Because of the odd number of people at the match we did have the dreaded "Bye" making the rounds. Luckily, our friendly judge was willing to play a match against whoever had the bye if they wanted.
Round 1
I had the bye in this round, but had not really practiced with my warband, so I gladly took Mike up on his offer to have a match (and thus practice). This was the only match of the day where I managed to win map initiative and play on my choice of map. Because the pratice match went to time I did not really see the other matches pkay out, but final standings after Round 1 were:
Richard (win) vs. Jory Nico (win) vs. Tyler Scott (win) vs. Garret Chris L. - Bye (Although I won against Mike's band of Purple Worm, Huge Fiendish Spider, Bulette, Greenfang Druid, 2x Crow Shaman, 2 x Timber Wolf).
Round 2
Match ups were as follows:
Chris L. (win) vs Nico Scott (win) vs Richard Garret vs Tyler (win) Jory - Bye
My match here was an interesting one. Nico is a great guy to play against who is still learning the ropes a bit. He could have hurt me a great deal more than he did, but he still made a respectable showing. Here is what I can remember of the game:
Nico won map choice, and took his own map (King's Road). He also won side set up and chose to set up on Start Area A. Most of his minis, except for Bahamut and one Aasimar set up in the lower & larger start area, with Bahamut and one Aasimar setting up in the upper & smaller start area. I set up in Start Area B with all of my pieces except for the Couatl and the Warforged Scout in the upper & larger start area. The Couatl went in the other start area and the Warforged Scout went to the shared victory area in the woods.
Once play started I finally got my dice going and won initiative. I made Nico go first and he moved Bahamut and an Aasimar first, towards Victory Area B with the rock in the centre. Nico spent the rest of the first turn moving things towards the centre of the map, while I spent tme moving and bolstering my forces. The Spellscale blurred Bahamut, while the Artificer boosted my warband's AC with Legions Shield of Faith. I was able to get in two attacks during that time, with my Bahamut being able to move 11 to near the centre and attack his Bahamut with melee reach 2. I also had my Couatl move and Snake Switness (burning a Legion's Undeniable Gravity) the Arcane Ballista leaving Nico's Bahamut at the end of the turn down at 170 hp. Unfortunately, a movement error on my part meant that I had put my Gold Dwarf Fighter in the wrong place and my Couatl was directly adjacent to the Arcane Ballista in order to cast Snake Swiftness. If I did not win initiative in the next round Nico could use his Bahamut's line breath weapon to hit my Bahamut, Arcane Ballista, Couatl and Artificer, likely killing the Couatl and definitely eliminating the Artificer. I scored victory points with my Warforged Scout in the joint vitory area and my Small Copper in the victory area with the rock.
Round 2 saw Nico winning intiative. I was cringing, waiting for the death blow. So was Mike, but as judge he simply watched. Nico decided against the breath weapon. I think based upon our conversation afterwards he though the Blur on my Bahamut would prevent him from hitting that piece. Instead he triple attacked with his Bahamut on my Bahamut. He hit once and beat conceal to damage me for 35, but the other two attacks missed. He also charged my Small Copper with an Aasimar and hit, but did only 5 points of damage. We traded attacks for the rest of the the round with my Arcane Ballista hitting twice more (one for 35 and one for 45 including flaming bolt). At the end of the round all my Bahamut had to do was hit three times to eliminate his Bahamut. Of course, at this point I hit with the first attack and then proceeded to roll a three and a one in my next two attacks to let his Bahamut live another round. Nico did have some luck, however, as he eliminated my Warforged Sout and damaged my Small Copper Dragon again, as well as using the Golden Protector's fire breath on my Bahamut. We both took victory points this round.
Round 3 saw me winning initiative and I was determined to put things away. The Arcane Ballista hit once on its own and then a Snake Switness put his Bahamut out of the match. Nico gamely attempted to hurt my Bahamut, and managed to rout my Gold Dwarf Soldier with a good hit from Tordek. My Bahamut, however, was not going to get hammered at this point and I used the Cold breath weapon to kill his Golden Protector outright, and rout the Dragonborn Fighter. My Small Copper killed an Aasimar, and my Gold Dwarf Soldier rallied before going off the board. Unusually, Nico chose not to leave his Skullclan under cover, but instead sent it after my Spellscale. We again both took tile points this round.
Round 4 saw me winning initiative again. My Bahamut flew over to line up Tordek and another Aasimar for the line breath weapon, and Tordek routed while the Aasimar died. Tordek would later fail his rally check and rout off the board, as the Dragonborn fighter continued to rout (although it never made it off the map). Most of my other attacks missed his remaining pieces, including a ballista bolt aimed for the Skullclan. At the end of the round I took victory points again, with Nico scoring none. With the points from pieces already eliminated that put me over the top for the game.
Nico and I had a good discussion afterwards about tactics. He won't make the same mistake again with the breath weapon, and if he were to use the same warband, or a similar one I think I would have a much tougher fight on my hands.
Round 3
Match ups were as follows:
Chris L. (win) vs. Scott Nico vs. Richard (win) Jory vs. Tyler (win) Garret - Bye
My match here was the toughest of the day, and a controversial one. Scott and I were both undefeated, but I had a bye for one game, while he was legally 2-0 through his own efforts and a good warband. I again lost map choice, and initiative went Scott's way more often than not. We only ended up playing three rounds in total for the match, with lots of manuvering. Due to a bunch of interruptions and rules references I can't give a totally accurate picture of the game, but Scott was relying on a very interesting tech combination to eliminate threats like my Bahamut. Basically he was hoping to base my Bahamut with his Sorcerer on Black Dragon, thus giving me a -5 to morale, following this up with Improved Countersong from the War Chanter, and then using the Ghaele's Gaze attack to provoke a morale save and rout Bahamut off the board. By Scott's reckoning this gave Bahamut a total of -5 to level and no commander bonus to morale saves (due to the effect of improved countersong). Not having been faced with this before I initially was taken aback by rolling a three on my morale save (which by Scott's counting had Bahamut off the board). After much debate and adjudication, however, we determined that Commanders can always add their commander rating to moral saves (as per the rule book), despite the effect of Improved Countersong, and thus Bahamut stayed on the board.
In the end the score was 108 for me and 100 to Scott. He killed my Warforged Scout and Gold Dwarf Soldier and took three rounds of victory points, while I routed his Green Dragon off the board, killed his Xeph and his Frenzied Berserker, and took one round of victory points. His Sorcerer on Black Dragon was routing when time was called (even after an extension).
I have to gice Scott credit, his was a great idea and against anyone other than Bahamut it likely would have worked (in fact it did in his earlier game against Richard). All I had to do was avoid rolling a one, and I did for the entire match.
Thanks to the store for hosting, for Scott for being a great sport about the close loss, and Mike again for judging. It was great to see people out and we are hoping to see more for the next 500 point event this coming Thursday.
Cheers

| It was my pleasure to run. Hopefully we have an even higher tournout for the next time.
I have to tell you it was pretty painful holding my tounge in that second match, a lesser Judge would have cracked. But Nico will learn from his mistakes the more he plays.
Thanks for writing the report. Now all I have to do is figure out what to play on Thursday.

| Great report Chris. That last game was definitely tight. I enjoy those. My "tech" band faired well that day. But I don't think it would be a serious contender in the long run. I'll run it again anyway sometime. I hope the game wasn't to tedious with rule consultations.
Part of that warband was actually pulled off another thread here at Maxminis. I tweaked it up somewhat. I'll go thank them for the idea. | | "GameKnight Games and Cool Stuff Winnipeg's source for RPGs and minis!" www.gameknight.ca
