| I suspect I already know the answers to these questions, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
(1) Is it possible to have a Limited tournament without buying product? For instance, there are several "random booster generators" out there, by which one could simulate Sealed pulls.
(2) If it's not possible now, what are the chances DCI would be willing to allow it?
(3) Is it legal to hold a sanctioned Constructed tournament using "virtual random boosters"?
I know some people disagree, but I strongly believe that Limited events comprise a genuinely different format ... unique enough that different skills apply, and people can excel at one or the other without being a top player in both. I personally am much better at Limited, especially Sealed, and (naturally) I enjoy it more.
On the other hand, because of the expense of buying product, Limited events are much less common than constructed, and usually only occurs in the first week or two of a new expansion's release. I think it would be great if there were some way to hold Limited events more often without the barrier to participation involved in buying endless boosters. (I realize that Wizards wants to sell boosters. But they sanction constructed, which doesn't directly sell boosters, and a "virtual" Sealed format would, like constructed, also require that participants have a healthy collection to draw from.)
Anyway, there are a lot of obstacles, and I realize that. I wonder how many folks would enjoy playing more Limited events, if it didn't mean buying two more boosters, on top of the two or three cases (or whatever) you already own? | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| Yeah, I'm thinking that doing a "virtual" booster event won't quite fly with the DCI rules. I agree that Sealed is a very different format with its own fun factor. I also generally do better in Sealed than Constructed.
One way I've gotten around the cost of doing Sealed events is to buy a case at online prices (either through the store or from an online source). Then I offer the boosters at a $1 over cost. This, of course, limits prize support heavily, but it allows you to play in the format at a deeply discounted cost.

So we've come up with a few solutions that we are currently working on getting set up that I think will really work out well. The virtual boosters work for us since we want to do the events for fun and practice but I think we also have a cheap solution that will work with DCI. Just have everyone keep a portion of their original booster purchases sealed when a new set comes out. I don't think you have to buy the boosters at the event for it to be sanctioned just as long as they're sealed. Or if you can't get enough people to keep a few unopened then save a larger amount from those who are willing and then lend them out (or sell them at a cheap price) to the people who don't have any sealed boosters left and collect the pieces back afterward. We are still waiting for Blood War to come out before we can try this but I think it will be a free way to hold Limited events and you still get to have fun ripping open boosters.

Finances are my primary obstacle to this format--I'd welcome another way to do it.

| honestly - its not in DCI / Wizards best interest to allow a virtual booster draft. they make money by selling product.. hence they have a desire to sell more.
Our FLGS does a limited tourney every month.. not week. Silly Ack. | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist

| I've run limited games in my store where I buy the product, the player uses it and turns it over to me when they're done. That product then goes in the display case for sale as singles.
Some of the young kids get to play without using up 3 months of allowance to do so. So to do this for a few of the cash strapped players really helps them out.
However...this idea has it's drawbacks. If your local group won't buy any singles, then the retailer loses. The last time we ran a limited I wasn't going to do this, and had 4 people asking me to, which is too many minis for the display case too long after the set was out. | | "GameKnight Games and Cool Stuff Winnipeg's source for RPGs and minis!" www.gameknight.ca

I'm going to propose to my group that we all hold several boosters sealed from our cases so that we can play some sealed tournaments, without having to spend another $30 for the priviledge. Especially now that the national sealed championship is going to be held locally, we're going to need all the practice that we can get if we're going to get some of the locals in that game. | | Champion of the Thoqqua

I count sealed events into my case buying strategy. I buy one locally (to support retailers! go me!), one thru the internet (cheap = good), usually get one case worth of product from pre-release / release / prizes.. that brings me to 3 and a few more thru the "series" fills out my trade stock. Considering how many major events Ive been / will be judging, I might be able to pull another case-ish out of that as well.
But thats just me.. I like playing and I honestly think I enjoy sealed way more than constructed. | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist
