Hey guys a report from the NORCAL Qualifier held yesterday. I won, but the true winner of the day seemed to be the Fire Giant (pulled on in the draft and the only undefeated was a nasty FGFP with lich queen). Played some really great matches against some quality folks and the atmosphere at Game Castle was as always great.
Swiss 4-1 My WB My Map : Drow Outpost
Solar
Thundertusk
 GS Sneak
Hero of V
Dwarf Sniper
Round 1 Map : Dragon Graveyard Mezzo Ice Devil Free League Swashbuckler Filler We Played on his map and he pretty mush owned me as his Mezzo made the slaying arrow save and my Thundertusk missed all attacks (against a Kobie monk). Ice devil pretty much cleared up the solar and thundertusk with ease. 0-1
Round 2 Fire Giant Maug and I forget what else We played on my map and he was a very inexperienced player. Although he played well a little more practice and age should see him well. I managed to kill the Maug with Slaying Arrow and the Fire Giant missed an attack but killed the Solar which then was cleaned up by the calvary. 1-1
Round 3 (Derry) Hell Kitty Slaad Doom Guard Harmonium BodyGuard Filler We played on my map and as always it was a tough play against the champ. Derry played with precision but unfortunately for him my Solar had no problem finding his kitty. Senoir Slaad had no problem casting conceal and I killed the Bodyguard with a slaying arrow sending my calvary around the bottom of the map to flank tieing up the slaad away from my solar. 2-1
Round 4 Fire Giant and the rest I forget (should take notes) By far the most strategic match and the most fun. He over extended his fire giant letting my guys kill his commander and dominate the bottom of the map by using the pit to fire on his fire giant with no chance of retribution. After whittling his fire giant down to 20 hp and him being 5 points away from victory and on a victory area I won initiative and finaly closed with the Solar on the Fire Giant. I actually hit and won the match by 5 points. 3-1
Round 5 I totaly forget what John05 played, other than the Warhulk, as I spent to whole match worrying about my tie breakers and how I had to win to be in. 4-1
In the draft I played Lawful.
My WB My map : Drow Outpost
Fire Giant (lucky!)
Large Water
Kolyarut
Gobbie
Harmonium
1st match against John05 This match went well with him blocking the bridge but no confirmed kills as his Maug was never able to put the finishing touches on my Fire Giant or water elem. John Played well never letting my Fire Giant Cleave but he just couldn't match my HP or damage output.
2nd Match Against Ian I made the Fire giants slide save for the pit and all was going well except for the dang Warmage dealing massive damage. I made a bad mistake bringing my Kolyarut in to kill mage giving the Calvary an AoO near a pit square Which he failed. I was worried but the continuous missing of the thundertusk saved my behind. Once the calvary fell and the mage was out of spells I moved in the for the kill. Ignoring the gnome(with conceal) I concentrated fire(literaly) on his Free League and Harmonium.
All in all some after action review revealed that I made many mistakes in the finals, trying to paralyze a Maug, provoking AoO near a pit, etc... But had a forgiving enough WB to make mistakes and not pay overly for them. Good Job to all and it was a lot of fun

I was the 5-0 in Swiss.  My warband was 3 activations: Fire Giant Forgepriest, Vlaakith and Dragonmarked Heir of House Dandelion.  I played on the Broken Demongate map.

I was a touch surprised at how easily I managed to progress in the swiss matches given the limited number of activations in my band.ÂIn those 5 matches, I made 0 morale checks, and I only lost 1 creature (The DHoHD was lost when I faced off against an opposing Vlaakith - BZZZT).

Although the FGFP was a solid piece, the real champion of the band was the DHoHD.ÂIt allowed the FGFP to do his thing without taking the morale check.ÂI feel that I could have obtained similar results with a Marilith (or Pit Fiend) in place of the FGFP.ÂI was worried at the start of the day because of the gang tackles that a 3 figure warband might face, but in the end, the DHoHD’s bodyguard effect made the FGFP too durable for the few gang tackles I did see to get him over the hump.

The dice did favor me during the day, and I did manage to capitalize on a few bad errors made by foes.ÂOf note were a first turn fireball against a gnome trickster band where the opposing player allowed me to go first, and a fair number of instances where opponent’s decided to use ‘martial arts movie techniques’ to attack my FGFP – attacking it with his creatures 1 at a time (to avoid cleave) instead of all at once.Â

In the finals, I had a bad draft.ÂI had the option of great support pieces in evil, or strong beaters in good.ÂUnfortunately, you need a combination of tech to support the beaters.ÂI was slaughtered in a match versus Ianb when the Solar, Arcadian Griffon and Centaur War Hulk that I was using failed to land a single meaningful hit in the first round of engagement.ÂThis allowed him to take his multi-medium hitter warband and beat the snot out of my Solar.ÂOnce it fell, the battle was over.Â

The Solar really needed to have an AC in the ~23 range for it to be worth the points… as it stands, it dies too fast to be useful, especially if it misses on that second or third attack.ÂI was praying that I’d get a chance to draft a bodyguard to protect it, but the opportunity never arose…

On the day I was 5-1, and I took home 6 boosters worth of figures (including 7 rares - FGFP, Vlaakith, Solar, Arcadian Griffon, Centaur Warhulk, Chasme, Lillend) for the cost of ~2.5 boosters.Â

To top it off, it was the day after my bachelor party, so I was impressed with my ability to recognize dice, much less my ability to sweep the swiss rounds.
