| The Thursday Knights have gathered again to duke it out on the battlefield. Our donation box is almost full again so it looks like we'll be making another trip to drop it off soon. I decided to play triple blacks because I haven't had a chance to do so yet - it feels like it's been quite a while since I've had a chance to play a constructed event. I have lots of ideas I want to try out. Anyway - here's what happened:
The bands:
Temysry (3-0)
Werewolf Lord Large Black Dragon x3 Timber Wolf Hyena Orc Warrior x2 Map: Hellspike
Tomcat (2-1)
Harmonium Guard Cormyrean War Wizard x5 Bat Familiar x3 Aasimar Fighter x2 Map: Field of Ruin
Rubberman (2-1)
Dwarven Defender Tordek, Dwarf Champion Shield Guardian Dwarf Artificer Eberk, Adventurer Timber Wolf Man-At-Arms Map: Mushroom Cavern
Zak X (1-2)
Cadaver Collector Blood Golem of Hextor Helmed Horror Map: Mithril Mines
Pumpkin King (1-2)
Cleric of Syreth Kolyarut Pentifex Monolith x2 Sacred Watcher x2 Timber Wolf Commoner Map: Thieves Quarter
Moose (0-3)
Lyrandar Skyfire Captain Warforged Barbarian Mephling Pyromancer Wand Expert Halfling Slinger Changling Rogue Elf Warrior Map: Magma Keep
Round 1: Temysry def. Zak X Tomcat def. Moose Rubberman def. Pumpkin King
Round 2: Temysry def. Rubberman Tomcat def. Pumpkin King Zak X def. Moose
Round 3: Temysry def. Tomcat Rubberman def. Zak X Pumpkin King def. Moose
My first matchup of the night was against Zak's triple construct band. Although it looks a little intimidating, I knew the slow speed and 3 activations would hurt him. He won map and chose Mithril Mines. He also won first turn initiative and moved his helmed horror and cadaver collector to block both victory areas from my timber wolf. Instead, I double-moved two dragons to flank the HH and get tile points anyway. I advanced the rest of my troops and used my fodder to block off the hallways so his large bases couldn't come to the HH's rescue. In the next round, I put a beating on his HH but it survived. He won initiative in the third round and got a couple more attacks off with the HH before it finally fell. I dropped two lines on his other two constructs as the CC kept killing my fodder. He eventually based the WWL with his CC, but I managed to swarm it with all the dragons and take it down in short order.
My second match of the night was against Rubberman's high-AC dwarf band. The shield guardian/dwarven defender combo would be tough to take down unless I could get some of them to fail some saves. He won his map so we played on Mushroom Cavern. I started on the right side of the map and we both advanced towards the centre and got tile points in the first round. In the second round, Tordek couldn't get to anyone in a single move and attack so eventually he just moved up to base my WWL. I took out his TW to gain fearlessness and started to drop some lines on his commander, SG and the support dwarves. After flanking Tordek with another dragon I managed to put some damage into him. He won initiative in the next round and put 50 damage into the WWL. My attacks drop Tordek and I start getting full attacks on the SG which also drops quickly since it was damaged by all 3 lines. After that, he conceded the game since he just didn't have the damage output left to kill more than one dragon before I'll be able to win on points.
The final was against Tomcat who has decided to go all-out with 5 cormyrean war wizards, a harmonium guard and activations. It was going to be a lot of autodamage flying around. Luckily, I won map for the first time of the night so we played on Hellspike. He won choice of side so I started on the left. We both moved out rather aggressively with neither of us getting tile points. I made sure to keep everyone hidden from sight, but I knew he would use bats to target his lightning bolts if needed. I ended up winning initiative in the second round so I used a breath weapon on two wizards and a bat. One wizard (and the bat) failed the save and I moved up the WWL to finish him off (remaining in the smoke) to gain fearlessness. He responded by sliding one of my dragons that was basing two of his wizards and followed up with a lightning bolt. It hit two dragons but they both made the save. I then activated both of the other dragons, dropping another two lines. One caught three wizards and the other caught the same three wizards along with both Aasimar. After everything was done, there were only two wizards still standing and one of them had 25hp and based by a dragon. When he eventually tried to move away, I hit with the attack and he failed the resulting morale save. We rolled the next initiative and when I won, he conceded the game.
I knew the large black dragons were a force to be reckoned with, but they were even more powerful than I had first thought. Even though I wasn't playing against top warbands you would probably see at a qualifier, I was still very suprised that through all three games, I never lost anything but fodder.
