| The boy and I drove up to AFnG in Cary for the Prerelease. Darkstryder from Charlotte won the tournament, with other Queen city denizens taking the top spots.
My pull Valenar
Nomad Charger (R), Marilith (R), Mezzoloth, Gnome Trickster, Soulknife
Infiltrator, Elf Warmage, Celestial Giant Stag Beetle, Phoera,
Hammerer, Skeletal Reaper, Soldier of Bytopia, Harmonium Guard, Free
League Ranger, Hero of Vahalla, Fiendish Snake, Greenspawn Sneak
My Warband: Valenar
Nomad Charger (R), Marilith (R), Mezzoloth, Free League Ranger, Hero of
Vahalla, Fiendish Snake, Greenspawn Sneak (I was tempted but the boy
talked me out of it to go with Gnome Trickster and Hammerer instead of
the Mezzoloth, but I'm glad I went with the war band I did). Map:
Broken Demongate
First Round : Scruffydude7 His Band:
Pitfiend, Air Genasi Swashbuckler, hammerer, Orc Wizard, Greenspawn,
Acheron Goblin, Kobold Monk. Map: Dragons Graveyard I won map
initiative and took BDG, Scruffydude7 won side and took the good side. He
placed his greenspawn in the back corner. I placed mine on the sacred
circle victory area. I stayed ahead on points in the early rounds,
keeping my Greenspawn alive the first turn, while stomping his
(unfortunately not with the Hero of Vahalla). Third round found the
Valenar trying to hit and run the Orc Wizard(miss on a 1 with Valenar,
crit by the orc meant time to rout instead of the victory points he
should have been picking up that round). Around the end of round 5 the
Marilith decided to rout, which was okay as I wanted her away from the
Pitfiend being close to death. She had done her job of slicing and
dicing various minor figures, but then the next round she also
continued her rout which did me in. I needed to take down the Pitfiend
and just couldn't do it. A fun game. 0-1
Second Round : bye
1-1, lots of folks dropped after the first round, which I found odd.
Not getting a titan seemed to annoy some people, while others just
seemed distracted (Halloween parties to go to?).
Third Round Eiznoragad Band Maug, Ice Devil, Free League Ranger, Doomguard, Greenspawn, Shadowdancer. Map Broken DG I
win side and take good side (Marilith, Mezzolith and Hero in the close
start area). Post the Green sneak in the deep corner victory area. Eiznoragad places his greenspawn in the central victory area. First turn sees both
greenspawns dead and everyone around the choke point except the Valenar
who has ridden the length of the board just beyond the evil side second
entrance. Both FLR were back in the back field having taken care of
Greenspawn. Round two finds the Valenar engaging the Free League Ranger
(I missed his human foe, which should have taken him to morale save),
but that kept him engaged and back. His Maug and Ice Devil tried to
take down the Marilith, however the Marilith got two back to back
activations on the Ice Devil which sliced it up fine (10 for 12 hits )
with the help of the Mezzoloth. Marilith makes her save after the
tender ministrations of the maug. The interesting tidbit for the game
was Hero of Vahalla hitting Shadowdancer to get savage frenzy and she
dodge it, but as it did not void the hit, he got his frenzy. Mopping up
then involved taking down the Maug, at which point Eiznoragad conceeded. A
well played game, key was Eiznoragad not getting his spells off with the ice
demon. 2-1
Fourth Round Thomas Band: Solar, Elf Warmagex2, Greensneak, Fiendish Snake. Map Broken Demongate He deferred map side selection to me so I set up as before on good side. Round 1 saw the demise of Greensneaks and standard movement on my part. Round
2 he wins initiative, sound lances the Marilith bringing her to 95 hp
so the Solar can killing arrow her. She make her save leaving the Solar
rather vulnerable. Valenar drives by the unactivated EWM and drags her
attention off to be shocking grasped and routed for his trouble. Round 3 me winning initiative
(initiative surge) and slicing and dicing the solar to morale check,
which it fails on a 2 and routs off the board. 3-1
Fifth Round: Legend (Forkedmoon's son) Band: Ghaele Brilani, Copper Dragon, Thundertusk, Phoera, Harmonium Guard, Maug. Map Magma Keep We
play on Magma Keep, which suits me as I have one beater with a big
base, while he has two, not the best set up on this map. Konor set up
on the side with access to the hallway. I plunked the greenspawn in the
side victory area where he was hidden and stayed the whole match. Konor
did a great job managing his band even with the problems he had with
his bases. I made the save with the Marilith to avoid slow attack from
the copper, but Marilith failed the first morale save and that did the
band in. 3-2 and out of prize support due to the bye.
All in
all a fun day, I got an excellent pull from my standpoint. The Marilith
showed its fickleness in two of the games. I really wished for a higher
commander, but didn't do bad. The boy played a no commander band with
the Lilend using her remove fear spells. He also went 3-2 with
Thundertusk, Muag, Hammerer, Halforc spy, Kobold Monk and Gnoll Barb. He wanted to
fit the Demonic Gnoll Priestess but couldn't. | | Champion of Savage Bard (Unearthed Arcana: Bard Variant) Bloodwars Called shot (vindicated) Demonic Gnoll Adept/Priestess Old Jagermonster Saying: Any Plan vere you luz your hat iz a BAD Plan.

| Nice write up! You played an great game, and you would have won our match if the dice had been more favorable for you.

| The second morale save would have kept me in the game. Your Pit fiend was waiting to finish the job, so I don't know that the outcome was determined by a couple morale saves. You persevered through the tough part of the game for you, until the tide turned to where I was in dire straights. An enjoyable game. Over the whole day my luck was average (Solar routing on a 2 after the tender ministrations of the Marilith).

| I played in the Cary prerelease as well.
I played Githyanki Dragon Knight, Harmonium Guard, Shadowdancer, Soulknife Infiltrator, Acheron Goblin x2, Kobold Monk. My map was Drow Outpost. The only piece that didn't make the cut that was in serious consideration was a Medium Copper Dragon.
First match was against Thomas, who was playing Solar, Elf Warmage x2, Green Dragonspawn Sneak, and Fiendish Snake on the Broken Demongate. He won map, I won side and deferred, wanting to see where the sneak was going to land. He took the outside and set up the sneak on the sacred circle area, so I set up my dragon to kill it on the first turn (it did). We closed cautiously as I used my dragon to harrass and eventually kill his warmages before they did too much damage. Meanwhile my sneak attackers were keeping the Solar busy (and chipping in a little damage). When the Solar eventually got free of them, he was too badly damaged and went down to the dragon. 1-0.
Second round was against Legend (his warband is above), on his map. The dragon knight went to the top of the map to harass the copper dragon and was followed by maug, the harmonium guards moved toward each other in the center. The rest of the warbands met at the bottom of the map, with the shadowdancer routing Legend's phoera before jumping away from thundertusk to go support the dragon knight at the top of the map. In the end, the maug missed a few too many attacks and the game ended in my favor. 2-0.
Third round was against scruffydude (his warband is also above), on his map (dragon graveyard). I set up to avoid too many early fireballs, though he got one off on the second round on my goblins and commander. First round I moved my dragon knight out to kill his sneak in the shared victory area and jumped my shadowdancer out to rout his kobold monk that tried to move in at the end of the round. That put me up on activations and points very early. I tried and failed to kill his orc wizard before he could get dolorous blow off on his pit fiend. After we hammered on each others support for a while, it came down to pit fiend vs. dragon knight + harmonium guard. His pit fiend did get a late critical hit on the knight because of dolorous blow, but the knight passed morale and used his superior speed and the early point lead to stay away and win on points. We played a LOT of rounds for a timed match, with a 105 point piece still on the board when I went over 200. 3-0.
Fourth round I played another of the Charlotte crowd, David, who was playing Storm, Forgepriest, Dwarven Sniper, and Skeletal Reaper. We played on my map, he chose the outpost side. I manuevered early to get some decent damage on the forgepriest with my sneak attackers, but they didn't last long. The forgepriest was flying (courtesy of Storm) so my dragon knight couldn't really play hit and run as effectively as I might have liked. Storm moved up to heal the giant and my soulknife managed to rout her with a ranged attack, but she rallied on her next activation. In the end his titan based mine on the bridge. That's not a good matchup for the dragon, with lower hp, AC, and attack bonuses. I could have pulled it out with some better than average dice (needed 3 hits in my last 4 attacks, at 9+ to hit, and to win init at a 4:3 CR disadvantage - not impossible, but not likely). I didn't get them and he finished me off. 3-1.
Fifth round was against Kirk, who had Air Genasi Swashbuckler, Free League Ranger, Acheron Goblin, Dwarf Sniper, Kobold Monk, Centaur Warhulk, and Red Hand Sorcerer. We played on my map, I had the outpost side. He got unlucky in the first round, when I won init and killed his sniper in two activations, with a crit from the dragon knight to open the game. He moved his warband out, keeping it pretty tightly bunched, leaving my dragon without much of a target for round 2. I moved my monk out at the end of the round to snag victory points in the shared victory area. He moved his sorcerer up to get off some nicely placed lightning bolts, taking advantage of his commander effect. I raced my soulknife and shadowdancer over to attack the sorcerer, but the soulknife missed, and the sorcerer made morale. That left them vulnerable to a centaur counterattack, which was a crit, killing the soulknife instantly. Third round I got a breath weapon off that hit the bulk of his warband, missing only the kobold and genasi (the genasi was dueling my goblins - and winning, unsurprisingly). I moved my harmonium guard up to attack the free league ranger, and won that duel, leaving him without a commander. After that, the dragon routed both the centaur and the genasi, ending the game. 4-1, good for 2nd place.
Congratuations to Darkstryder on his win, and thanks to all the Charlotte players who came up and made this a much better event than it might have otherwise been. Hope to see you guys again soon.

| Yes Wish it was a very good game we had, and I was totally shocked when you rolled those last two attacks and the dice showed 1's. Take some pride in that you were the only one that day that even damaged my Storm Silverhand. Also I do not mind being associated with the Charlotte Crew since Underground Games in Charlotte is our store away from home, but my wife and I live in Columbia S.C. | | Agent of Amish | |

| I didn't know either, until I recognized your warband from HidesfromHurricanes' tournament report.
EC is still going strong, by the way, over on that other site.

| HFH,
I had a great time playing you and your son. It's good to be able to put faces with names. Your marilith just chopped my Ice Devil to pieces. I knew my only chance was going to be the slow attack, but you passed the save and then won initiative the next round. My match against Perry was my favorite of the day. The 40 tile points his Half-orc Spy collected turned out to be decisive. Only two figs were left on the board, His Spy and my Shadowdancer.
Everyone,
Did one of you guys accidently scoop up one of my boosters? It had a Chasme, a Mezzoloth and some other commons and uncommons I don't remember. It was all of the stuff I didn't use in my warband, a booster plus a few. If so, just let me know and we can work something out. Thanks. | | D&D Minis wednesdays at 6pm in Charlotte, NC at Underground Games. Sanctioned tournament third Sat. of every month. Dagaronzie on WotC Boards.

The boy and I enjoyed meeting you as well. I think you had gotten your experience with your band by the time the boy played you. I don't think that the ice storm would have impacted my band that much with the demon and devil immunities. Sorry about the minis. I saw a booster where we played, but it looked like trash stuffed in it. I think it stayed there until we left.

| I will be over at AFnG again tonight and will ask if they found a booster after the tournament. I don't think they did since I was there until closing and do not remember one being mentioned.
Also in case anyone is interested there will be a booster draft at 11 AM on Saturday using the Blood Wars boosters at AFnG. The early start time is so we can finsih before the D&D Game day begins at 5 PM. Woo-Hoo skirmish in the morning followed by RPG in the evening.
