| With my terrible horrible no good very bad pulls... i was 2-2 and an initiative away from 3-1. I put up a what would you have played post in the regular forums... i thik i did as best i could with the band i pulled...
My warband: Chasme shadow dancer war mage hammerer free league greenspawn acheron gobo living flame sphere
KEEP OF THE FALLEN KINGS
yes 2 and 2 and almost 3-1...
round 1: My map, lost. one of my best friends who drove down from WA to play pulled a marilith, maug, hammerer, harmonium, and hellcat... basically I put the marilith to sleep and had her at one hit away from half, had the maug below half, and killed the hellcat through empowered ring of blades and shocking grasp... I thought the marilith hit for 15 not 10 so he had a bit easier time than he should have and i couldnt kill his harmonium with the shadow dancer before the marilith came back to kill her... i killed his hellcat and hammerer... not a good start
round 2; my map, won played an inexperienced player... had a mezzoloth, blue spawn, hippogrif, air genie swash, green spawn, red hand sorc... played the torch and scorch with the flame sphere and a fire burst on his hippogrif and tied down the red hand with shadowdancer and flame sphere the next round while my chasme put his mezzoloth to sleep so my hammerer could hammer and the free league put some dmg on the air genie somehow... came back up with the warmage for more flame burst and a sonic lance to put the game away... only lost hammerer, gobo, sneak, and flame sphere... big win
round3; my map yet again Somehow won map init again... he had a firegiant forge priest, branali eladrin, skeltal reaper, free league, dwarf sniper... sniper started scouted so i didn't scout my greenspawn... he moved the firegiant to center on the second round and I moved everyone for sleep sleep sleep please sleep game... His branali and free league took the bottom road... i sent my flame sphere alone to deal with them... i learned the hard way that the branali has magic ranged att and resist 10 fire... big mistake... shadow jumped his free league round two and put the fire giant to sleep!!! instead of rushing him though i let him stay asleep as he had no figures within 2 rounds of waking him up... i killed his free league and put the hammerer greenspawn and gobo on the dwarf... had to use empowered shocking grasp on the skeletal reaper so that was too bad... after that I set about setting up to take on the big guy... dwarf was one hit away from moral branali had taken 10, fire giant had taken 25 (free league and a hammer charge), and i had only lost my flame sphere... out activated him with fodder and bring up my shadow dancer to flank... auto hit wiht chasme to wake, sound lanced with warmage, won init, hit once with chasme, hit on flank with shadow dancer, he critted to kill my chasme cleaved onto shadow dancer but i defensive rolled... got him down to 25 hp by the end of the round and based with the warmage... if i win init i auto kill the giant can route dwarf and only have the branali left to deal with... but i don't win... he kills the warmage and cleaves to free league... If i won init i would have won... but didn't
round4; she chose to use my map! she has solar, dragon marked, air genie, gargoyle. Solar gets a easy shot at a screening gobo round one but thats it... i move up behind the wall and leave my flame sphere and hammerer out front... at the end of round 2 i move my chasme to base of solar and put dragonhier to sleep, shadow jump and hit solor, and put 30 on dragon heir with hammerer... win init and hit once with chasme, once with shadow dance and combo free league, flame sphere, and war mage on air genie... solor hits once on chasme, hits shadow dancer (defensive roll) and hits shadow again (i think)... manage to clean up the air genie this round and move up war mage for the big one... she kills chasme and morals the shadow dancer (made it!), i empowered shock grasp and shadowdance down the solar!!! use the hammerer and flame sphere to finish off dragon heir the next round for win!!!
not too impressive really but did well even with mistakes (marilith does 10 not 15, flame sphere can't hurt branali, wasting empower on ring of blades first 2 games) but luckily my oppenents made a few too (too spread out during the firegiant game, attacking my flaming sphere too much, and not utilizing slaying arrow (though i made that very very hard to do)...
If I had won one init i would have been 3-1 and with my rag tag i can't really complain too much... i got a thundertusk, 2 uncommons, and 2 commons as prize support...
my friend james who i played in the first round placed one behind me (after his opponent lieing to him about the ice devils slow not lasting till end of round) at 9 or 10 of 16 i think...
my best friend who drove down with James finally took 1st... going 4-0 with a marilith, kolyrut, free league, trickster, gnoll priestess warband, second was a hellcat, kolyrut, maug. Third was the firegiant band i almost beat. fourth was horned devil band that i can't remember...
other stats: 3 firegiant pulled, 1 vlaakith, 1 gith knight, 1 ice devil, 2-3 kolyruts, 1 solar, 2 thunder tusks, 2 mariliths, 1 horned devil, 2 hellcats. NO pit fiend, no storms.
Impressions: marilith is the piece in sealed. Warmage, maug, and tricksters are great uncommons. Fire giant is impressive but didn't place too well overall. Hellcat ok, horned devil good, solar is suprisingly squishy... Kolyrut is a great addition to Lg.

| I went 3-1
My warband was: Horned Devil Maug Dragonmark Shadowdancer Kobold Monk Fiendish Snake (commander 0)
(don't have the map with me, the one with all the energy resists on it) 1st round: bye 1-0
2nd round: On my map played the only Ice Devil at the tourney. First round immuned Horned Devil to cold, brought. Second Round D Door'd to base his Red Hand sorrcerror and Hammerer away from his Maug and Ice Devil. Third round hit Red Hand, it makes morale, Shadow Dancer shadow jumps into flank position for the kill. Enemy Maug engages my Horned Devil while my Maug tangles up the Ice Devil within 4 of the Horned Devil. Eventually with stuns and almost always hitting with the Horned Devil and Maug it dies, shortly after the hammerer goes down and with victory points i win the match. 2-0
3rd Round: On my map again This was going to be tough, he had a Fire Giant and the Lord of Blades. LOB chooses Construct for his bane weapon (ultimately his downfall) and i get Kobold in a good position for victory points. Hammerer after taking the 25 from Horned Devil got off a Charge while under the LOB CMFX and crits for lots of damage. Fire Giant moves into attack range for Horned Devil on a charge hits and HD makes his morale save. Maug moves up into combat with Fire Giant and allows Shadow Dancer to shadow jump into a sneak attack in which i crit and take down a stunned Fire Giant. He conncedes shortly after. 3-0
4th Round: Played on cave/forest map with waterfall This would decide who would get first in the tourney, he had Marilith, Kolyarut, Demonic Gnoll Priestess, Gnome Trickster, and Free Leauge Ranger. I go first and position the Kobold behind the waterfall thinking 22 AC and Conceal 11 would defend me against any ranged attack from the Free Leauge, i was wrong. Demonic Gnoll casts blindsight on Free Leauge and he rolls a 13 beating my ac by 1 so the Kobold fails his save and routes off the board. Horned Devil got his D Door off and was able to position himself just far enough that Marlith couldn't get to the HD without having only 1 attack, but Kolyarut was able to see him and enervated him. Maug and shadow dancer move out of the cave to engage Kolyarut and Demonic Gnoll. Shadow moves into victory tiles and gets the points. Maug gets ganked by Marilith and Kolyarut and goes down later. Now i'm down by like 64 points when he kills the Shadow dancer but that same turn I hit the Marilith again and get the stun off, the Marilith is now down to 55 Hit points and would only need to take another 5 for Morale. Unfortunatly the Demonic gnoll gets her stun off after I roll a 5 for the save 13 total after being enervated. Then i charge the unstunned Marilith hoping that it would route off the board, I needed a 6, I rolled a 1. Time was called and I'm alright having a game come down to a dice roll it showed that both players played well and that it was evenly matched warbands. Final 3-1 4th place in the tournament In my two prize boosters i got a Fire Giant and a Marilith so not winning wasn't too bad. | | I hope you can see this because im doing it as hard as I can - Ignignokt

| FINALLY!!!!
4 AND 0.
Maralith Free League Gnoll Priestess Gnome trickster Kolyarut
I've never had to fight so hard for wins. There was a LOT of tough competition today, but thanks to good pulls, good rolls, and a ton of luck, I finally pulled off a tournament win.
game 1- had to beat off a gith dragon rider w/ the maralith
game 2- paralyzed the forgepriest w/ the kolyarut, brought in maralith for clean up.
game 3- somehow managed to rout the hellcat and mezzoloth before time ran out.
game 4- I still don't know...just a lucky (failed) save to stun the horned devil before my maralith took enough damage to rout.
total damage against the marilith in all 4 games= 75
Sadly to say, much of my success wasn't in my own die rolls, but the failed saves of others. Still, I think there was a lot of good cohesion in this band. Too bad I'll never be able to play it again. | | my email: michaeltaylor@alloymail.com my have/want list http://www.maxminis.com/hwlist.asp?user=hung4treason Trades Completed: Jai, zombie_man2k4, BelenUmeria, Xikilm, thanatos, Meds, Shimeron, Iksander, mixmaster, Closet dork, BruenoB, Ack, HockeyFan, Nixlord, mickey mouse, oldben, TheChuck, AnarionZelle, Keoki, roonechr, Raland, DreamstalkerWolf, Alepulp, azuretide Trades Pending: OamuTheMonk, Deshma2635, leirbagsajoir

| I went 3-1, and came in fifth.
My pulls mediocre at best:
Rares: Centaur War Hulk Succubus
Uncommons: Gnome Trickster Orc Wizard Living Flaming Sphere Ethereal Marauder Dwarf Sniper Green Slaad
Commons Kobold Monk Fiendish Snake Harmonium Guard x2 Soldier of Bytopia Hero of Valhalla Hammerer Skeletal Reaper
...so fairly poor rares, little in the way of solid beaters, but good tech.
From those I assembled this warband: 58 Centaur War Hulk 41 Green Slaad 27 Gnome Trickster 24 Orc Wizard 27 Harmonium Guard (Com 3) 16 Hammerer 05 Kobold Monk
Map = Teleport Temple
7 activations, 198 points
My strategy: Put dolorous blow on the Centaur, then make everyone invisible. Use the teleporters to open up charge lanes for the centaur and hope I can do enough damage to force morale saves. The teleports also give the green slaad more room to maneuver to cast its randomly determined spells. The invisible kobold monk is my tile grabber. The hammerer is my secondary beater. The harmonium guard isn't the greatest commander, but I was relatively happy that I had him as a commander 3 - a good rating in this set.
ROUND 1 I faced a player fairly new to the game, who also had a bunch of bad pulls. I believe his warband was something like the Air Genasi, Bralani Eladrin, and Maug as his key pieces. I was able to take out a lot of the support, losing only the orc wizard and hammerer in the process. 1-0
One mistake I made in round 1 was putting the commander in the invisibility sphere, which crippled his ability to rally troops. I was careful in future rounds to exclude him from the area of the spell.
ROUND 2 I faced a very strong warband, with lots of good hitters - including the Hellcat, Kolyarut, Mezzoloth, with the Free Ranger guy as a commander and some other decent support. I simply couldn't do the damage needed to take him out. My Centaur War Hero quickly dropped, and without him the rest of my band didn't have nearly the damage potential needed to pull out a victory. 1-1
Person I played against in round 2 was a skilled competitor, and ended up coming in 2nd in the tournament, I believe.
ROUND 3 I faced the Solar/Dragonmarked Hero/Gargoyle/Air Genasi warband mentioned earlier. The pilot of this warband has a habit of playing and beating me in every tournament we've been in in the past year; could I break the curse?
As it turns out, I could. I made the save on the slaying arrow, and was able to remove the supporting pieces while avoiding the Solar. By the time it got engaged in the fight, I had enough pieces available (having lost only the Hammerer) to pull out a victory. 2-1
ROUND 4 This time I faced the player of the Ice Devil, who also had a Maug, that Red Hand hobgoblin commander with all the lightning bolts, a doomguard, a hammerer, and goblin fodder piece. This is the first and only map I failed the map initiative roll, and was forced to play on the King's Road map.
He did a good job targeting me with spells, seriously weakening my pieces. However, I was able to drive him off the shared victory area and keep him from it long enough to rack up 30 victory points over him; this, combined with some secondary units I took out, gave me the victory in points when time was called. Had the match gone even one round longer, he would have taken out my centaur with his ice devil and other units, and taken the victory himself.
***
Thinking back, I'm reasonably happy with the warband I built out of what I had pulled. The hammerer's slow speed crippled it, but I didn't have many alternatives in that price range. The dolorous blow spell from the Orc Wizard was utterly useless; the only time I ever rolled an 18-20 with the centaur was against a Maug. Surprisingly, the battering ram was probably his best spell, since it did guaranteed damage and allowed me to strategically reposition a piece. The Gnome Trickster was a bit more useful overall; in the last round I even got lucky with the distract spell on the Ice Devil, forcing it to become Inhibited. I rolled overall pretty well for the Green Slaad's spells, and did pretty good with morale saves in particular.
The MVP of my band was probably the Kobold Monk, who happily racked up 40 or so victory points each game, more than paying for himself.
As the 5th place finisher, I got first pick in minis from several other boosters that were opened and shared out among all the non-top-4 people. It was a tough choice, but I picked the Ice Devil over the Marilith (the top 2 picks from those available) on the theory that 2 Ice Devils will be more useful in my D&D game than 2 Mariliths. Two cases are coming from gameoutfitter next week, though, so we'll see what I get and what I need.
