I was the 5-0 in Swiss. My warband was 3 activations: Fire Giant Forgepriest, Vlaakith and Dragonmarked Heir of House Dandelion. I played on the Broken Demongate map.  I was a touch surprised at how easily I managed to progress in the swiss matches given the limited number of activations in my band.ÂIn those 5 matches, I made 0 morale checks, and I only lost 1 creature (The DHoHD was lost when I faced off against an opposing Vlaakith - BZZZT).  Although the FGFP was a solid piece, the real champion of the band was the DHoHD.ÂIt allowed the FGFP to do his thing without taking the morale check.ÂI feel that I could have obtained similar results with a Marilith (or Pit Fiend) in place of the FGFP.ÂI was worried at the start of the day because of the gang tackles that a 3 figure warband might face, but in the end, the DHoHD’s bodyguard effect made the FGFP too durable for the few gang tackles I did see to get him over the hump.  The dice did favor me during the day, and I did manage to capitalize on a few bad errors made by foes.ÂOf note were a first turn fireball against a gnome trickster band where the opposing player allowed me to go first, and a fair number of instances where opponent’s decided to use ‘martial arts movie techniques’ to attack my FGFP – attacking it with his creatures 1 at a time (to avoid cleave) instead of all at once.  In the finals, I had a bad draft.ÂI had the option of great support pieces in evil, or strong beaters in good.ÂUnfortunately, you need a combination of tech to support the beaters.ÂI was slaughtered in a match versus Ianb when the Solar, Arcadian Griffon and Centaur War Hulk that I was using failed to land a single meaningful hit in the first round of engagement.ÂThis allowed him to take his multi-medium hitter warband and beat the snot out of my Solar.ÂOnce it fell, the battle was over.  The Solar really needed to have an AC in the ~23 range for it to be worth the points… as it stands, it dies too fast to be useful, especially if it misses on that second or third attack.ÂI was praying that I’d get a chance to draft a bodyguard to protect it, but the opportunity never arose…  On the day I was 5-1, and I took home 6 boosters worth of figures (including 7 rares - FGFP, Vlaakith, Solar, Arcadian Griffon, Centaur Warhulk, Chasme, Lillend) for the cost of ~2.5 boosters.  To top it off, it was the day after my bachelor party, so I was impressed with my ability to recognize dice, much less my ability to sweep the swiss rounds. |
