Since Jesse is busy with Dreamblade and I'm anxiously waiting for February to get here, I thought I'd put together a master list of who has qualified, who plans to attend the Championship and who plans to Grind it out. Please add any top 4's at an event that you are aware of (guess I should have done this as tournament reports came out) and I'll update this list. If people want to keep track of # of partipants at the Qualifers, we can do that too. Thanks!

I'll be there for the championship (Santa Clara, #2 on your list), but I have yet to decide on if I'll play in the first fwe rounds of the grinder for practice, or if I'll spend that time doing other things at the convention... IanB will also be in the championship.  The last I heard, John Wang (John05) was not planning on attending.

I forget - is the rule that you can't play in a qualifier if you qualified, or if you won a qualifier?  Is that a rule that changed?  IIRC, in the past, people played in the grinder after qualifying, but dropped...

From the web page for the limited qualifier fact sheet:

Eligibility

All players in good standing with the DCI are eligible to compete in D&D Miniatures Limited Championship Qualifier events.

From the DCI Floor Rules:

3. Player Eligibility

Anyone is eligible to participate in a DCI-sanctioned tournament except the following:

...

􀂃 Other players specifically prohibited from participation by DCI or Wizards of the Coast policy (for example, already qualified players may not participate in Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour™ Qualifier tournaments)

However, I see nothing in the DCI or DDM floor rules that prohibit qualified players from playing in the grinder.... can anyone point me to the rule?

That only applies to qualifier *winners*. Probably half the field at last year's Limited grinder were players who had already qualified by another means.

I don't believe the Last Chance Grinder is treated the same as a normal Qualifier. I'm not aware of anyone who was qualified who played in the Constructed Grinder at GenCon for the past 2 years. The first time I ever went to GenCon, I thought about playing in the Grinder for practice but was told I could not as I had already qualified so I played in another 200 constructed for practice. You'd have to check with WotC but I was under the impression that the Grinder was only open to anyone who had not yet qualified.

After qualifying in Buford, I've decided to make the trip to D&D XP to play the Limited Championship and the Community Draft. While I've been a long-time attendee of GenCon, I generally play games I don't get to play at home. Four straight days of playing DDM should be an interesting experience.

Maybe they treat the last chance qualifier for Limited differently, but I can confirm that many qualified players played in it at GenCon SoCal last year. I believe they also passed down invites if already-qualified players made the top 8, which is also not normal practice.

Looks like I'll be playing in the Grinder.Â

And that brings up a Grinder question - How many of the top players from the Grinder are qualified to play in the Limited Championship or is it only the winner of the Grinder?Â

Thanks.Â

You can take Declan off the list, as he qualified on ranking, and cannot play in the Grinder. I wouldn't be surprised to see only 20 people or so vying for those 8 spots into the Finals.

There may not be a DCI rule, but the Limited Championship Fact Sheet specifically says that if you have an invitation, you are not eligible for the Grinder/Last Chance tournament:

On Friday February 16th at D&D Experience, Wizards of the Coast will host the final chance for you to win an invitation to the Championship: the D&D Miniatures Limited Championship Series Open.

Friday, February 16th, 2007
Registration: 9:00 a.m. (Tournament start at 10:00 a.m.)

D&D Experience
Hyatt Regency Crystal City
2799 Jefferson Davis Highway
Arlington, VA 22202

Format

  • Sealed format (2 Blood War Booster Packs per player)
  • 200-point warbands
  • Warband lists are required
  • Check www.thedci.com for Limited-format rules

This tournament is open to all players who do not hold an invitation to the Championship. The top 8 finishers after the Swiss rounds will win invitations to the D&D Miniatures Limited Championship the next day.

So who do I believe about when the limited last chance is. According to the Consupport it is Thursday afternoon. According to Wizards site its Friday. Which is correct?

There seems to be a lot of uncertainity in the WotC/Consupport communications.  According to consupport, Friday is the date of the COnstrcuted qualifier - not the limited qualifier.  Further, the fact sheet also lists:

Thursday, 2 p.m.
Limited Championships - Last Chance QT
This is your very last chance to win a spot in our Limited Championship finals! Build your best warband from two Blood War Booster Packs and vie for a spot in our finals. Prizes for top eight finishers.

That seems to be in conflict with the other section posted above.  I've posted a request fro clarification on the WotC question thread in the general section...

Much confusion.Â

From ConSupport the Last Chance Limited Qualifier, ie the Grinder, is Thursday @ 2 PM:

DDM Limited Championships Last Chance QT
This is your very last chance to win a spot in our Limited Championship finals! Build your best warband from two Blood War Boosters and vie for a spot in our finals. Prizes for top eight finishers. 2PM Start. 1PM Registration.Â

AND the current Limited Invitations and Fact Sheet 2007 D&D Miniatures Championships
on WotC says:

Thursday, 2 p.m.
Limited Championships - Last Chance QT
This is your very last chance to win a spot in our Limited Championship finals! Build your best warband from two Blood War Booster Packs and vie for a spot in our finals. Prizes for top eight finishers.

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mit/20070118a

And farther down on the WotC posting it lists as Charles posted.  Oh, the confusion.Â

I hope the confusion gets cleared up soon.Â

So if you have already qualified, you will not be allowed in the Grinder.Â

IMO, folks who have already quailfied should not be able to play and knock others out of landing a spot in the top 8 for the Limited Championships.Â

For the record, it is my understanding that seats were 'handed down' during last year's limited grinder when qualified players made the top 8.  I'd imagine that the rule would be the same if the qualified players are allowed to participate. There are dozens of ways to allow qualified players to participate and enjoy the grinder without reducingt he number of new players added to the championship from the grinder...

There does seem to be some confusion. I don't know why Limited would be different than Constructed regarding the Grinder and the Constructed Grinder was only for players who had not yet qualified. Although I do understand that the Limited Grinder was different last year at SoCal, maybe it has now been corrected to match the same format as Constructed.

Then I'm cool with that.  The way I see it, the more the merrier.Â

But does anyone have any idea how that affects pairings during such a tournament?  In otherwords, yes, the top 8 seats are handed down to the top 8 non-qualified persons, but what impact might there be on the match pairings of players during the tournamnet as a result of possibly a large number of other players in the field?Â

The DCI math has befuddled me at times on how it determines pairings and such.Â
