We had a total of 7 players show up for our Epic tournament tonight, including Beer Baron who wins the award for longest distance travelled. He is visiting us here in Halifax from Victoria - a total distance of ~6000km.

Due to our generous donation of 88 lbs of food to "Feed Nova Scotia" last week, we got two movie passes which were being used as first prize for tonight's tournament.

Well - it wasn't the most exciting night (for me anyway) except for a cry that went out when Epic Tordek got swallowed by a purple worm at the next table.

In the first round, I faced our visitor, Beer Baron, on Field of Ruin. I managed to take out a good deal of his fodder at range using the Bralani and Graycloak before anything significant happened. When Drizzt finally made a run for it towards Elminster he got a whole whack of Mordy Swords for his trouble. After two rounds, both he and Elminster went down and the Archmages scattered taking potshots at Guen while collecting tile points. The game was conceded when there was no way for him to catch up on points and Guen was very low on HP.

In the second round, I faced Zak's griffon cavalry and purple worm. Both bands went invisible on the first turn but I managed to use Mystra's Curse on the Griffon before that happened. After meeting near the shared victory area, I managed to drop 4 swords on the worm and 2 on the griffon. Again, the archmages scattered and waited for the worm to die. This game was called on time and I was ahead on points since we both got tile points every round. If we had gone one more round, I probably would have lost an Archmage but I would have taken the Griffon Cavalry with me to go over 500.

Third round was against Bonelock who was using a band I had suggested to him earlier in the day. I was quite happy to see that he had won both of his first two matches with it. As I had never used my Solar, I was suprised to notice that although the Solar had blindsight, it did not have spell resistance. I managed to win my map so I was able to keep safe from the Solar in the forest. After the first couple rounds, I had managed to take out the Kolyarut and his scout losing nothing in return. I also managed to control the shared victory area which made him come to me. I dropped 6 swords on the Solar when it made a rather aggressive move. At that point, he only had 2 rounds to use it and couldn't take out the fleeing archmages so he conceded.

Overall, I think the archmages make a fairly strong band, but it was a rather unsatisfying night because it just feels wrong to win by running away. At least the 4x Archmage band with the Moon Elf has a bit more kick to it. Oh well - I think the archmages will spend some time on my shelf while I try out some of the more fun bands after the Christmas break.
