Nutmeggers take three of the top four. Fun was had by all and I am always impressed and thankful that the Albany crew made it out again.
The Grid is pushing the pre-release to Sunday March 4th for Unhallowed.
The next CT Challenge will happen on April 7th. at the same times.
Well this is my personal report: As seen above I went with an overactivated FGFP band. I liked the synergy between urthok and snig with {achron goblin}s and when I played against this band in the NEO I knew that I liked it. (Rodger Shanklin originally played this band according to my recollection)
The band uses the firegiant as a main titan as the mainstay, urthok to get the good commander rating and to assist acheron goblins o hit and with snig within 6 (and goblin bolstere) to hit for +11 and for 15 points of magic damage. All for a 7 point piece with AC 19 an 30 HP.
All this means there can be no more than 3 groups and most likey 2 battle groups. Pippy and the fire giant, Urthok and gang, and maybe two straggler Skirmishers to get lucky and kill fodder.
The band is get in the fact that the archeron's when n melee significantly reduce their activations so that you can mob a decent piece and get away with it. So the band is overactivated for the 1st to 2nd rounds and then starts to become under activated. You therefore need to try and reduce activations.
The map choice was simple. When Rodger ran the band he used Field of ruin, but with all of the ranged bands doing so well nationally I decided that an open movement map that prevented LOS was the key. Hence Hellspike. This also allows the acherons to get into battle faster, and since I take Side B this can make an opponent take that forward start area.
Matchups:
Round 1 Vs. Don playing: {mind flayer} {Cadaver Collector} {Helmed Horror} {timber wolf} {Skeletal Legionnaire} x3
I won map and took Hellspike. Then I won side and took side B. He advanced and went stright towards the end of the smoke while I kept my minions out of reach and brought the archerons up to protect the upper victory area. In the end of the second round I had the FGFP base the mind flayer. I won init on the third round and with attaks cleaved into the mindflayer and the cadaver collector. Once I had established a inititive control (Relatively) I used my activations to beat on the CC and finished up the game. 1-0
Round 2 Vs. Justin playing: {moon elf fighter} {HEBI} {Shadowdancer}x2 {Steelheart archer}x3 fodder
Again I won map so no frostfell for me. Justin accurately summed up the match wen he said that he wins if he gets his map and loses when he has to play on hellspike. I totally agree. I got side choice as well and chose side B. The game went as follows: I move up and bring the FGFP toward the middle wall. Justin danced into the upper victorry area to kill my 2 skirmishers I had moved there (I thought at the time this was a mistake) but in hindsight even though it gave him the VA he used 2 SJ's to kill a total of 6 points. I made sure when the FGFP was by the midde wall there was no easy way o get a good flank on the FG. Consequently the FG kept hiting pieces and cleaving, and the aherons kept hitting the shadowdancers empting him to use the defensive roll. Eventually he used one, but then I kept beating down. The other shadowdancer moved to get a flank but missed his attack and with the heir in a non sneak attack position to absord damage it made it hard. The FG came back and poundd the shadowdancer forcing morale witch it failed. Justin felt he needed to move the MEF into combat and out if sight of the SD with routed off. Overall a good game andit was nice passing insight and strategy across the board during the game. I wholeheartedly believe that it would have been different on frostfell. 2-0
Round 3 Vs. Ack: See above for his warband.
I won map (Hellspike) and side again. Ack forced a gambit on the second round by setting up the red hand in the forward arae and moving sotha he could line at least half my warband. I won init and brought the FGFP up to hit the hand and force morale. Ihit and he failed moraletwice routing him off the board. Meanwhile the LGDwent into the backfield and breathed on my support. I made most of the saves and had the Acherns beat on a DC that was pinning Snig and friends(Right by the lava extension).
This match was known for me making conceal checks like a stripper gets dollar bills and Ack missing with +19 to hit a FG at
LEAST
4 times! end result 3-0
and onto the playoffs: I faced Erik and won map so onto Hellspike. Erik was playing {Aspect of Moradin} {Iron Golem} {Dragonmark heir of deneith} and fodder.
I was playing a giant and so i was worried. I prevented Erik from getting victory points with his fodder with acheron goblins, and kept a greensawn in the lower sacred circle victory area. This made Erik come to me and I kept awa from the walls mostly. I usedactivation control to limit his hits. One rule question cam up was that if the FG was in smoke and wanted to MR two away and hit the moradin (through clear squares) he could not since he was in smoke and was not adjacent to the moradin.
Unfortunatly this game went slow (I'm known as a slow player overall) and I was winning on points even though he had managed to rout my FG and got a free attack with moradin on urthok. If my FG hadn't rallied I would have been a goner. 4-0
Then I played Ack again. I think Ack summed this game up nicely on hordelings. I took the top of side for most of my figures and the LGD siting in a way that prevented me from getting the battle into the middle and then using a DC to box in the FG so he could not get to the Red hand as all it took to kill my band and have him secure a win. This time I missed conceal rolls and he did not miss attack rolls.
I have yet to be Guyf'd. But I have been f'ed.
