Yesterday was great went 3/2; wont go through all the matches but my highlight and worse betting. Highlight was fighting with Zaukrie; I didn’t win any initiatives but the last. I had let him flank Tordek and I am sure he was going to give him a bad betting, but between Draco and Tordek we semi flanked Barney and I was able to critically hit him causing death. This in turn let me flank AoB, now although Tordek was down to 5 hit points; I got the AoB to route. This in turn allowed me to get Tordek out of harms way for the rest of the match. This was a quick game, but not my quickest, thanks to Spoon the Slayer, our 2 minute match gave me time to contemplate my day. I found out that Between an Eldrich and Purple Wurm a Dracolich can not hold up. After slaying my Dracolich in the second round, Spoon the Slayer was kind enough to swallow Tordek whole!!!! And all I got was to swing once at a hyena. But, the gaming was great and I did have a good time, thanks Jason for judging and thanks MD for have such a comfortable venue to play. Now come on 6 more days so I can pick up cases of Plastic Crack.

I had a great time, except I still thin the DCI software sucks. [)] I go from one roll from playing for first to sixth with a win?

Anyway, it was an interesting day. I ended up running Tiamat, Firebelcher, Cleric of Syreth, Spellscale Sorcerer, Wererat Rogue, Taver Brawler, Aasimar Fighter and a Diseased Dire Rat. I had pulled a Huge Fire Elemental, Witchknife and a second rat, but decided Shield of Faith, Magic Weapon and backup Commander 5 were more important. I chose teh Teleport Temple since I was running bsicallt a single hitter. Too bad I only won map initiative once.

Round 1 vs. Keefer w/ Epic Tordek, Tundra Scout, etc.
I won the map. I was on "A". He played the scout agressively and Tordek conservatively. Tiamat's fire breath and teh firebelcher roasted teh scout in a hurry, and my wererat had saved vs. the scout's trample the round before.

1-0

Round 2 vs. Sgt Rock w/ Bahamut, Barney and a Dragonborn Fighter on his map.

This could have been ugly. This should have been ugly. It was ugly, but not the way you would think. I had to trust in my Blur and tile points because he had pure, beating power on his side. I ended up running the faster fodder around, buffing and eventually planting Tiamat in the eventual middle whil edropping a breath weapon on both his tanks just barely. Sure enough, next round, Barney comes up and Bahamut flies around to flank. The firebelcher and Tiamat concentrate on Barney while the Spellscale keeps failing spell resistance rolls to nerf Bahamut. I think Mike missed seven or eight times, one due to a "1", one to a SoF buff and five or six to conceal. He had five attacks one round and only connected once on Tiamat. Barney went down fast and bahamut missed a few more times and went down too.

2-0

Round 3 vs. Fortress w/ Displacer Beast Packlord, Meepo, Purple Worm, etc.

This was an odd game that ended with each of us missing attacks due to conceal. Tile points and killing the Purple Worm was what madeteh difference.

3-0

Round 4 vs. Alex w/ Bahamut, Magma Hurler, etc. on Field of Ruin.
Winner plays for first place.

This was an odd one. I won first initiative, and forgot Bahamut could fly 12 and breath, so I move my firebelcher just to the edge of tile points before moving Tiamat. He flew, breathed, and froze the poor firebelcher. Down 39 right away but I could still come back. I denied him tile points, I racked up tile points, Tiamat breathed and breathed and breathed. I had only lost the Firebelcher and maybe one fodder piece at the point I got him down to just Bahamut. Then came the critical round:

I win initiative with Tiamat at 85 HP left and Bahamut standing toe-to-toe with 130. I decide then I'm going to heal 10 HP on Tiamat and Enfeeble Bahamut with my first phase as I would need all six hits including a crit to kill Bahamut if I attack and he would need to hit all three times, pass conceal all three times and include one crit if I buffed first. I'm also up BY 225 tile points at this time. I play the odds like I'm sitting on four-of-a-kind in poker and bet all-in. So I nerf, I heal and await his rolls. First roll: Hit, conceal roll, passes. I'm still okay. Second roll: hit, conceal roll passes. I'm sweating a bit but still okay, right? Third roll, a MOTHERF@^$^&^@$%#@%(*@% 20! Okay, can he pass conceal? Yes! I ended up with 300 tile points in the end and lost.

3-1

Round 4 vs. Corey w/ Epic Blackguard and Sorcerer on Black Dragon. He chose my map. This turned out to be just a bad matchup for him and I won.

4-1 and ended in 6th. I found myself HOPING for 5th or 6th as the first two got two boosters, but 3rd and 4th got one and the rest of us would draft and knowing that there should be a few Huge Rares to choose from. Well, sure enough, the "third place" booster had Tiamat and a Nightmare, IIRC and the 4th had a Spider and a Clawfoot, I think. I see Bahamut, Tiamat, Dracolich and Eldritch Giant on the draft board and Brimulk nabs Tiamat to go with his Bahamut. I debate for all of 3 seconds, nabbing Bahamut over the Dracolich and leave a very happy man. A great day of minis, great friends, new people to meet, new plasticrack and the big two minis to boot. It just doesn't get any better than that.

What a day. Thanks, Jason, for judging and helping out quickly when my games ran into various permutations of questions on the King's Road, which I'd never played on in tournaments before, but used in every match-up.

Yes, the Griffon Cavalry was very non-epic. Squishy piece, that, but excellent for turn 1 VP denial in the joint victory area on King's Road. I don't think it made more than a few attacks the whole day.

Thanks, Gunthar, for clarifying what happened in that second to last match which I could hear but did not get a chance to watch. I was more than a little grateful not to have a second Tiamat mirror-match facing a blurred version of the goddess (I played Christ T., a friend of mine, who was also pushing the hydragurl in the 4th round and barely squeaked out of that one). I have much to thank Alex L. for. Interestingly, we (Gunther and I) both faced what I considered to be our nightmare bands -- Bahamut with Bluespawn -- and came out ontop. In my case, Zaukarie was running the band. He did route Tiamat, but thanks to F4, she only goes far enough to get away from Bahamut's fear aura, then thunders back to make the Bluespawn rue the day. I had assumed that B&B would generally make short work of Tiamat, but I guess my match was not the exception, proving once again how generally worthless are my armchair prognostications.

A journey of 1,000 miles starts with a good whooping.

I had a great time at the event as well. It was good to see many of the guys there and play some fun matches. The Aspect of Bahamut and War Weaver combo was definitly a great combo, so it came down to either Bluespawn or non-epic Tordek\Storm Archer\Blackspawn\Whitespawn\Small Fire Elemental. Since Tordek could dish out decent damage and the War Weaver could give Blackspawn a magic weapon, I decided to go with greater numbers, rather than two beasts and I think that was also a good choice.

Round 1: PhibbyRizo - Bahamut vs. Bahamut on the King's Road

Right away, I had to fight a mirror match, and he had more hit points with his Collecter and Greenspawn. It was a fairly even matchup, but I was able to get his Collecter to half with the line breath weapon, and hit his AoB in the process as well. The Blackspawn BW came in handy that match, and Tordek and AoB were able to finish off his AoB.
1-0

Round 2: David G - Tiamat vs. Bahamut, on the King's Road

So, after achieving victory against AoB, I now got a chance to try my luck against Tiamat. After looking at her card, I knew two things: I had to hit her with my line of force early, and my other BW was useless. My advantage was speed, and my War Weaver. I brought my Fire Elemental out to grab tile points near Tiamat, and sent the rest of my army up the road. The Archer hung back, since he had a good line down the road, and could always target something, even if it meant shooting into melee. David double activated his Tiamat earlier than I thought, in order to move up and kill my SFE, but he rolled a one. I was a little surprised he didn't use one of his breath weapons to kill it, but I wasn't complaining. He used his first activation of the second round to kill the elemental, then he moved and used his second activation to line Tordek and my Blackspawn. So far, AoB was untouched, so I moved in and went to town on her. [:)] I also lucked out because when I cast both my Snake Swiftness on AoB, David forgot to use his Counterspell (which only one would have had line of sight) so AoB could dish out the extra damage on Tiamat. Once I ganged up with the three beaters on Tiamat, I was able to take her down quickly, and go after the remaining forces.
2-0

Round 3: Chris T - Tiamat vs. Bahamut, reverse side of the King's Road.

Since we both had archers, Chris decided to go with my map, but he also won map side, so he choose the side that I had won my first two rounds on. He moved out Tiamat, and I was able to bring AoB out to line BW her. I kept him in position where a cone would only effect two of my three hitters. Unfortunately, I could not get Tordek and Blackspawn from both getting hit instead, which resulted in both of them dropping very early in the match. In hindsight, I would have sent Tordek to go after his Greenspawn and tile grabbers, rather than getting him stuck on the side I did. Or, I could have just double-moved him in the second round, so that Tiamat might not have been able to get him and th Blackspawn. However, the match still came down to one initiative roll. If I win the roll, I can kill Tiamat with one hit (only 25HP left) and cleave into the Greenspawn for three more chances to hit and kill him outright. With 85HP on AoB left, I knew he probably wouldn't survive 6 attacks from Tiamat. I was right, because Chris won initiative and proceeded to chop AoB into little parts and then retreat where my Archer could not target her. After two shots at the Greenspawn, he was based and it was pretty much round over. It was a tough match, and always hard to lose on an initiative roll, but it was very well played.
2-1

Round 4: Fortress 13 - PW and DBPL va. AoB, on the King's Road.

Fortress was the first match where I didn't have to fight AoT or AoB, so I was just happy to get some variety. [:)] He picked map choice, but I was able to pick the side. I went with the one that worked the first two rounds, and it helped again. I won init and let him move first. By the time it came down to AoB's turn, the DB was in perfect position. As a bonus, Meepo was just far enough away so I could use the breath weapon, and also hit his Magma Hurler. The hurler fell and the DB took full damage. I moved Tordek up to fight the DB, while AoB focused on the Purple Worm. I was able to get the PW to run away (although not off) and then based his commander. After Tordek finished off the DB (with three 11s rolled on the conceal checks), I moved him up to flank the commander. In hindsight, I should have moved him away, as I knew the PW has rallied. The next round, he wins init and moves the PW in to attack Tordek. He hits, and I have to roll against the swallow. Gulp. Tordek down the hole. I use AoB to fight back, and finish off the Purple Worm the next round.
3-1

Round 5: Marv S - Sorceror and Tordek vs. AoB and Tordek in Hellspike Prison

Marv won map choice, and decided to pick Hellspike Prison rather than the King's Road. Since I had never played on this map, I took the side that had easier access to tile points when I won map init. It turned out to be good and bad. I had Marv go first after winning init, and did my usual WW magic weapon on AoB, Tordek and Blackspawn. I move everyone up along the opposite side from my tile grabbing SFE, leaving him to fend for himself. The smoke helped me get first round tile points, where Marv was not able to get tile points. The next round, he moved Meepo up so I could not use my breath weapons and sent his sorceror after my tile grabber. I moved up with Tordek, and decide to have him attack the Aasmir first, since he has cleave, and can go after Meepo next. I critcally hit the Aasmir, which I was really wishing would have been Meepo, but still managed to hit Meepo with both Tordek and Bahamut. I then moved Bahamut into the smoke to grab tile points and base his Sorc. He attacks once, moves away to cast a scorching ray, and keeps moving away from AoB. He then moves his spider and Tordek to attack my Tordek. He hits, and Tordek can not see AoB, and routes. We both made a mistake, because we roll init, forgetting that my Tordek still had to activate. Marv said he should have routed off the board, since he still wouldn't have been able to see AoB to rally, but I had already moved AoB into position to rally him, and Marv had already moved and attacked. However, he should have atleast gotten another roll without AoB, since he was Independent, so we called it even because I rolled a 16 anyway. It also didn't make much of a difference, because he killed Tordek with his Sorceror that round, while I killed his spider with AoB. After basing my War Weaver and Storm Archer, it came down to the Sorc and Tordek vs. Bahamut. Since I already had 50 points in tiles, plus AoB is 318 points to his 259 with Tordek and Sorceror, I move to the Victory area hidden in the smoke. He knew he had to come to me, since otherwise I would win on tile points, so me moves Tordek and the Sorc. in. He moves them so they are both in the smoke and the Sorc can use reach to hit me next round. I move over so I am still on VP, but out of reach. He moves Tordek in to get a hit, and the next round, I use my attacks to finish him off. That leaves a almost half-wounded AoB vs. an over-half wounded Sorc. He moves in to attack, and AoB finishes him off. Out of curiousity, we roll AoB's morale check, since he was 10 HP away, and I got a 7. It would have been scary, if that 1 had come up, since even from that far away, he might have been able to get off the board, but the point was moot.

Final record: 4-1

I wasn't sure where in the top 6 I would be, since we would have an undefeated, and then five 4-1s. I figured the undefeated who lost would be 2, but that left four of us for 3-6. I think it came down to the game between Squirrel Boy and David G. If David G. wins, I would probably have been in the top four, since I beat him earlier in the day. If SB wins, all my previous opponents are 3-2 or lower, so I probably end up 5th or 6th. I guess David's Tiamat had a lot more HPs left when time was called, but SB had more tile points, and since they were both still alive, SB won on points. So instead of getting one sealed booster, I was able to pick first, and decided that Tiamat would look nice next to Bahamut on the shelf, although I really liked the look of the Eldritch Giant and the Dracolich, too. [:)]

As an aside, the was the second tourney where I had a figure that was not completely put together. At the UD pre-release, I had the one-armed Rikka. At this one, my Bahamut was not glued between his left and right side, so I had to use a rubber band to hold him together. I seem to do alright at the events where I get a figure with a defect, so I guess I can't complain. [)] He is now glued back together, and should only have to be in his shoulder harness for one more day.

Thanks to Jason for running a very smooth event and answering all my simple questions about forest, line of site and effect, other such things. It was great to see everyone again, and I look forward to the next one. Now, just have to wait for Friday to pick up the goods. [:)]

It was definitely a fun time! 34th place- Too bad I had to leave early. [:(]

I didn't get to meet too many Maxminis folks. Probably spending too much time trying to figure out a warband and how to play properly. (my third time playing skirmish)

I met Newtoncain and Dj-chuckles(whom I had met once before, briefly) but that's about it.

Yeah, I really need to work on my H/W list one of these days...

I can't , I work until 630pm, then I'll head over to get my cases, then home to crack them w/ spoon. If I didn't have to work the next day[:(], I'd stay late and play.

I think I got the worst pull from the qualifier. I ended up with the Huge Fire Elemental and the Huge Fiendish Spider for my huges. For my rares, I got the Wizened Elder Watcher and the Goliath Cleric of Kavaki.

I summed up the top 8 miniatures point costs and I had 521 points.

Lucky for me I was able to use the promo Huge Fiendish Spider.

When I first tried to create my warband, I was trying to eliminate the 21 extra points. I didn't even think about using the promo. Well someone suggested the promo and at that point most of the time was gone for creating the warband. I ended up with the Huge Fire Elemental, 2X Huge Fiendish Spiders, Cleric of Syreth, and a Hunting Hyena. Not only an unfavorable warband, but also only 5 activations, I knew I had no chance with 5 X AOTs & 6 X AOBs. (I counted up later that I didn't use 13 points in my warband which could have helped with the activations.)

I ended up going home early and not finishing the tournament, but I did end up going 2 & 2.

The first player I beat was inexperienced and had almost as bad of a pull as I had. I think he had Barney instead of the spider. The rest of his pulls were similar. He even had the same crappy rares as I did, but he used them.

The second game I won was from someone who wasn't a very good player. He actually was using epic Tordek and the Tundra Scout. I poisoned them both and waited. He also kept hitting the Huge Fire Elemental with the Tundra Scout doing 40 damage to himself each turn due to the double damage from fire.

I had fun, but was extremely dissappointed with the pulls. My luck always runs that way though. 2&2 is respectable too, so I shouldn't complain. I don't know if I will play a limited tournament again.

Thanks Jason for running the match. I't was a rollercoaster day for me. I opened my boxes and got a Blue Godslayer and a Bahmut. I was thinking I was going to rock.....until I started rolling dice.

First game B floated around and mopped up fodder while the GS engaged my oppnents PW. Once the fodder was gone it was jsut mop up and the worm and the displacer beast.

1-0

Second game As described earlier I think I had about a 75% miss rate vs blur.

1-1

Third Game was pretty mucha repeat of the second game had an abnormally high miss % vs a blured Bahmut

1-2

Had to check out of the match at this point. Not enought time in the day for all the things I have to do. Had a great time while I was there.

I like Ike!

I don't think it's the DCI software, Gunthar - it's the swiss system, especially how it works in an environment where people tend to drop out of events.

I recently helped judge a chess tournament where the #1 player and the #2 player heading into the last round were paired against each other. The #1 player was 5-0, while the #2 player was 4-1, and the #2 player won the game. #2 wins the tourney, right?

Wrong.

What happened was that while #2 was winning his game, every one of the five players he'd played against in the previous five rounds was losing, which completely deep-sixed his tiebreakers. (And in chess, at least, there is no 'head-to-head' tiebreaker.) Sure, it's bad luck, but that's how the system works. Now consider what will happen in a swiss-pair DDM tourney. It's a lot easier for your four or five previous opponents in a tourney to go 0-4 or 0-5 in a round, torching your tiebreaks, when half or more aren't even playing in the tournament anymore. (This is another reason why I like the MN prize distribution system in DDM - it gives people incentive to stay in the tournament and keep the tiebreak system someone honest.)

Oh, and hey guys - I'm back, I hope. I'm even considering taking up lordrahl on his offer of a casual sealed match Friday night at the Den. (I'm *way* out of practice, and need to get back into fighting shape, after all.)
