We had a fantastic turnout with 28 players in all. This is why the qualifier should have been held here instead of Edmonton (only 2 locals showed up for a total of 11, 7 of which play regularly in Okotoks....grrr I'll leave that for another day).

I went into the tournament expecting to play Spider, Godslayer, Displacer Beast and hoped for a non huge commander. I opened my first box and.....Yes Bahamut! Well that narrows down my choices.

My pulls were
Huges: Bahamut, Huge Fire Elemental, Spider
Rares: Tordek (thought about using epic), Spellscale Sorcerer
Uncommon: Stirge, Blackspawn exterminator, Yuan-ti Halfblood Sorcerer, Dragonwrought Kobold
Common: Doom fist monk X2, Dread Warrior, Kobold Zombie, Tavern Brawler, Cleric of Laogzed, Whitespawn Hordeling, Cloudreaver.

I went with Bahamut, Tordek, Blackspawn, Spellscale Sorcerer, Doomfist monk, Dragonwrought Kobold, Stirge and Tavern Brawler with the Teleport Temple as my map.

Round 1. I faced Paul who had the bonded fire summoner and the huge fire elemental with the spider and a cleric of Syreth. I lost map initiative and we played on the field of ruin. I won second round initiative and due to a full move my first turn was able to get both his commanders in my 60 pt line attack which killed them both on turn 2. Next turn 120 damage to the fire elemental and it was pretty much over.
1-0

Round 2. I faced Bryan who had a purple worm, Eldritch Giant and a non epic blackguard on nightmare. I won map so we played on the teleport temple. This match was closer than I thought it would be as his worm ate Tordek, the Balckspawn, and the doom fist monk! Good thing I did not have epic Tordek or that would have been it! I managed to kill the blackguard and then based the giant while doing significant damage which caused him to rout. The hero for me was the Stirge who did 30 pts of damage to the purple worm over 2 turns and killed it!
2-0

Round 3. I face Dean who had an epic Blackguard and a Godslayer? I won map initiative and we played on the teleport temple. I can't remember much of this match (sorry Dean!) but I do remember I got a couple of critical hits on the Blackguard and got most of his fodder with my line attack.
3-0

Round 4. Another Bahamut! Laine had Bahamat and a Godslayer and I lost map initiative so we played on the King's Road. The difference for me here was the spellscale sorcerer who cast blur on my Bahamut and managed to enfeeble both his Bahamat and the Godslayer. Tordek slowed down the Godslayer enough for my Bahamut to take out his. I can't remember if I killed the Godslayer or we ran out of time but this was a tough match that only my Spellscale Sorcerer made the difference on. I like the combo and with the Dragon Totem Hero I may try it again!
4-0

Knockout stage final 8
Round 1. I played Richard who had Tiamat and a cleric of Syreth. I managed to hit Tiamat with the ray of enfeeble (passed the spell resistance) and then I brought Bahamut in for a drago a drago battle. I know I could have killed his fodder then run away but I did not want to win like that. After being nerfed Tiamat needed 10's to hit and then had to pass conceal with max damage at 90. I needed 3 and 8 (he had legions shield) for a max 105 pts of damage. Well the odds were with me and I won with Tordek coming in to chip away at Tiamat.

Round 2. Now I had to play Tim who had already beaten two Tiamat bands! He had a Huge Displacer Beast, Godslayer, Fire summoner, Ogre, Golden Protector, witchknife, copper dragon and something else. Now I hate conceal. Last week I missed 7 conceal 11 checks in a row so I really wanted to kill the displacer beast. Well I got him with both breath weapons, but only got the ogre as a secondary target with the line attack. As he was based he needed 15+ to not run. Sure enough 17. Well now most of my fodder is dead and he has serious activation control. I managed to kill everything but the displacer beast and the witchknife but when time was called I lost by 18pts due to all of the victory area points he had accumulated. Tim did a fantastic job piloting this band and deserved to be in the final 2. I still think I win 4 out of 5 games, but only due to the strength of Bahamat! I lost 2 of 3 initiatives when he had no commander... yes my rolls were that good this game!

Terry was the other finalist who also had Bahamut, but with a Warden of the wood (Terry please fill in the details). Tim and Terry were both late for other appointments and agreed to split the final.

So of the 6 aspects the were drawn all 3 Bahamut's made the final and only 1 of 3 Tiamat's made the final 8! She was just to slow to keep up with most bands.

All in all a great day. Thank you Valley of the Mage for a great event.
Anyone else who attended please update and my apologies if I got anything wrong.

Thank you for your report. You wouldn't perhaps know the composition of the other finalists' bands?

It is I, LeClaire!

So we have to champion something? Alright, I pick the mighty Flumph!

The other two finalists were Terry and Laine. I described Laine's band as best I could in my round 4 notes. I did not play Terry so I only know about Bahamut and the Warden of the Woods. I hope they read this and update it with their bands.

I'm the Richard that Roadkill played in the final 8. I thought I'd at least list my band and record for the pre-release.

My Band:
AoT
Cleric of Syreth
Large Green Dragon
Small Copper Dragon
Cloud Reaver
Diseased Dire Rat
Hunting Hyena
Azer Fighter
500pts/9 activations
Map: Hellspike

Round 1 Loss vs Slartibart. we played slowly trying to get a handle on our bands
Round 2 Win vs SoHBD, Epic Slaughterstone, Tordek (reg.) band
Round 3 Win vs Epic Griffon Cav band
Round 4 Win vs Barney/SoHBD??? band
Round 5 Eliminated by Roadkill and his AoB band. AoB and Spellscale was just evil...plus I made a huge tactical mistake by leaving Tiamat toe to toe with AoB when nerfed...shoulda used the breath weapons rather than trying to hit AC27...but Roadkill played a very strong game and his map choice of Teleport Temple really limited what I could do with Tiamat

All in all it was a really impressive turn out at the pre-release and I was glad to make it to the top 8 and had a great time seeing all the different bands that were in play.
