In my first game I was paired up against Orcdoubleax who brought the LSD band that I had faced once before. In our first meeting I won with a Storm/dual dragonkith warband. This time around I felt pretty confident because all of my hitters were immune to paralysis! He won map and side, setting up on the outpost side of Drow Outpost. I moved my rat out to the victory area and he was joined by the LSD at the end of the round. Most of my band was too slow to do anything but advance at double speed. In the second round, I moved two duergar up to base the dragon sitting on the bridge. The rat was hit with a spiritual weapon and died when it activated. Rather than use a breath weapon, my opponent made a full attack against one of my duergar but only managed to hit once. I then finished swarming the Dragon so that I had 3 champs basing it and a Maug off to the side attacking with reach without cover. They took a serious beating in the third round from the cold breath weapon but they all made the save except the Maug. Now I knew it was save to move in my commander and let all my hitters get their bonuses. Attacking at +18 they were rarely missing and chewed through the LSD and its bodyguard in record time. When he fell, I had lost one duergar and another had been morale checked but passed the save.
In the second match, I faced Bonelock who was sporting a Storm/dual Bralani build that I think is attributed to Doubt of Buddha. I won map so we played on Dragonshrine and I started from the Fire side. In the first round, I moved my warband towards the Tiamat Statue making sure to block passages that would prevent the Shadowdancer from taking out my commander without at least a little effort. He spread out quite a bit but elected to not cast flight on the Valenar. This would prove to be significant. In the second round, his Valenar did a ride by attack against the Maug and took a 25 damage AoO along the way. Now that he was wounded I knew that one more hit from a Duergar would MC him and two would kill him. I double moved the Maug to be behind cover and basing one of his Xephs. Now, he was closest for ranged attacks and would have AC 29 against them. This cleared a lane which allowed a Duergar to charge the Valenar. The attack hit and he failed morale, routing off the board. After this, he decided to play a little more aggressively because if I could swarm one or two of his hitters, it would be all over. He flanks the Maug with a Bralani but I manage to get a couple shots in with Duergar that were hanging back. He also failed morale and routed off the board. In the third round, I managed to set up a flank with a Xeph and use the Shadowdancer to rout my commander after a successful sneak attack for 25 damage. Of course, with speed 4, it would take him a while to get to the exit. Duergar then proceeded to beat on the shadowdancer who passed morale but was dead anyway after 4 hits (2 full attacks from Duergar), Things were certainly looking grim and my opponent conceded after recognizing that I could swarm around Storm and probably take her out in the next round, securing the victory.
In the third match, I faced Zak X with his own LSD. Fortunately for me, we were playing Bounty in the third round and he had a full 8 activations. So, doing some quick math in my head, I knew that I just had to kill everything except the LSD for a total of (200-122) + 70 = 148 points, which means that if I could get tile points every round I could win by the sixth round. I lost map initiative but my opponent opted to play on my map, presumably so that my hitters didn't have even higher AC in the forest. He started on the cold side and spent the first round moving only his commander and the Dragon off the start area. I knew that I would now have to make a very long trek across the board to take them all out. I advanced my troops in the usual way, keeping them slighly bunched trying to goad the dragon into a breath weapon close to my hitters. He didn't go for it and we spent the second round simply moving around. I set up a bunch of charge lanes towards the LSD sitting near the exit on the shared victory area. In the third round however, his commander took a pot shot on one of my Duergar and I seized the opportunity to double move two of my duergar to flank him. I also moved my Maug across the middle of the map to cut off the escape route for all his 3 point minis. When I won initiative in the fourth round, I hit the Cleric twice causing a morale save which he failed causing him to route off the board. Now my hitters all swarmed into his start area picking off his 3 point minis (which were actually 13 each). I caught a breath weapon for my trouble but most of the duergar passed the save. Two rounds later all of his other figs were gone and I had collected enough tile points for the win - never needing to face the LSD. We decided to play it out anyway and I managed to finish off the LSD with 3 consecutive crits for a total of 110 damage in a single phase.
It's funny - I just acquired my Hobgoblin Sergeant today and thought to myself that I would like to make a band to use with him. I figured the best way to do it would be with as many hitters as possible that want to be in base to base contact and that wouldn't mind terribly much if he went down (since he almost certainly would). Even figuring I have to make every morale save without a commander and assuming I can never rally, on average my opponent would still have to chew through at least 275 hp worth of beaters plus whatever resources they invest to take out my commander. It was a well calculated risk and it ended up paying off for me.
