Well,

I finished 2nd in the Colorado Springs pre-release, and once again Bahamut won the day. My final opponent (Matt) also had an AoB warband.

My key pulls were:
Aspect of Bahamut
Huge Fire Elemental
Huge Spider promo
Goliath Cleric
Slaughterstone Eviscerator
Nothing really of note in the Uncommon slots...

So, Bahamut was a slam dunk, but what to fill it out with. I really didn't want to use the Fire Elemental because looking around the room, I saw 2 more Bahamuts and 2 Tiamats (turns out there were 3). I wasn't sure the Huge Spider was really a great choice. In the end, I just decided to go with a 2 activation warband...Bahamut and Epic Slaughterstone (I didn't have a 3 pointer).

I chose Field of Ruin, with the plan of parking Bahamut in the center victory area to get his damage in until he started getting vulnerable, then swap in the Eviscerator and win on points.

First match was against a Tiamat band, and it was the closest of the day. My opponent did a great job maximizing his activations (only 3 creatures in his warband), and used all the breath weapons to great effectiveness. I probably should have lost, but he missed 5 attacks in a row (Tiamat on Bahamut) towards the end of the match. Lucky to be 1-0.

Second matchup was against an Epic Tordek/Black Dragon Sorcerer warband - another one that I feared. However, my planned strategy worked well...I was able to isolate the Black Dragon, and a well timed Line breath weapon killed both his Cleric of Syrith and forced the Black to MC, which he failed due to the Aura of Fear. He did manage to get 90 points worth of Fire damage on my Dragon, and I had taken an AoO from Tordek, so I knew I couldn't handle Tordek at that point. So, instead, I tied up Tordek with my Eviscerator and used Bahamut to fly around and slaughter the rest of his band. By the time Tordek finished off the Eviscerator, it was just down to Tordek and Bahamut, and I was up on points. I kept running away with Bahamut to different victory areas, and he couldn't catch up. 2-0

My third match was against an Epic Griffon/Godslayer combo...My opponent made a few mistakes which prevented her from getting the Godslayer on Bahamut in a timely manner. In fact, due to her blocking herself with her own figures and my positioning of the Eviscerator, the Godslayer never had an attack on Bahamut. I killed the griffon and a bunch of fodder and won on tile points. 3-0

Round 4 was against Jake (Felagund)...he continued his streak of bad pulls, and it looked like it would be no contest - DB Pack Lord, Purple Worm, Ogre Skirmisher, Demonic Gnoll, and some other stuff. However, I started out by losing map init and being forced to play on Peregrine. Jake's strategy from the start was to swarm Bahamut and hope...turned out pretty good for him. He did a great job of maneuvering the DB Packlord so that my Eviscerator was "forced" to attack it. Not taking anything at all from Jake (at this point he was 3-0 with some sub-par pulls), but lady luck was also on his side, as I rolled several 1's on my attacks with the Eviscerator, I missed conceal about 70% of the time, his Purple Worm made both BW saves, the Pack Lord made 1 BW save, and his Ogre made its morale check with Aura of Fear 5! Even with all that, after he killed Bahamut, I still had a chance to win, but this map was not forgiving at all to me for tile points. I had none, and he had been getting them since round 1. So, I'm 3-1 going into the finals.

First match in the finals was against Jake again...This time on Field of Ruin, and it was completely different. I caught a bunch of his figs in a Line of Death, forced his Purple Worm to double move to base Bahamut, and then won init and sent it running. After only a few rounds, Jake decided to concede because he really wasn't in a good position and had a long drive home.

As I said, the finals were against a much more balanced Bahamut warband...He had the Firebelcher, a couple of Diseased Rats, and some other stuff. I had the choice of concentrating my fire on his Bahamut or picking off everything else, and hopefully not losing my Eviscerator. I chose the latter, and it led to my downfall. It was close, and if either one of us had played slower, I probably could have won on time. However, that's not my style, so I just went at it. My opponent (Matt) quickly recognized that his best bet was to get the points for the Eviscerator, and proceeded to do just that. he played very well, and dropped it on the second to last round. He still had 2 scrubs collecting tile points and his Bahamut. In order to kill the scrubs, I'd lose out on tile points, and he'd go ahead of me...I didn't have time to take down his Bahamut, so that was pretty much it. A great game and a great experience....

My prizes for second were 2 WoDQ boosters and a Wardrums Booster...pulled Barney, Troll, Spellscale Sorcerer, Magma Hurler, and Snig Worg Rider....not great, but free is free!!!!

Thanx,
Mark

Congrats!

Now give those of us up North some of that Aspect love. We got none. [B)]

Jake's pull wasn't that bad - it was just weakend by the fact that half of the competition had Aspects.

We're doing Epic this Friday if you want to come up and join us. [:D]

I liked the strategy of the two huges. Nice job!

We need to do a North vs. South tourney some time.
That be interesting.

I agree. Civil war sounds like fun! Also congrats Mark on the second place finish.
