The first sanctioned event ever at Odyssey-2000 was this past Saturday and I’m happy to say it was quite a success. With 11 players showing up, we played 3 rounds and I had the opportunity to meet and play against some new players to the game. I decided to finally break out some of my Xendriks to play:

Cleric of Sune
Frenzied Berserker
Gnome Trickster
Xen’drik Champion x3
Wild Elf Warsinger
Bat Familiar
Xeph Warrior
Map: Dragonshrine

Match 1: Tom M.

Red Hand War Sorcerer
Beholder Lich
Blood Golem of Hextor
Spellstitched Hobgoblin Zombie x2
Archeron Goblin x2
Bat Familiar x2
Map: Broken Demongate

Tom is relatively new to the game, but came to this tournament with his son and they’re both learning the ropes quickly. He has a scary looking band, but with my invisibility, I was hoping to weave my way to the Beholder and take it out quickly. He won map and side, opting to play from the good side of Broken Demongate. I started by casting legion’s magic weapon and making everyone invisible. We spent the first two rounds positioning. I was advancing through the gate while he was retreating towards his own exit while trying to get into a position with the blood golem up front. After making a rather bold double move, my FB was basing the Beholder. In the third round, I opted to go first and moved a xendrik into a flanking position and attacked twice with the FB hoping to drop the beholder. Unfortunately, even with all my bonuses, I missed on attack and he retaliated with a couple eye rays and swarmed my FB with his goblins. In the fourth round, I won initiative and took out the beholder, again needing both swings from the FB to do so. A lightning bolt took out my FB and my deathstrike took out a nearby goblin. By this point, time was almost up and I was well ahead on points. I swarmed the blood golem and would have probably taken it down in the next round if there had been one. Result: win.

Match 2: Tinker Bellhammer

Free League Ranger
Warbound Impaler
Wemic Barbarian
Marid
Vampire Hunter
Xeph Warrior
Map: Teleport Temple

This is the first and only female DDM player I’ve ever met. Perhaps it’s just me, but they certainly seem rarer than female RPGers. She is brand new to the game but is very serious about learning the game and was happy to take advice from the many seasoned players at the tournament. She won map initiative so we ended up playing on Teleport Temple. The first round, we both started taking teleporters but some of her slower pieces couldn’t quite get to them since she had started from side B. In the second round, she made a mistake of leaving the Marid adjacent to a vacant teleporter after her move – something I’m sure she’ll never do again. I teleported in Sune followed by the FB who unloaded two 35 damage hits to drop the Marid even after it passed the morale save. Her commander and Vampire Hunter followed shortly there after thanks to the fact that I could get skirmish attacks off with Xendriks fairly easily on this map. As the game was winding down, she managed to paralyze my FB with the warbound impaler but not before I charged in with multiple Xendriks to put a serious hurt on it. After winning the next initiative the plant went down. The wemic could really do nothing but face the same fate in the following round. Resut: win.

Match 3: Geoff

Tiefling Captain
Werewolf Lord
Large Black Dragon
Thrall of Blackrazor
Orc Wardrummer
Timber Wolf
Orc Warrior
Map: Hellspike

Geoff has been learning this game in leaps and bounds and I was quite happy to see him (though not his warband!) in the finals today. He won map initiative so we played on Hellspike. On the first turn, we both advanced towards the centre of the map – and I double moved my FB to base his WWL while still invisible. It was quite a risk, but if I had won initiative, I could take it down before any retaliation. Unfortunately, I lost initiative and he attacked and hit twice with the WWL. He followed that up with a move and attack by the Thrall which also passed conceal. Finally, he used haste to make another attack with the Thrall which thankfully missed due to conceal and I was left with 15hp. I quickly followed up with my bat to deliver a 20 point heal. After moving Sune into position, I ended the round by attacking the WWL with a number of Xendriks and finishing him off with a pair of attacks by the FB. My third Xendrik moved up to hit his Thrall for 20 damage. In the third round, he moved his dragon into my backfield and breathed to take hit many of my support pieces. Thankfully, everything passed the save and resulting morale saves as well. I hit his Thrall for another 20 from my Xendrik dropping him to 25hp. When he attacked with the Thrall, he targeted the FB. He hit with both attacks dropping the FB, but her deathstrike also landed taking him out as well. There was a short debate about whether or not the Thrall should get it’s +20 hp for killing the FB, but the FAQ states that the deathstrike is resolved before the FB is destroyed, so both creatures impaled themselves on each other’s swords. With his two most dangerous hitters gone, I only had to worry about the dragon. Thankfully, my armour class was high enough on most pieces that I wasn’t too worried. He flew in towards my wounded Xendrik and gnome to try and take them out. Meanwhile, my other pair of Xendriks had done away with his Tiefling and Orc Warrior. I boldly moved Sune up into a flanking position on the dragon and cast castigate for 5 damage. This was followed up by the Gnome attacking twice and hitting with both attacks for 40 damage causing a morale save which he passed. After winning the following morale save, the gnome hit once more and a Xendrik finally pulled of a powerful charge to deal the last 30 damage and drop the dragon. Result: win.

Since we had so many players, there were actually 2 of us who finished 3-0. Zuran Alda had also won every one of his matches using another warband I had brought with me (he had forgotten the cards for his own warband):

Ultroloth
Chraal
Duergar Champion x2
Canoloth
Greenspawn Sneak
Dire Rat
Goblin Skirmisher
Map: Caves of Chaos

I believe that I would have had the advantage in this match if we had played another round since my invisible creatures should have no trouble getting to the Ultroloth to take him out and take the Chrall with him. But time was short and we instead decided to split the first and second prizes between us which included some of the material from the March retailer kits (greenspawn sneak repaints, campaign book, etc). A fun day and hopefully the first of many.

Good write up temsry. Your hands must be cramping from writing what four or five reports in a week . Nice to be welcoming so many new players to our "outlier" *snickers* region.
