Well the 1000pt tournament was a blast.  We had 23 people entered.Â

Just as a reminder, here were the rules:
1. 1000 pts and icons are legal
2. Each player brings a map and the two maps are joined together to form one big battle area
3. 12 figure limit not including minions
4.  Occupying victory areas was worth 50 pts a round.
5. 60 minute time limit.

The winner would receive a complete set of Blood War!!

Two players fielded a single CRD.  Three players (including myself) fielded a pair of GBDs.  There were a few multi-archmage bands with Elminster.  We played 5 rounds and I was lucky enough to reach the finals.  The other two players who had GBDx2 ended up squaring off against each other in round one and this ultimately knocked one of them out of the running for the prize.

In the first round I faced a LG band with a pair of Bahamuts and an Epic Moradin.  The opponent brought the Teleport Temple map.  I had the GBD map.  My two GBDs dropped one of the Bahamuts in two rounds and then beat on the other one.  By round four both Bahamuts were dead and the opponent surrendered.

In round two I faced a young kid who had a mix of CG - Epic Archmage, Epic Kord, Epic Storm Archer, Frenzied Berserker, Elminster, Dark Traveller.  He used the Tomb of P map.  The kid got excited when his Kord rolled a critical on one of my Dragons for 90 damage.  But it didn't last long.  I shot two acid breaths hitting all his pieces except the FB and it was over about 5 minutes later.

In round three I faced a GBD mixed with a Formorian and an Epic Mordenkainen and a pair of Spider Swarms. We both were using the GBD map and this made all the pools on both maps linked. I was able to crush and stun Mordy and hit him and the swarms with the acid lines.  Then I focused both GBDs on his single GBD and eventually two on one prevailed.  The Formorian only got one swing in as I had managed to use the pools to get the GBD fight down on the end of the maps so the Formorian couldn't get down there in time.

In round four I faced an Epic Tordek, Epic Mordenkainen, Elminster, Archmage x2, Crowx2.  He used the Tomb of P map.  I moved into the middle and sat on a victory area.  He didn't score victory points in round one so now he had to come to me.  I waited him out as I didn't want to rush in and get swords dropped on me.  Eventually I moved up when his pieces were close enough for the line breaths.  I routed Elminster off before he was able to use any swords.  The two archmages put all four swords on the one GBD.  Tordek moved in and hit it for some more damage followed by some SS spells.  Then I moved by GBDs to flank Tordek between them.  I fired off my remaining breath weapons and dropped the archmages and Mordy and then double teamed Tordek.  The one GBD was about to drop but my opponent surrendered anyway because Tordek was almost gone too and after that he had no pieces able to take on the remaining full strength GBD.

So I watched the other semi final match between a pair of GBDs and a CRD.  I knew from my own play testing that a single CRD will lose to a pair of GBDs and sure enough that held true.  So now the finals.  The winner would receive a complete set of Blood War.  My opponent and I looked at each other's warbands - four GBDs - 2 on 2.  We both knew it would come down to luck as there was no way of out-strategizing your opponent.  I wanted to try it so I convinced him to play it out.  But after one round I knew inevitably it would come down to the player who got the better dice rolls.  We decided to call it a draw and split the prize.  We rolled off and took turns drafting one figure at a time.

Interesting format. I wonder how the dragons would hold up in the 1000-point variant in the Miniatures Handbook. (My guess is that they'd do even better, because the little guys would just get creamed.)

Im really looking forward to being on the Dragon side of the dragon rampage events at SoCal - seeing what people can come up with to beat the dragons. Should be very interesting.
