The last pre-Unhallowed constructed tournament for the Gelatinous Dudes was tonight and despite the frenzy of minis activity all week, we had a decent showing of 6 despite a number of regulars not showing up. We expect our numbers to grow starting next week since there were many new players introduced to the game at the pre-release last weekend. It was a typical tournament for us in that very few of the warbands were "typical". Here's what happened:

The bands:

Tem (3-0)

Helmed Horror x2
Maug x2
Dark Moon Monk
Kobold Monk
Timber Wolf
Kobold Miner
Map: Dungeon of Blood

Orcdoubleax (2-1)

Lich Necromancer
Ettin Skirmisher
Orc Champion
Orc Wizard
Orc Wardrummer
Small Fire Elemental
Orc Warrior x2
Map: Hellspike

Banana Samurai (2-1)

Cleric of Gruumsh
Orc Sergeant
Rask, Half-Orc Chainfighter
Orc Champion
Orc Wizard
Orc Wardrummer
Mountain Orc
Orc Berserker
Map: Caves of Chaos

Zak X (1-2)

Bladesinger
Copper Samurai
Dromite Wilder
Goliath Cleric of Kavaki
Goliath Barbarian
Hero of Valhalla x2
Mialee, Elf Wizard
Map: Teleport Temple

Bonelock (1-2)

Tiefling Captain
Marilith
Large Fang Dragon
Blood Ghost Berserker
Orc Wardrummer
Hunting Hyena
Orc Warrior
Map: Hellspike

Moose (0-3)

Drow Arachnomancer
Scorpion Clan Drow Fighter
Large Deep Dragon
Xen'drik Champion
Lolth's Sting x3
Twig Blight
Map: Mushroom Cavern

Round 1:
Orcdoubleax def. Zak X
Tem def. Bonelock
Banana Samurai def. Moose

Round 2:
Orcdoubleax def. Banana Samurai
Tem def. Zak X
Bonelock def. Moose

Round 3:
Tem def. Orcdoubleax
Banana Samurai def. Bonelock
Zak X def. Moose

In the first match, I play against Terry who has what looks like the scariest band. Since I am running without a commander, I lose both map and side initiative so we play on Hellspike. My worst fear in this match is that the Marilith bases me at the end of a round and after he wins initiative, unloads a boatload of damage. In the first round, only I get tile points from my miner and I advance most of my figs towards the centre of the map towards the bottom. At the beginning of the second round, I attempt to stun the BGB with my kobold monk, but he passes the save. He uses the BGB to take out the monk and I proceed to hit him with both HH dropping him to 30. His Marilith and Fang Dragon move towards the top of the map to square off against my other Maug. Instead of sticking around for that fight, I retreat with that Maug to take out his Hyena that had run by to grab tile poitns. After losing initiative in the third round, he activated the BGB but missed my Maug with the attack. He also double moved his dragon to join in the fray. I finished off the BGB and started to put some damage into the dragon with the Maug and a HH. His Marilith double moved to base the maug, flanking with the fang dragon. This left an openning for my other maug to double move to base his tiefling. Unfortunately, when he decided to run away, I missed on the AoO. In the next round, He dropped the Maug but my HHs managed to hit with all of their attacks against the Fang Dragon. I also moved the Maug to base the Tiefling again and this time managed to land a blow, but he passed morale. I won the very important initiative in the 4th round and finished off the Fang Dragon with the HHs and managed to move the one that was too close to the Marilith away so that she couldn't get off her full attack. She decided to move back 2 instead and take a full attack against a Maug with cover. Only 2 shots landed and the Maug finished off the Tiefling, moving away to finish the round. In the fifth round, I used a HH to base his Wardrummer, planning on taking him down and spreading out the rest of my forces to gain tile points until I went over 200. There was no way to prevent this, so the game was conceded.

In my second match, I faced Zak's rather odd CG band on TT, starting from the A side. In the first round, I moved out to grab teleporters as did he, a quick cast MM from the bladesinger took out my miner standing on one of his victory areas. In the second round, he hit my kobold monk standing on a teleporter and caused him to rout. This made his Hero's fearless, though with only 20 hp each, they still went down to one hit from any of my beaters. He made some aggressive first moves, using the Dromite's cold ray to take out my wolf and a charge from a Hero to deal 25 damage to my DMM though she happily passed the resulting morale save. I retaliated in kind, taking out those pieces. Towards the end of the match, most of the pieces ended up in a jumble near the centre of the map. One of my Maugs went down to attacks from the Goliath Barbarian, but 4 consecutive attacks from the Helmed Horrors took him down in kind. With only his Warsinger left, he took a single attack at my Maug and ran away to a distant teleporter. I devoted one HH to grab tile points while my other HH and Maug went to chase him down. One way or another, I was going to hit 200 in the next couple rounds so the game was conceded.

My last match of the night was against Orcdoubleax's Lich Necromancer band. Despite losing map initiative, he chose my map rather than use Hellspike. Against constructs, many of his abilities were nullified and it was going to be an uphill battle for him. I at first contemplated trying to take out all of his fodder pieces since we were playing in bounty, but when both the Ettin and Orc Champion charged to the middle of the map, I figured that if I could bring all four of my hitters to bear, they should both drop fairly quickly. In the first round, I should note that my brave kobold miner attacked and hit his small fire elemental which routed off the board. Of course, the Miner took 5 fire damage in return and died. At the end of the first round, he had based my most forward Maug with his orc champion and had hit that same maug with an empowered magic missle which passed my spell resistance. In the second round, he won initiative and hit twice with the orc champion but then failed spell resistance on another MM which would have taken him down. With only 10 hp left, I retaliated against the orc dropping him to 40 hp but he passed his morale save. In another attempt to take down my severely wounded Maug, He advanced with the Ettin and an Orc Warrior. They both failed to deal the killing blow and the rest of my beaters moved to base the enemy and hit in turn. I won the third round initiative and with full attacks from both Maugs, took down his Orc Champ and Ettin. At this point the game was conceded since he just didn't have the damage output available to really threaten my band.

All in all, a good night with a number of suprising warbands seeing play. I have noticed for the past while that I always tend to do better in tournaments where I let someone else choose my band for me. This time around, since he wasn't playing, Zuran selected this band for me to play out of the 4-5 that I had brought with me.

Only 16 more hours until our Unhallowed cases arrive...

A Proud Gelatinous Dude
