run melee using melee reach 2, Bahamut was down to 115 hp before he and Tiamat (175 hp left) went toe to toe. Ultimately, the 2 activations proved to be too much for the | | Now go forth and destroy your enemies... - The Lance (Champion of Minsc and/or Boo) | |
