Top 5 after Swiss:

1) Pat Lynch (patlynch) - Storm, x4 Shadowdancers, Wild Elf Warsinger, Greycloak and Wolf, Bat Familiar (5-1) MAP - Dragonshrine
2) Matthew Noble (Sirohk) - Ultraloth, FGFP, Dragonmark (5-1) MAP - Market Square
3) John Ling (lingster) - x4 Large Black Dragon, Tiefling Cpt, Orc Warrior (4-2) MAP - Thieves Quarter
4) Jamie (ack) - Werewolf Lord, x3 Large Black Dragon, Orc Warrior, Hyena (4-2) MAP - Hellspike
5) jerimiah (can't remember his screenname) - Storm, x2 Virtuous Chargers, CWW, Greycloak, fodder (4-2) MAP - ?

I dropped after swiss as I already qualified in PA so that someone else could get in.

Final / Top 4:

1) Jamie (ack) (by drop)
2) Pat Lynch (patlynch)
3) and 4) John Ling (lingster) and Jerimiah

It was a fun day and a big CONGRATS to the Top 4.

I was 5-0 going my fianl match versus Pat Lynch and I knew I neede to win map initiaitve.  I didn't and that was pretty much game at that point.  I tried, but Pat 'Jumped" his Shadowdancers around all over the place picking me off 1 mini at a time, gaining points, and chewing up the clock in the process.  Oh well, rock, paper, scissors.

I'll post more later when I have time.

I will have to give a full report later, but the highlights of the day were the fact that the CORDON ability of the TQ map came up. I had the win with a CORDON. BUT I Choose to ignore the cordon (after 3 rounds) and go for the kill. I was up on points, but felt honorable enough to jump off and kill the remaining peice that I needed to go over points.

The second Highlight of the day, was my match against Pat Lynch. I was the only person he lost to. More on this later, once I get my notebook of matches.

May you find peace and happiness at the hand of Hextor.

Rochester DDM Qualifier, May 12, 2007
Holy Crap. I won…
Back in Mid-March, we started planning on attending multiple qualifiers. Thru a series of events, I was only able to make Rochester and Milford, MA – and Pat and I talked about surprising the folks in Rochester by just showing up unannounced. Other folks from New England talked about joining us, but in the end it was just me and the 2 Lynchs. We drove up Friday nite and stayed at the worst Motel 6 ever. Cigarette burns covering the bedding, no roll away as requested, no cable to the TV (so that didn’t work at all). It was basically awful. Oh, and Im really glad we weren’t sleeping in – because about 9am they were doing roofing work. Motel 6 at the airport in Rochester if you wish to join the boycott.

We arrived at the store, hellos were said, final band choices were made and signups were completed. In my case, I had some options on which version of the band I was going to play. I had brought the pieces for just about every option on this band but we talked on the ride up and I agreed that the Werewolf Lord with 3 Large Blacks was probably the strongest. My last minute decision was whether I was going to run TWolf, Hyena, 2x OW or Hunting Hyena, Hyena, Gnoll, Orc Warrior. It gave me an option at a 3rd 10 damage attack.. but it was so situational that I went with the traditional band.

How did I decide on playing this core? Because smart people already won with this band. In a CG heavy meta, CE should win. The band was also fairly straight forward and I had been playing it for a while. But it wasn’t “my” band – I had fallen in love with UltroPriest and had played it very successfully at local events for the last few tourneys. But in the end, the “autolose” with Dragondown Grotto, Ballista Bands and now Theives Quarter… I figured it was too “bad” to see play with all those horrible match ups. Er.. man, was I wrong.

So, Ive got my dragons, Ive got my map (Hellspike, again because smart people tested more than I did – thanks Guy) and Ive got my dice. Im ready to roll.

Match 1 – name forgotten but he was a great guy – Ballista, Couatl, Cleric of Order, Warweaver, etc. I won Map (hellspike), and deferred side. I started getting tile points and then hung back to draw him out somewhat. Then I pounced and dismantled his band in short order.

Match 2 – name forgotten (man, I need to take notes like I used to). Strahd, Spectre, Sacred Watchers on Teleport Temple. It was a low activation band, but WHOA can that Spectre hit like a truck with the Torch and then bloodstar. +20 for 30… um. Ow. I made some key incorporeal checks and won the match by elimination. Actually, ALL of my matches went to elimination. None of them ended on time.

Match 3 – this name I remember, Pat Lynch. Yep, Pat and I are matched up. Pat is playing SilverDancers at 9 activations on Dragon Shrine and I defeated myself before Pat even had a chance. I played so poorly, too aggressively and just threw myself upon the teeth of the beast. Pat is an excellent player, but I have beaten him. And I probably had at least a 50 / 50 shot yesterday. But I charged forward and threw the game away because I had beaten myself. Don’t do that! The old adage of Any Given Sunday is true, any band can beat any other band in the right set of circumstances.. (and we will see one of those sequences in the next match). I lost and am now 2-1. I know I need to win out or maybe lose one more. But winning out will be much safer.

Match 4 – Declan Lynch. DAMMIT! Back to Back Lynch matches and I know that one of us will be on a rougher road to the top 4. Another Dammit – he is playing the Ryld variant of this same band. So it will be 80% dice and 20% skill. He wins map, side and I think every round of init (the +6 init advantage might have had something to do with that). Forest Cliff Lair, setup on the cave side. Im okay with that.. gives me the blood rock. I move my WWL too far forward and take a couple of acid lines. This starts being bad. Declan makes a mistake and moves his third dragon up to breathe on the Lord again, but had positioned him so that one of my dragons was his closest enemy. No third line. I think this rattled him a bit and he just ploughed forward into what turned out to be a massive chain of flanks. My WWL is down to 5 hit points (thanks to no 2nd line and DR) and Im standing on bloodrock. 20 - 50 damage. 19 – 50 damage, killing a dragon and generating a cleave. 20 – 50 damage on the cleave. Um. Whoa. 150 points of damage in a single activation. That might have shifted the game just a little bit in my favor. The rest of the match fell to my side and Im now 3-1.

Match 5 – Paired up vs Sirohk. Running UltroPriest. WHAT??!! Didn’t anyone tell him that you cant run UltroPriest anymore? He is running it on Market Square. I have done this match and its just straight up not good for me. I managed to get first turn tile points and wiped out his band nearly in ascending point value. Fodder got cleared. Dragonmark (the recipient of a pair of lines) went down next. The WWL was used as bait (yes, silly I know) to pull the Ultropriest away from the rest of the band, allowing me to take out the Ultroloth. Then it was the dice off. I checked the out of command Forgepriest, but he made the save and ended up winning. 3-2 and in a MUST WIN situation next round.

Match 6 – I get paired up again and a lot of the other matches are going crazy. Its looking very much like all the 4-2s will be in the top 4 as Sirokh is going to be dropping before the cut since he’s already qualified. Jeremiah is my last match – playing Storm, 2x VCs, CWW on Kings Road. I dispersed my forces in an effort to allow me to respond anywhere to his attacks and he was kind of clumped into the woods near the central victory area. Blast a line hitting 4 and then my 2nd line hits 5 models – killing the CWW outright. Things fall in my favor and we both end up 4-2.

The final standings before the cut were
LynchPT (5-1)
Sirohk (5-1)
Lingster (4-2) (having beaten Pat)
Ack (4-2) (losing only to the 5-1s)

PHEW! Holy crap, I actually qualified for nationals. Sirohk drops and that gets Jeremiah in. Pat plays him and I play Lingster in the first round.
Lingster is playing the Tiefling / 4x Large Blacks. We play on my map and I start getting tile points round 1. Lingster sits back near his start area and I encircle him outside his range and in the smoke. He is worried about the Lord, I want to kill the tiefling and he REALLY doesn’t want me to do that. But it comes down to me getting tiles and him not – forcing him to make a move. He extends himself out, allowing me to start with the killing. Again we setup a nice chain of flanks and again it falls in my favor. It was a straight up dice off that I came out on top. Well played Lingster. 5-2 and will eventually play for first place.

Pat wins his match and we go off to discuss a prize split. We come to an agreement and he drops before round 8 – giving me the win. Im still blinking in utter shock that Ive qualified.. AND come in first.

My thanks are deep. I thank Pat and Declan for being my company as I drove up and back. Their advice helped me play a little bit tighter and get into the top 2.
Thanks to JayMOTU for judging. Its always awesome to have a judge who actively plays the game and is aware of a lot of the craziness with some of the rules.
Thanks to Millenium Games – they have a huge store that has an active group of players.
Thanks to my opponents – everyone was a good sport and I know I had a great time.
Thanks to my dice for not going totally cold when I needed them to be mediocre.

OMG! Im going to Indy!

Congrats Ack.  And congrats to all else who qualified.

Hopefully it'll rain like there's no tomorrow on the day of the MA qualifier and I'll see you there.

My first match was against Ross (ronin). He ran an Ultrofiend band.

Ultroloth
Pit Fiend
Snig + snigets
2 Greenspawn sneaks.

He won map choice and we played on Kings Road. I was able to swarm him and drop the ultroloth down. The mistakes made here was that the Pitfiend was not in the woods, and the ultroloth was not casting his spells. Another thing forgotten was the Fiend's aura of fear.

I WIN, losing three dragons in the process.

Second Match was against Mark and his dwarves.

Tordek
Thundertusk
Artificer
Eberk
2 Hill Dwarves
Warforged scout

I won map choice, and we played on Thieves Quarter. Losing the first couple inits, he was able to bump up the dwarves to thier very high AC. The fodder dwarves went fast due to a couple of lines of acid. However, the Thundertusk and Tordek were largely ignored. I was up on points and cordoned for the win. I only sat in the cordon for about 3-4 rounds, just gathering points. I did not want to end the game on that note, so I told him I was coming out. Tordek stood in the middle of a roof and I surrounded him, hitting twice to take him to morale. He routed (no commander left), and I critted him from behind. He then bolted off the roof, killing himself in the process. My WIN.

Third Match. Pat Lynch.

Shadowdancers x4
Storm
Filler.

This was the match I was hoping for, yet dreading at the same time. I knew that I could take out the dancers easy enough, but with Pat playing them, I was worried. Simply because he's ranked #2 in the world. I'm ranked #475 or something high like that. I won map and took TQ again, knowing my chances were now much better. Needless to say, first round points went to Pat because he was able to assassinate the Tiefling. My hopes were failing fast. BUT, he made a couple of slight mistakes in that he put his dancers ont he roof where I could block them off and line them. He failed several line saves. Storm was trapped on the roof near an edge and two dragons. I was able to win by having two dragons left. I could have flown away, playing keep-away, but I decided that taking out the trapped dancers was much more important. Secretly I was jumping up and down with joy. #2 in the nation's only loss that day was to me. WIN for me.

Fourth match, Matt Noble, ultroforge.

I knew this was coming, and knew it was going to be bad. I was hoping to get my map, but lost and played on Market Square. I was able to remove the Ultroloth, but the firegiant was cracking dragon heads the whole time. His win, my LOSS.

Fith Match, Jeremiah. Stormchargers

Storm
2 V. chargers
Warwizard
Aramil
Greycloak + wolf
Bat

This watch, I won map choice. Jeremiah was hating the match up because he'd faced this band before in pratice and it destroyed his band. This time the dice were against me once we moved into combat. My Dragons routed every time. It was not a great match for me. LOSS for me.

Sixth match Dan (xenozepher) Quad Wizards

Storm
4 Warwizards
Greycloak + wolf
Bat
2 Xefs

I win map choice and it was all downhill from there for Dan. With my fast movement I was able to base and lock down the wizards in the alleys and line them to death. He did take out a dragon and my orc. My WIN.

SEMI-FINALS - Jamie and his tri-blacks

3 Blacks
Werewolf Lord
Hyena
Wolf
Orc x2

This was a game of dice. Whose dice rolled better. Since the majority of our pieces were immune to the other band, it was simply who hit first, and who hit the hardest. I let him come to me, which was a bad choice. I should have just flown out and taken him on full force. but instead I tried to protect the tiefling instead of just letting him be eaten. LOSS for me, but I still placed 3rd, so I've got my ticket into the Championship.

May you find peace and happiness at the hand of Hextor.
