My first match-up of the night was against Tomcat who was playing another variation of Storm + Cormyrean War Wizards. It's amazing how much damage they can dish out in short order. I won my map so we played on Mushroom Cavern. In the first round, we both advanced units collecting tile points. I purposely left the Firegiant in a position where he would be hard pressed to drop lines on him. I also made him immune to cold since three cold rays with phalanx casting would be 150 points of damage. He ended up casting a couple lightning bolts and silver fire in the second round putting some damage into the fire giant and the bodyguard. I took an AoO from Storm to double move the giant into a spot where he was basing two of the CWWs as well. In the next round, I rolled a 1 with the FGFP with an attack that would have taken out Storm. After getting slid out of contact, I moved the bodyguard to base the wizards again. After weathering the damage the next round, I was finally able to take out Storm and cleave into one of the war wizards. After that it was all downhill since the Ultroloth could drop a CWW to 30 hp so the FGFP could hit and cleave. They dropped fast and the game was over in another round or two.
I was paired down for the second round and was matched up against Orcdoubleax. I was lucky to win my map again so in the first turn I made the fire giant immune to sonic. By positioning a skirmisher carefully he couldn't get all the way to my start area even with 20 movement. I advance all my troops and get tile points in the first round. Second round, I again won initiative and moved up to hit the Steel Predator with the Fire Giant for 25 damage. I then moved the Ultroloth up to enfeeble the Dragon. He took the AoO with the Steel Predator and passed the morale save to move 10 the long way around and used his sonic cone to catch the Ultroloth but I passed the save. His dragon based the Ultroloth and missed his single attack. I then moved all my little guys up to attack the Dragon. The Dragonmark hit for 25 and one goblin hit for 10. I won initiative in the next round and finished off the dragon with a number of attacks from the Dragonmark and the Fire Giant before he got a chance to make another attack. The Steel Predator then moved up to attack the Ultroloth and hit for 20 but I passed my morale save. In the final round I finished off the Steel Predator with attacks from the Ultroloth and the Firegiant. He conceded the game after his only hitters were down.
My last match-up of the night was against Nuit Eternelle who is a relatively new player but is getting better in leaps and bounds. He was the only other person to be undefeated at this point. Since we were playing bounty, I knew I could stay ahead if I could take out enough of his fodder. The only problem would be that they'd be invisible. I won map and side again and we both moved fairly cautiously with him moving most of his force towards my pair of victory areas where my greenspawn was parked. Before he went invisible though, my Greenspawn managed to take out one of his bats with a ranged attack. After that, I think he was hoping to get tile points every round to stay ahead of me after killing some of my fodder with ranged attacks. I put the Fire Giant into the chokepoint at the top of the map so that he would be closest for all the ranged attacks and he'd have 27 AC. I used the Ultroloth and a skirmisher to help "guard" his other victory area. After two rounds the score was 51 to 49 for him, since I had killed a bat and a xeph but he had killed my kobold monk and the greenspawn. After that, he tried running creatures near my Ultroloth hoping invisibility would protect them. I did roll lots of low numbers, but eventually they fell and I took the lead. Once I had passed 100 points, he started to move up and bring the fight to me. I then used the Ultroloth's Dark Suggestion to make the invisible Regdar attack the LCS. After that, he was visible so a quick-cast scorching ray caused a morale check which he failed. After a failed rally check he was off the board and I moved up to 174 points (Xeph x2, Bat x2, Wild Elf, Regdar = 104 points + 7 rounds tiles) while he was still around the 100 point mark since I was keeping the rest of my goblin skirmishers well protected. Tordek finally decided to base my giant and I attacked him with everything I had, connecting with only one attack since he was still invisible. In the following round, he took out the dragonmark and cleaved into the giant, dropping him to 115 since he was immune to the electricity and fire damage. I retailated with two more hits of my own, dropping Tordek to 10. At the same time, I put 15 damage into the LCS with the Ultroloth and based him. In the next round I finished off the LCS with the Ultroloth which put me over 200. |
