So, we had our weekly tournament on Thursday at Gameknight Games and Cool Stuff here in sunny Winnipeg, MB (it's been close to 30 celsius everyday for like a month, or at least it seems that way). This week's tournament was an epic sealed game with WotDQ boosters and was run by one of our local delegates, Rob MacPherson (Idzy). This of course meant that they store owner could play in his second sanctioned tournament ever, which filled him with joy. This being the third sealed tournament of the month, I wasn't expecting a huge turnout and wasn't sure if I wanted to play (45 dollars for a goliath cleric of suckslotski and a WEW (rhymes with eeeew) is a bit much imo). However when I got there it was announced that everyone playing would receive either two tiamat or two dracolich boosters (so everyone would get a huge rare) so I figured I might play if there were an odd number of people without me, which ended up being the case.

We ended up with 6 people so we opened up 3 cases and our rares were the normal pairs, although between 6 people we had 2 aspects of bahamut and 2 aspects of tiamat, so it was gonna be a rather difficult tourney even if you got one of the dragon gods since you'd likely end up playing two of em (we were going to play three rounds).

Last sealed tournament Chris L (Omand) pulled an AoB, Bluespawn Godslayer, spellscale sorcerer combo that allowed him to go 3-0. This time Chris again had an AoB and Bluespawn Godslayer, but no spellscale sorcerer so at least he wouldn't have blurred bahamuts and such. I got the dracolich boosters from the case Chris got his tiamat boosters, so it seemed like I'd get a tiamat (takes some of the fun outta things if you know it's there) and that was the case I did indeed get an aspect of tiamat along with a mountain troll. My 2 rares were the Goliath Cleric of Kavaki and Dragonborn Fighter. My total pulls were:

Aspect of Tiamat
Mountain Troll
Goliath Cleric of Kavaki
Dragonborn fighter
Ogre Skirmisher (my first one)
Storm Archer
Warden of the Wood
Small Fire Elemental
Diseased Dire Rat
Hunting Hyena
Aasimaar Fighter
Kobold Zombie
Witchknife
Doomfist Monk
Azer Fighter
Something else

Tiamat was obviously in, and that excluded the mountain troll. I discarded the Goliath Cleric, +8 isn't gonna hit anything and he doesn't have the hp to survive a breath weapon so it's unlikely he's gonna get his cure spell off. He's also slow as heck. I considered the dragonborn fighter, but he doesn't do magic damage, so all his dragon foe abilities would really do in most cases is cancel out a target's dr, although he could benefit from tiamat's CFX as well, which woulda been decent, but he's still speed 4. I then moved on to my uncommons, which were quite useful, so I threw the lot of them into the warband. That left me 23 pts for 3 activations which was filled nicely by the hunting hyena, diseased dire rat, and asimaar fighter.

Aspect of Tiamat
Warden of the Wood
Ogre Skirmisher
Storm Archer
Diseased Dire Rat
Small Fire Elemental
Hunting Hyena
Aasimaar Fighter

Not too shabby. Tiamat as my titan of doom, Warden of the Wood and Storm archer added some ranged damage and autodamage, Skirmisher served as a secondary damage dealer, 3 speedy tile grabbers/tile grabber killers in the DDR, SFE, and HH, and the aasimaar added the last activation.

Round 1 vs Scott (The Beer Baron, not to be confused with Beer Baron)

Scott pulled the other Tiamat and had:

Aspect of Tiamat
Cleric of Syreth
Large Green Dragon
Warweaver
Small Copper Dragon

He won map init and chose his Tomb of Queen Peregrine and he also won set up init and chose side B, giving him 4 victory areas to my 3. I set up most of my band in the top right (if you're looking on vassal) with tiamat and I think the Aasimaar Fighter in the bottom right.

I won first round init and let him go first without thinking things over. I had a nice opportunity to blast a bunch of stuff with the flamestrike from my Warden of the Wood (WoW). He cast magic weapon on the small copper, large green, and warweaver with the warweaver, and then mwed tiamat with the cleric of syreth. He had moved his warweaver out, but left the cleric hanging back and with my first activation I managed to flamestrike the small copper (failed save, made morale), large green dragon (made save) and cleric of syreth (also made save). I then moved one of my fodder pieces. He double moved the small copper dragon on my magic circle victory area and the large green onto my 4 square victory area of difficult terrain. I had wanted to move something there, but I wanted to do it at the end of the round so tiamat wouldn't just smoke me. Ho hum. On my second phase I used the storm archer to fire at the small copper, hitting for 15 and killing the little ankle biter, so he really didn't have a tile grabber and my activation advantage increased. I then moved another fodder piece of some sort. He double double moved tiamat into the middle of the board. If I hadn't moved my aasimaar fighter into an inconvenient position that prevented tiamat from moving her full 8 squares I'd have been able to use his tiamat to aim a nice line bw hitting both the cleric of syreth (CoS) and warweaver, but I had to settle for double moving tiamat up.

I won 2nd round init iirc and moved my ogre skirmisher up to jab the large green for 30 damage, and double moved my small fire elemental (SFE) onto the magic circle victory area bordering the big statue sarcophogus thingy. He used his CoS to cast Legions shield of faith and his first tiamat activation to cone my ogre and hyena. Hyena died and ogre failed save but fortunately made morale. I then used my tiamat to hit his CoS and warweaver with a line of acid, the cleric made his save [:(] and his MC but the warweaver did fail and went kaplowy. I made a bit of a mental error here in not getting my diseased dire rat outta trouble here I think. I believe I didn't expect him to use his 2nd tiamat activation in his next phase, but seeing as how he had just two activations left, he kinda had to and I didn't take that into account. Anyway, I did something other then move my dire rat (I think I took a couple potshots at tiamat with my storm archer, hitting once for 10 damage). He then moved his greenie to kill the tile grabbing SFE and his tiamat then used a line of her own to zap the dire rat and WoW. Dire rat failed save and died, WoW failed save but made MC. But now my SFE, hyena, and dire rat were all dead and I wouldn't get a tile point advantage (I wouldn't have a disadvantage either, but that's sorta beside the point). I finished up by using a second line to kill his cleric of syreth. Oh, and when his large green killed the SFE it took 5 damage, but made morale. At this point the score was 95-27 but my ogre and WoW were definitely in danger of dying. Although if I could kill his large green it would be ok. I double moved my WoW outta danger at the end of the round.

Apparently we'd been playing pretty slow since time was called during round 3. His tiamat killed my ogre and his large green flew away. Looking at points, it wasn't gonna be enough. I could double double moved tiamat onto a victory area to counteract his tiamat, and he wasn't gonna be able to kill anything else this round. So final score was 120-90. Mighta been interesting to see what woulda happened had the game gone on a bit longer, but then again, it might not have since it would've likely just degenerated into our tiamats attacking each other or something else that just involves a bunch of die rolls.

1-0

Round 2 vs Jay (Stonefro2000)

Jay had:

Cleric of Syreth
Demonic Gnoll Archer
Dracolich
Large Green Dragon
Meepo
Cleric of Laogzed
Doom Fist Monk
Small Headless Copper (seriously the poor thing didn't have a head)

I won map init and took my teleport temple. I believe he won set up init but deffered to me, so I of course took the good side.

Round 1 I moved my forces out, moving the small fire elemental (SFE) to his victory area by mistake, but I realized the mistake (or maybe he mentioned) before I'd moved my other tilegrabbers so I just sent the hyena out to my own victory later on. I ended up with pretty much everything on one teleporter or another. He sent meepo and the small copper along the short side of the board towards the two teleporters separated by a wall while the majority of his forces moved towards the teleporter nearest his start area with the doom fist monk squatting on the teleporter.

Round 2 he won init, cast LSoF with the cleric of syreth, and killed my SFE with his demonic gnoll of doom. Then the fun started. Tiamat teleported in, moved 4 spaces and coned his demon gnoll, the dracolich, large green, cleric of laogzed, and doom fist monk. Unfortunately the fun didn't last long. His demon gnoll had resist 10 fire and cold, the large green was immune acid, the dracolich was immune cold and electricity, and the monk has evasion. I went with fire to start with, and the demon gnoll made its save taking 10 damage, the large green and dracolich both made their saves to take 20, the doom fist made his save and took nothing (gaaaah) and the cleric failed his save but made his morale check. Now I had a choice about which cone to use second. I went with acid since it would do full damage to the gnoll and dracolich along with the monk, while the cold cone would only do full damage to the large green and monk. This time his gnoll failed it's save taking the full 45 and dying (yay) but the darn monk made his save again and took nothing again (aargh). This was made up by the dracolich taking full damage by rolling a 2, and the cleric of laogzed dying. I then moved tiamat back onto the teleporter. He moved his green dragon to flank and moved the dracolich up to hit tiamat for 25. My WoW used a flamestrike on the green dragon, which failed its save and its out of command (ooc) morale save thanks to tiamat's aura of fear 5. I believe he moved his small copper dragon to grab tile points where it was promptly blasted for 30 damage by my ogre but made morale. But my storm archer was again able to kill the little dragon (two games, two small coppers have fallen to his mighty bow). meepo routed my hyena I do believe, but I just sent in the dire rat to continue collecting tile points.

Round 3 I won init and moved the ogre skirmisher to hit the dracolich for 25 damage. I then full attacked with tiamat hitting 2/3 attacks and dropping the dracolich down to 10 hp left I guess. Or maybe I only hit 1/3 attacks. If it had 10 hp left I doubt I woulda teleported away, which is what I did. Not point in letting him attack me and then having to make morale with his AoF 5 affecting me. His dracolich then hit my ogre for 25, paralyzed it, and finished it off. I think his cleric of syreth then did something. My storm archer teleported in to fire two shots at his CoS, hitting once for 15 damage. I then cast call lightning on something as well. For Tiamat's 2nd activation I think I ate meepo.

Round 4 he won init and smacked my WoW around with the dracolich but it was a simple matter for tiamat to finish off the dracolich for the win.

2-0

Round 3 vs Chris L (Omand)

Like I mentioned at the beginning Chris had the dreaded Bahamut/Godslayer combo.

Aspect of Bahamut
Bluespawn Godslayer
Small Copper Dragon
Diseased Dire Rat
Tavern Brawler x2

He won map init and chose his Field of Ruin. I believe he won set up init as well, but deferred to me. I set up on side B with most of my forces in the larger start area, but the ogre skirmisher, storm archer and some kinda speedy tile grabber started in the 3x3 area. He split up his forces with bahamut and the godslayer in the lower left (on vassal) and his fodder in the upper left.

Round 1 we both advanced and I was able to use my activation advantage to flamestrike his two tavern brawlers and my storm archer to force morale on the dire rat which it failed and routed just off the board. This gave me an even greater activation edge, and that's what I wanted. I was looking for an opportunity to base bahamut with tiamat and get off a triple attack, then giving me two shots to win init and hopefully finish him off. to that end I used my fodder to block off the godslayer which was slowly plodding its way towards the battle through all the difficult terrain. I sent my hunting hyena onto the shared victory area.

Round 2 he double moved the godslayer between the edge of the board and the shared victory area, and I was able to seal him off with my asamaar fighter and such. His small copper used its acid bw on the hyena but hyena made its save. My storm archer then blasted his small copper and it just managed to rout off. His bahamut chowed down on my hunting hyena, and this gave me the opening I wanted. The small fire elemental moved to flank bahamut and tiamat moved in. She then attacked three times, hitting twice iirc. The ogre skirmisher also got in to the fight hitting bahamut for 25 damage after dr. So I had things set up fairly nicely. At the end of the round I was up 62-25, had bahamut flanked with tiamat at full health, and the godslayer wouldn't be getting to the battle any time soon.

Round 3 Chris won init and had bahamut attack tiamat, hitting twice for a total of 70 damage. The godslayer smashed the asamaar and moved up to base the diseased dire rat which was his next obstacle on the way to tiamat. Tiamat then managed to hit bahamut and poison him, I believe I hit something like 4 out of 6 attacks and got another 10 damage from call lightning via the WoW. Bahamut easily made his morale but was left with 115 hp.

Round 4 I won init. He was poisoned, so he only really had 105 hp, but that was still enough to mean I needed to hit all six of tiamat's attacks to kill him and prevent another inconvenient amount of damage. Fortunately, that's what I did. Bahamut was dead and I was able to delay the godslayer for another two rounds and take the victory with 150 tile points.

3-0

Anyway, it was another victory for the Dragon Gods. Only 3 were played, the guy that pulled the other AoB played epic tordek instead, probably a mistake. The three dragon gods that were played ended up 7-2 and the only losses were to my tiamat.

Final standings:

Richard (Richard II, 3-0, beat Scott, Jay, Chris L)
Chris L (Omand, 2-1, beat Mike J, Chris V, lost to Richard)
Scott (The Beer Baron, 2-1, lost to Richard, beat Mike J, beat Jay)
Jay (Stonefro2000, 1-2, beat Chris V, lost to Richard, lost to Scott)
Mike J (jacksonm, 1-2, SoBD, HFS, Yuanti thingy, etc; lost to Chris L, lost to Scott, beat Chris V)
Chris V (no maxminis id, 0-3, epic tordek, displacer beast packlord, other; lost to Jay, lost to Chris L, lost to Mike J)
