Warlords of Meldore scenario (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20060831c)
I took my Mind Flayer to victory with 85 Warlord Points. Here were the bands:
Warband 1: 100 pts Mind Flayer Helmed Horror Timber Wolf Goblin Skirmisher x3 Warrior Skellie x2 map: Drow Outpost
I faced Terry: Ryld Argith Fiendish Girallon Orc Warrior x3
He won map: Teleport Temple. I won side and set up on A so most of my Speed 6 guys could reach a teleporter. Mistake #1: I set up the Wolf in a place where a slower guy could have started from and still reached a pad. In the first round, we each grabbed pads while my Wolf got points. Second round, the assault began. Mistake #2: I had a Skellie on a tp pad with my Mind Flayer right behind. Terry won init, bamfed to a nearby pad with the FG, swooped down and killed the Skellie. Then Ryld moved onto a pad, bamfed next to my Flayer and smacked him. The Flayer said 'thank you' with a Mind Blast, but both Ryld and FG made their saves. Now I was in trouble - the Flayer couldn't move without provoking an AoO that would've morale checked him, but if he stayed put, he'd surely be slaughtered next round. I moved the Horror over to help out while my Gobbos went Orc hunting. Next round, luck saved me - I won init, stunned both Ryld and the FG, and made my escape onto a victory area. The Horror took two swings on a stunned Ryld, critting once and morale checking him. Ryld stayed. Next round, he won init, the Girallon moved over and hit the Flayer for 10, Flayer made morale, and Ryld missed the Horror twice. The Horror smacked Ryld back once, then flew off and boxed in the Flayer so that the Girallon couldn't get by or hit the Flayer from reach. The FG spent the rest of the game stunned til the Horror did him in. Ryld swung around and based the Flayer next round, the Flayer took the AoO and made it to a pad with 5 hp left. He spent the rest of the game bamfing out of Ryld's reach. Terry saw that it was useless to chase the Flayer, and decided to take his one longshot - taking on the Horror with Ryld, mano e mano. Luck was not on Terry's side, and Ryld soon fell, netting me 30 Warlord Points. My items were a Magic Weapon and Armor of Resistance.
Warband 2: 200 pts Mind Flayer + Armor of Resistance Zak Rak Doogie Champ x2 Large Green Dragon + Magic Weapon T-Wolf Dire Rat War Skellie map: Mithral Mines
I faced Zack: Warpriest of Hextor LGD x2 Chraal Kobold Zombie Dire Rat
Zack hadn't come prepared for the scenario, so we helped him put some bands together from the figures he had brought. Two Large Dragons and a Chraal was pretty good for a band put together on the fly; sadly, the Chraal was tied to the squishy WPoH. The game was pretty short - he routed my LGD, I routed one of his, then the WPoH went running for the exit. With Speed 4, I knew he'd rally before reaching it (I counted 4 potential rally attempts) so I sent the Zak Rak off to hunt him down. Zak Rak caught the Warpriest just after he rallied, and finished him off before the Chraal could do much damage. All that was left to do was kill the last LGD, who had made every Mind Blast save and made morale while out of command and within 6 of my Flayer. I garnered another 30 Warlord Points, and rolled Winged Boots and Lionheart Armor.
Warband 3: Epic Mind Flayer + Lionheart Armor + Winged Boots Epic Lord Soth Beholder + Cloak of Resistance Cadaver Collector + Magic Weapon Green Dragon Dire Rat Goblin Skirmisher
I faced my big brother Jeff on the Hellspike (my map): Lich Necro (his Warlord) Epic Death Slaad Sorcerer on Black Trog Thug Hyena Wardrummer
Jeff started with a 40-pt advantage - I used all four of my magic items. In retrospect, I should have given the Beholder the Boots, for the sheer comedic value as well as strategic reasons.
I let him set up first, and he made a Huge (pun intended) tactical mistake - he put the SoBD in one corner of his start area, and everything else in the opposite corner, confident that the SoBD could handle an Epic Blast from Soth. He didn't notice until after I set up, that Soth could be slid and then move to a place where the SoBD couldn't be seen, while the rest of his warband was bunched up together and ripe for Blasting. Sadly for me, he won init and spread out quick. We sort of switched places - I ended up on his side of the smoke, and he on mine. He pulled off a surprise insta-kill on my Flayer with a scorching ray, passing the AM Eye and SR check! I got even by Blasting the Lich, sliding up the Collector and squishing his Warlord. His Slaad would later Rend the Collector, leaving Soth + Beholder vs Slaad + SoBD. Soth took out the SoBD shortly before time was called, putting me up just enough that Jeff could only win by rending Soth. He missed both attacks, and that was the game. I got another 25 Warlord Points and my Warlord was crowned the Ruler of Meldore!
VERY, VERY FUN scenario, and I strongly recommend running it. | | | |
