| December 2006 New England DDM Open (12/9)
Purpose: To establish the bonds of a bigger DDM community and strengthen the skills of the region's players by broadening our scope from our local stores into wider competition.
Frequency: We will run these Opens approximately every two months, generally offset from the big WotC events like pre-releases and qualifiers. This schedule should give the regional community an excuse to meet almost every month.
Where: TJ Collectibles
160 Main Street Milford MA 01757 www.tjcollect.com Phone:508-473-5874
When: December 9th 2006, starting at 10am. Please show at 9:30am to register.
Expected Duration: We are running an N+1 Swiss tournament with no playoffs. We will be running a miniumum of 5 rounds, with 6 rounds being likely with good turnout (greater than 16 players). This translates into a running time of about 6-7 hours.
Entry Fee: The entry fee is $15 dollars per person.
Prizes: The entry fee will fund a prize pool of 1 booster per person. The top 4 finishers will not receive boosters, but the much more glorious prize of Runelord custom repaints.
Also, everyone will get some old Promo repaint figures. You haven't seen these in a while!
Format:
200 Point Constructed
Standard DDM Constructed Rules and DCI Floor Rules
Remember that maps are part of your warband in the same way tiles were - you must stick with the one you declare at the beginning. We will have some extra maps on hand for those needing them.
DCI Sanctioned: Yes
If you think you will attend, please let me know by posting to this thread, or emailing me at lynchpt@comcast.net. This will save me the effort of hounding you for a committment.
We'll have had plenty of Bloodwar Limited play by this time, but this will be our first big chance to try out the new set in Constructed. Let's see if we can get representation from every NE state this time!
Thanks,

| 5 or more of us will be there if the date doesn't overlap with the start of the basketball season for the kiddies.

| I was worried about the attendance given the time of year, but I was very gratified by a turnout of 17. We would have had 19 but for an untimely car breakdown. There were some interesting experiments, and everyone had a good time.
Here are the Final Standings and warbands (fodder ommitted):
1 George Finkelstein 5-0 ({Orog Warlord}, {Dragonmark Heir of Deneith}, {Chraal}, {Helmed Horror}, Broken Demongate)
2 Rodger Shanklin 4-1 ({Fire Giant Forgepriest}, {Dragonmark Heir of Deneith}, {Urthok the Vicious}, {Snig the Axe}, {Acheron Goblin}s, Field of Ruin)
3 Al Cloutier 4-1 ({Bralani Eladrin}x3, Dragondown Grotto)
4 Roger Mandeville 3-2 ({Storm Silverhand}, {Air Genasi Swashbuckler}, {Valenar Nomad Charger}, {Shadowdancer}, {Storm Archer}, Dragondown Grotto)
5 Tom Livak 3-2 ({Green Slaad} x2, {Orc Champion}, {Orc Wardrummer}, {Gnoll Sergeant}, Dragon Graveyard)
6 Pat Lynch 3-2 ({Fire Giant Forgepriest}, {Dragonmark Heir of Deneith}, {Duergar Champion}, {Urthok the Vicious}, Drow Outpost)
7 James Burgess 3-2 ({Marilith}, {Tiefling Blademaster}, {Orc Wardrummer}, {Orc Champion}, {Orc Wizard}, Map?)
8 Declan Lynch 3-2 ({Marilith}, {Hill Giant Barbarian}, {Orc Wardrummer}, {Tiefling Captain}, Queen Peregrine)
9 Robert Davis 3-2 ({Aspect of Kord}, {Storm Silverhand}, {Living Flaming Sphere}, {Gnome Trickster}, {Free League Ranger}, Field of Ruin)
10 Steven Carr 2-3 ({Fire Giant Forgepriest}, {Chraal}, {Urthok the Vicious}, {Snig the Axe}, {Acheron Goblin}s, Dungeon of Blood)
11 Chris Sparke 2-3 ({Couatl}, {Kolyarut}, {Maug}x2, {Aasimar Favored Soul}, Magma Keep)
12 John Grogan 2-3 ({Fire Giant Forgepriest}, {Dragonmark Heir of Deneith}, {Urthok the Vicious}, {Snig the Axe}, {Acheron Goblin}s, Field of Ruin)
13 James Boyle 2-3 ({Mind Flayer}, {Horned Devil}, {Chraal}, {Duergar Champion}, Mushroom Cavern)
14 Kent Chapman 2-3 ({Solar}, {Kolyarut}, {Dragonmark Heir of Deneith}, Kings Road)
15 Corey Stanhope 2-3 ({Tordek, Dwarf Champion}, {Thundertusk Cavalry}x2, {Dwarf Sergeant}, {Cleric of Moradin}, Kings Road)
16 William Davis 1-4 ({Githyanki Dragon Knight}, {Vlaakith the Lich Queen}, {Orc Wardrummer})
17 Chris Giggey 1-4 ({Tordek, Dwarf Champion}, {Dwarf Ancestor}, {Dwarf Sergeant}, {Iron Golem}, {Dwarf Artificer})

| I can answer briefly for BigGeorge - Dragonmark keeps Orog swinging a few more rounds and can maybe get off a nice sneak attack or two LE beaters run around and kill stuff and generate an early activation advantage
Its his 3rd time running a LE Beater band with Orog (iirc) at the NEO and he's done well each time. I believe they are very solid over all but arent able to consistently win at nationals.

| Congrats to BigGeorge and all those that fared well. Sad this overlapped with the first week of Basketball for some of the kiddies. Wish I could have been there banging heads with you all.

| | Congrats to all who competed but especially to BigGeorge! I love that he continues to use Orog to great success when most people no longer even consider him. When Orog came out, I tried him in several warbands and liked him a lot but have since forgotten about him as newer pieces have come out. | | Charles AKA The Beardless One, Proud Member of Team Amish | |

| | I'm going to have to say that my best moment at the NEO is making Pat Lynch swing on AC 36!!! Tordek, in the first round. I lost to low rolls at the end of the match, (2 fumbles with tordek's first attack on Dragonmark Heir) but in all I thought I played well throughout and I found out why Pat is number one in the nation. | | | |

| Well, we had a great time at the NEO. The whole gang piled into the car (Rodger, Corey, Chris and I) and we drove down, and not a moment too late! we almost didn't make it in time! around 11 we rolled in and signed up.
I was kind of excited.  i like playing at Tj's, seems special to drive so long to get to play. We unpakced quickly and sat down to our first matches. lets go over a quick recap.
round 1: I played against William Davis. We played on my map, Broken demongate, and the fight ended up near the smaller gap on the bottom of the map, near a sacred circle. i made my chraal immune to fire, and the dragon knight came in to base chraal, my army came in from both sides, chraal blocking up the small corridor, orog, helmed, and dragonmark coming around the other side. 1-0.
round 2: I believe i played against Mr. Carr with his Forgepriest/Chraal hot and cold warband. I had a good time with this fight, but i got a little lucky too. Helmed flew over to urthok first chance he got and forced moral on the next round, urthok ran, then ran again, taking him off the board, which put a damper on chraals day. 2-0 P.S: Mr carr is a great guy, we traded with him afterwards and he was very friendly with your group from maine, as was everyone else!
round 3: I played against Rodger Mandville. this match was so close, i could smell defeat. The problem being, i had a flying horse coming at me from all the way across dragondown grotto. Unfortunately, Mr Mandville made a mistake, and charged with his horse, to get the extra plus 2 to hit. it made him hit my helmed much easier, but also made his horsey stop on the death zone, get hit by helmed next round, and then run off the board on the auto morale save. if this had no happened, i don't know how the match would have turned out, i still amost lost! at the end, storm ran off the board, securing my victory 3-0(luckily!)
round 4: I won. I didn't have to play even. Rodger Shanklin and I are very good friends, and have each been playing minis since harbinger. We've played in many, many a non sanctioned event, and not until a couple years ago could we find sanctioned events in our area. we have played eachother....so many times. we eventually made a pact. when we get matched up, first, he won, then I did next time, and so on, for all posterity. it was my turn, so rodger did the fourty five degree shuffle if you will and scooped to me. can't wait until i can do the same for him next time we get matched up.
Round 5: i played Thomas Livak and the controversial Kermit on Roids army. the olympic committee is currently looking into wether green slaad did have performance enhancing drugs in his system during our match. However, Chraal seemed to be, since all of the units i breathed on failed their saves, and thenorog came in to bat cleanup after chraal had exploded. 5-0
So, after collecting my hard earned victory, we had a great time trading and hanging out afterwards. My warband was a little unothrodox given todays metagame, but to answer alepup a bit more, (though ack did admirably, as always) the idea is this, chraal in front, dragonmark and orog behind, helmed horror plays utility. Chraal gets in their face, helmed horror either goes commander hunting, or supports chraal from a flanking position, then orog and his bodygaurd come up from the rear and put a hurting on anything that has already been brought down a peg. in this warbnad with a flank and an orog there i have gotten my bodygaurd up to +16/+11 for 10 magic plus 10 sneak! its not pretty against some warbands, but my band has the toolbox to pull it out!Â
Sorry to put this in this thread, should have put it in my own!

| Very nice report BigGeorge!Â
Congrats on a well earned victory.Â
It is so great to see someone using the Orog Warlord and a LE warband to its upmost effectiveness.Â

| | BigG - thanks for explaining that - I was thinking that your worst matchup would have been a Titan/Ballista Warband. Very interesting to see this in action - thanks for clarifiying the strategy, I think I'll go back and see how the DM has impacted a small Chraal based warband. I suppose one single one really does make a brutal and strong opponent to block access. | | One of these days WoTC will update their tournament page when I'm in the top 5... they never seem to do when I'm in that bracket :( My Collection My DDM Website And My Trade Refs Be a part of the UK DDM Forum
