My first matchup of the night was against Zak X and his invisible Storm Giant band. On the first round, I managed to get a couple eye-rays off on one of his commanders, but it was only minor damage. After that he went invisible. We jockied for tile points and managed to match each other in every round. I tried to get a point lead by using my own bats as lightning rods to kill his bats. Unfortunately, a combination of anti-magic eyes and good rolls on his part left me with no lightning bolts left and two dead bats while he had only lost one bat and a Xeph Warrior. I was now at a 3 point disadvantage and I couldn't kill any of his creatures which simply remained invisible and gathered tile points until time expired.
After that, I was given the bye in the second round so I had a chance to scope out the rest of the competition. Ironic how there were at least 3 warbands featuring Beholders and an equal number featuring invisibility.
My third matchup was against Tomcat with his invisible warband. This time, my lightning bolt strategy worked and I managed to take out all three of his bats before he could deliver any nasty shocks. After that, he began casting spells and eventually managed to take out both of my nagas which were somewhat overextended to get their lightning bolts off. Of course, this made him visible and the barage of eye-rays began. Kord was first cursed then failed a fear ray save, running all the way back to his start area. Even though he eventually rallied, this effectively took him out of the combat. In short order, two elf warmages dropped from damage along with a gnome trickster thanks to a finger of death. All the while, he failed about 3-4 antimagic eye rolls in a row. Time was about to be called and he conceded since he didn't have an effective way eliminate any of my remaining creatures.
If anything, this night has simply reinforced how much I dislike Epic format. It is quickly becoming a battle of who can buff the most and there seems to be much less variety in successful bands than there is in constructed play. At least these only come around once a month. I can't wait to try out the new maps next week.
