The Fortress of Solitude

03/04/2007 5:43 PM
Hi All, I finally won a prerelease tournament!

My pulls were about as strong as one could reasonably ask for in a sealed event.

My warband consisted of:
Beholder Lich
Thrall of Blackrazor
Celestial Giant Owl
Cormyrian War Wizard
Fire Mephit
Changeling Rogue
Dark Talon Champion
Bat Familiar
Map: Dragondown Grotto

I pulled 2 poor commanders from my boosters (one a CMDR 1, the other a CMDR 2), and opted not to use either one.

Match 1 Opponent (Jason) won map and chose Drow Outpost. His key pieces were Ogre Executioner, Displacer Beast Manhunter, Cormyrian War Wizard. We both played defensively, and that worked to my advantage having the Beholder in the background. Towards the end, he advanced his key pieces into the shared victory area, and I was able to finish off his OE for a sound win.

Match 2 Opponent's (Shaun W) key pieces were Blessed Hunter, Vampire Dire Wolf, Large Ice Elemental, something with eldritch chain. I won my map, so this was just a matter of blocking for the Beholder and letting it go to town. In the first round, he cast invisibility on the BH so that he could advance him with impunity. In the 2nd round, my Fire Mephit's breath weapon was used to full effect against his LIE (failed its save). Because the BH was invis, the Beholder was eventually able to target the VDW and make it rout with a chill touch. There was a bit of drama in the end when his BH charged/pounced/critted Blackrazor bringing him down to 5 HP, but I was still able to pull of the win.

Match 3 Opponent (Jason P) won map so we played on the Ice Tower. His key pieces were Large Black Dragon, Shield Guardian, eldritch blaster. His one big mistake was advancing the LBD too aggressively in order to get off the breath weapon. In the subsequent round, it was mobbed and eliminated by my whole warband (except for tile grabbers), and this put me at a distinct advantage. From this point on, I just played defensively, and made sure I had tile points every round until time was called.

Match 4 Opponent's (Sean J) key pieces were Blessed Hunter, Devourer, & Pentifex Monolith. He won map, so we played on the Dragon Shrine. I was able to subdue the BH's nasty charging abilites by continually blocking with fodder pieces. Eventually, all of his key pieces routed - the Devourer failing to a chill touch.

Match 5 (Playoff Rnd 1) My opponent's (Fares) key pieces were the Ogre Executioner and Gorgon. He also had two Duergar Slavers to make them invisible! I won map. So far, he had won all of his matches by just staying invisible, collecting tile points, and trampling with his invisible Gorgon. I was able to kill his Battlerager and his Dark Talon Champion with the Beholder as they advanced through the pit, but the rest of his pieces were going to be a difficult matter. I used the Giant Owl as a sighting tool, so the Cormyrian War Wizard could get off two lightning bolts at his OE (saved both times). In the meantime, he started using the Gorgon to trample my tile-grabbers. I kept running pieces by his invisible creatures to replenish my tile points, but he wouldn't bite and take the AoO (I desperately wanted him to become visible for my Beholder). After the lightning bolts, I sent the Giant Owl after the Duergar Slavers, and was eventually able to kill both, putting me way ahead on points. In the end his OE was able to get a vicious attack off on my CWW and bring it down to 5 HP (passed morale), but time was called and I had comfortable lead in points.

Match 6 (Final) My opponent's (Joseph P) key pieces were the Devourer and the Bone Naga. We were both tired, and so was the event organizer, so we discussed whether to play the game or not. We decided to play, then rolled map init - I won. We both re-assessed the situation, and came to the conclusion that I had a solid, though not insurmountable advantage, on the Grotto. He conceded, and gave me a default win. We both went to a mutual friend's birthday party after and had lotsa pizza, ice cream, and D&D RPG 'til well past midnight.

A day well spent.

Nice report Thenameless.Â

And pretty decent pull.Â

Congrats on the winning.Â

And finally, you can't beat going to a B-day party after a DDM pre-release event (and winning the event) with friends for pizza and D&D RPG.  Wow, that was one grand day!Â

Cheers.Â

Thanks guys. It's definitely one of those days you'll remember (and tend to appreciate more when you have to try to fit everything in with family life and work). It was a big relief to pull the Beholder Lich in my first booster, and then a bit of an adrenaline surge to see Blackrazor in my second. I've only been playing in limited events since Angelfire, and I've always been saddled with less than optimal pulls (a euphemism). When the best player from our area discovered my pulls last Saturday, he said "Okay, now you better win, Joe." I like pressure, so it didn't get to me too much, but as the rounds went on I became more and more nervous about having to face the invisible Gorgon/Ogre Executioner warband. Oh well, sometimes the dice just go your way I guess.

Joe,

That is a sealed event feather to add to your cap, nice job.

certainly looks like a great pull...how does the lich look like, we didn't see any down here in chicago.

I ended up sixth or seventh, not too shabby (for me anyway).
